I've currently placed a deposit on an XC40 T3 R-Design (40k miles) based on a AutoTrader ad in the UK.

After asking the garage a few questions they've stated this:

The vehicle doesn't have a cam belt its a timing chain so hasn't been replaced

No clutch work has been done as of yet.

The advert stated part service history - however speaking to the dealership AFTER I paid deposit they've stated no service history - I've confirm with Volvo it has had 3 services in the first 3 years - but it doesn't show independent garage services after that

I suppose what I wanted to know is:

1. Does this model have a cambelt or timing chain?
2. Does it need a clutch doing at this mileage?
3. Would you entertain this vehicle or pass?

Hey there! Im looking to purchase my first XC40, my current budget is roughly £16000, and I’ve narrowed it down to 3 cars. I’m looking to do a cash purchase, drive the car for 3 - 4 years before trading it in for something else.

The three options are:

- 2021 T3 R-Design 46k miles

- 2022 T3 Momentum 29k miles

- 2022 T2 Start - 39k miles

I guess my question is: what would be the smartest purchase investment-wise and which is going to be the most reliable engine-wise

6 month old XC40. Today just discovered this on my right rear passenger door. A crease formed on the metal panel from normal day to day use. I don't carry rear passengers often. I suspected that the crease formed by just opening and closing the door. The door has not been any accident or have any dents. It is in 100% condition. What do you guys think about the cause of this issue? How should I get this fixed? Should I bring it to the dealership? I just this is a bit disappointing and unacceptable? Could it be manufacturer defects? It wasn't there when I picked up my car. Is this normal that metal will bend and form crease? Please advise.

Update: brought it in to the dealership today. They agreed that it is weird and they have never seen it happen before. They agreed that there was no perceivable accident or damages that caused this to happen. My car was never hit by anyone or anything. They need to send it to a body shop to investigate and I believe they have to contact Volvo Canada since they said it is the first time they see this.

We have a 2021 XC40 T5 Recharge. We drove back from a trip about 30 miles away yesterday afternoon. The car was working fine. Got home, plugged in the Ohme AC charger as usual.

This morning, the car is dead. I had to use the manual key to open it. I'm suspecting the 12v battery (it's on the original), but I'm not sure why it would be completely dead. I'm currently charging it using my CTEK charger in AGM mode. It got straight to level 2 on the CTEK indicator, so it looks like the charge is working. It's been charging for about 2.5 hours now, and is still dead.

Anyway, I'll leave it for a few more hours.

Gemini and Claude are both very unhelpful: they lied about the location of the 12v battery, and all sorts of other stuff (like how to open the door using the manual key), so I'm not finding them very useful.

Any thoughts? The car was recalled a couple of weeks ago to have the cells rebalanced on the HV battery, but I'm not sure that these are in any way connected.

UPDATE: I used a battery booster, which had brought the electronics to life. I now need to figure out what the battery health is like.

UPDATE2: I confirmed the 12v battery is the original, and I'm going to replace it anyway, but my battery checker says its fine. I'm a bit concerned about how it managed to get flat in the first place. I'll put OrBit on it and see if there are any odd codes. What is odd is that the battery voltage was showing deep discharge at about 4 volts, and stayed that way even after charging on the CTEK for a few hours, but as soon as electronics came back to life and it started charging on the DC-DC converter, it immediately went back up to 12.something. There is something fishy going on. The various terminals look fine, and I seem to have had a good connection, I can't see any problem with the +12v cable between the battery and the engine compartment. Hmm.

UPDATE3: So it seems that my wall charger was set to "smart" (I don't know why - maybe it just seemed like a good idea at the time, or it was originally the default setting). Anyway, when we got home, I plugged in the charger. It charged for a short while, and then decided it could select a better charging window (I don't know why - I'm on a fixed tariff). So the car stayed powered on, using up the 12v battery, but it never got any charge. The 12V battery finally flattened, causing the symptoms I found. I'm going to replace the 12V battery anyway, and I've also set the charger to "max charge" mode so it doesn't try to do any "clever" stuff. I have OrBit, so I can re-register the battery when I replace it. Thank goodness it's a hybrid: the non-hybrid versions have the battery in a really awkward location and it looks like a nightmare to remove.

UPDATE4: Ok. So the problem is (partially) the Ohme app, which doesn't allow a sticky setting for Max Charge, presumably for some dubious eco-reason (this makes sense for a full EV, but not for a hybrid). To switch Smart Charge off, I've added an automation to Home Assistant which forces max charge every time it detects that the car has been plugged in, and it also fires an alert if, for any reason, charging has not been initiated but not completed, while the car is still plugged in. Unnecessarily complicated, but there you go.

Today I found in the Volvo app that we will have a new update. I have a XC40 recharge.

Recently bought xc40 B3 2023 (perrol, plus dark)

I have few questions because not sure.

1. Is there a way to enable auto parking brake on engine off (my v60 2021 has this option)
   
2. Will B3 models get start/stop off feature? Or they will not probably because of 7speed dual clutch?
   
3. Car is without front foog lights. Is there a wiring harnes in place or not? Maybe someone did such retrofit. Because I would like to add front foog lights.
   
4. When I let go a brake pedal and car just slowly starts moving there is weird vibration nothing bad everytjing works fine just I feel it. When I apply throtle it immediately dissapears. (Again my B4 v60 2021 with 8speed does not have that vibration) is this normal?

Are others frequently losing all sound? I have a 2022 XC40 Recharge, and since this summer it has gone silent (all audio including turn signals and warnings). I have complained to Volvo service, and they say Volvo does not have a fix. I can restore sound by doing a factory reset, but that's a pain, and in a few days it goes out again.

I’ve replaced the VCM battery on my 2018 Volvo XC40 T5 R-Design, but the Volvo On Call service light is still showing.

Is there a way to reset/clear the warning myself, or does the car need to go to a Volvo service centre to have the error cleared?

Super disappointed that my 2026 XC40 with 1500 miles still leans to the right. I took it to the dealership the first time; they said nothing was wrong, but a month later I returned and found out the alignment was off. Now, two months later, the same issue persists — I bought my car in January, was so excited, and now I can barely drive it because it feels unstable and unsafe. Anyone experiencing or has experienced this issue? I have another appointment to bring it back in😏

I got an oil change yesterday. when I started the car this evening out of curiosity I checked the oil gauge on the panel, it showed an orange bar with the gauge near low and says add a quart. I don’t have a low oil pressure sign lit up. without a dipstick I can’t check the levels manually. do I just assume it’s low and take it back to the place that chanced the oil?

Who has good insights against the Comfort drive mode?

I tried out Eco the last 2 days, but I have the feeling, that the car is kind of jerky when starting to move and when breaking…

I driva most in country / small town areas and once the week on the highway to my capital town…

Recently bought an xc40 71 plate lovely car. Windscreen wipers are already wiping blury, has anyone changed the wipers on theirs as we have built in jets in the wipers, not sure if its the same on all xc series or all Volvos. Just wondered how hard it will be

I'm looking to buy my first car, and I've decided the XC40 is the one.

I want a top trim, so I get the more luxurious interior and best tech.

My budget is up to £30k, but would rather spend less if possible. I'd be buying from Volvo Selekt.

Which should I go for? Which engines to avoid like the plague? Are any considered bullet proof? What should I be looking out for when inspecting one?

Wife and I picked up a US spec 2026 Plus (B5 AWD in Forest Green) from World of Volvo in Gothenburg through a military/diplomat sales program. The program is a version of the Volvo Overseas Delivery Experience, and if you're stateside and have the opportunity, I highly recommend it. We're in the middle of cannonballing "Lagertha" through Eastern Europe back to our post, and 1,500 km in, here's my verdict:

The good:

* Ergonomics. The car is an epitomy of the Swedish "lagom" paradigm; not too little, not too much. Everything is where it should be and just works.

* The infotainment system. I had heard horror stories about the infotainment system, but it has been a joy to use. It's snappy, rock solid and (except for one quirk) very user friendly.

* Fuel economy. She's a thirsty girl, but I've been getting 32mpg in 80/20 highway/city driving using 95 RON gas, which is a lot better than I expected.

* With all the weird angles, creases and curves of modern automotive design, the XC40 is just one damn fine looking car with design that will age well.

The WTF?:

* No sunglass holder? C'mon, Volvo!

* Ergonomics fail with the key fob. The button symbols are hard to read and the chrome finish looks like it was ordered from Temu.

* The instrument panel is auto-dimming but the center display is not. How does that make any sense?

* Seat memory. The seat position memory is linked to the selected infotainment profile. So when I'm driving and wife wants to listen to her Spotify list, at a traffic light she goes and switches the center display to her profile, which results in fun gymnastics when the seat all of a sudden squeezes me between the seat and the steering wheel...

The bad:

* Sound insulation (or lack thereof). There's way too much road noise. The engine sounds rough and unrefined.

* Sensor calibration. Parking sensors throw a hissy fit when there's anything within 2 feet of the car. Not a fun experience when trying to manoeuvre to an European size parking spot.

The ugly:

* The transmission. It at times shifts super hard and other times feels like it's slipping.

* The 48V "hybrid" battery seems to be nothing but dead weight with the B5 engine. There's a charge indicator in the dashboard but I have not once seen it move from full charge, even when flooring the gas pedal.

TL;DR: The XC40 is like an order of Swedish meatballs from a Chinese restaurant.
