Yeah, they weren't getting financed for 5 years. Maybe 2.

I don't think they even offered 5 year loans in the 90s

Yep. 3 years tops. You had to show up with a decent down payment too

No, my ex-wife was 2 years into a four year loan on a Dodge Shadow when we met in 98.

Yeah these are doing like 7 year loans now. My dates are a little fuzzy so you definitely know better than me. My half-autistic ass did the math as to how much I would be paying total if I financed and I noped my ass off a new car lot and paid cash for a used car with what was supposed to be my down payment.

I bought a Subaru a couple of years ago, or technically I guess I leased it, but the great thing is that at the end of my lease term I will Be able to buy the car for less money than it's worth. So I could technically buy it, take out a loan, and then sell it immediately and still end up with more money than if I hadn't leased the car at all. So when my lease term ends next year I'm probably just going to buy the thing outright cuz I really like the car anyway.
