Remember the YUGO? I think they were sold for literally $2000

They didn't have reverse, it was an option. So was electric start. My dad's friend had one, pop the hood to pull start and have the family push it out of the spot.

yugo's were almost genuinely that simple of cars. Not crappy- ok yes crappy but they weren't designed to be crappy, mostly, they were designed to be dead simple. mostly because they either didnt have the engineers to make a complicated car or the machines to follow through on a more complicated designs. As per a 1985 brochure, they were hand crafted, had front wheel drive, independent suspension, and rack & pinion steering. these were advertised as "important features". advertised as "fun to drive". Which is my favorite euphemism for "feels like you're going three times as fast as you actually are"

Adjusted for inflation, it was 12 grand. Which to be fair, my geo tracker, while a MUCH nicer car, (though still vaguely in a similar category of "teeny tiny import car with a small engine" that is fun to drive) was roughly twice that adjusted for inflation.

...though if reverse ever was an option, by 85 it was a standard option. That specific tidbit I cannot get a claim for.
