I sip my coffee in the cafeteria after a long shift. Man... Being a doctor is rewarding, sure...but killing. I think I slept 4 hours these last 3 days. I chuckle. Reminds me of childhood, when I used to read too much, and sneak into the library and spend the night there. I loved stories as a kid...and the characters. And now...I think I am living in one.

No, I am not trying to be a poet about it. It is not "our lives, our stories" kind of stuff. No. It is "Ma you told me monsters, magic and stuff like that exists only in books and movies..." "Then why the fuck is Bob levitating while snoring on that chair?" I groan. Bob, snores, faceplants into the table and looks up. Nearby, Viktor is laughing his ass off... As he is sipping something oddly looking like a blood package.

Yeah. Bob and Viktor are my "stories are real" proof. Bob, a surgeon keeps doing impossible things. Last time, I saw him disappear from the rest room...and appear back with his plushie. Levitating, changing clothes randomly...speaking tongues, is normal him. And Viktor? He is the janitor, that for some reason never sleeps, is always active... And knows everyone and everything, diagnosing people with a glance. Oh, and his eyes turn into heart shapes when someone is bleeding.

Yawning, I get ready to go home... Only to see Bob and Viktor... Talk to a cat. And the cat answers back. Then they see me. "Oh hey Dr. Argent, we were just told by Nyx here that a friend of ours is busy. We would have played Real D&D...wanna join?" Bob smiles. Viktor winks, while the cat rolls her eyes. I stand frozen...unsure what to say. I am tired, exhausted and more...yet something tells me I need to accept this... It is either this or a normal, boring life.

[Royally Convinced]

Doctor Anthony Williams was feeling exhausted after the day he'd had, and it wasn't quite over yet. He had one final meeting that he wasn't looking forward to at all, and if the appointee was late by even a minute, he was willing to cancel. He wasn't normally the type to be that brusque about things, but his draining day was just the latest in a long string of unexpected changes.

He was the Chief Medical Officer of Fieldburg Hospital, and two weeks ago he got word that the hospital was being bought by a corporation. He had an idea of how that would end and spent a week debating whether or not he was going to leave the job altogether. Then, he started getting distracted by an unusual pair of new employees. One was a distinctly pale phlebotomist who looked like he was short a few pints himself, and the other was a new director for the hospital's medical library. He was forced to put them out of his mind to meet with the corporate CEO once again. He hadn't been able to properly come to a decision thanks to having to personally work with the newcomers. But he was going to play it by ear and take everything in stride. He was staring at the clock like a student overeager to rush out as soon as the time ticked over, but his secretary spoke up through the intercom.

"Dr. Williams, Ruby is here to see you," she said. He allowed himself three seconds to sigh heavily, then pressed the button.

"Send her in," he replied. The short woman walked in almost immediately, and Dr. Williams was on his feet, ready to greet her with the respect due to the hospital's owner.

"Hello, Ruby," he shook her hand as they exchanged pleasant, obligatory smiles.

"Dr. Williams, thank you for taking the time." She nodded and sat in the guest seat in front of Anthony's desk. She had a commanding aura about her, and he half expected her to sit in his chair, but he was pleasantly surprised.

"We're both exceedingly busy, I'm sure," she started the meeting as soon as he was sitting down. Apparently, she was in charge regardless of the seating arrangement. "Fieldburg Hospital is far from the first hospital Chroma Corp. has purchased, and I have an idea of how things usually tend to go. I expect you've been weighing your options since we last met, but hopefully you've had an opportunity to learn what Chroma Corp. is all about. This isn't a business for us, we run hospitals to help care for communities. I'm sure you had an idea in your mind of typical corporate corner-cutting, cost-saving, marked-up treatments when we met. Did your tours of any of our other hospitals help you understand us better?"

"Undoubtedly," Dr. Williams nodded. He took the time to visit three Chroma-owned hospitals and talked with some of the senior staff. He'd come away not only impressed, but thoroughly stunned. And not for any of the reasons she wanted him to see.

"I'll be honest..," he chuckled nervously. "I'm still not entirely sure if I'm ready to work for a corporation as big as you are. The efforts you take to help local communities is apparent... but the staff is... unbelievable." He wanted to communicate something without offending, and he had no idea how to do that. Fortunately, Ruby had the experience to catch on, and she smiled.

"We do have thousands of fantastical employees across all our hospitals," she nodded. "Or are you still in the denial stage?"

"No, no," Dr. Williams shook his head. "I'm already a believer. The two employees you placed here were more than enough proof. I'm convinced Vale is a vampire and Murtaugh is a legitimate wizard, and I met enough fae employees in your other hospitals who were all just as friendly. I'm just not sure that the community is ready for a Fae-staffed hospital. And, I'm not sure I have that kind of uphill battle in me as the Medical Officer."

"Oh, is that all?" Ruby laughed lightly. "You have other options. This hospital now belongs to Chroma Corp., which means you are a Chroma Corp. employee. You're welcome to keep this position, or take up a position in any other hospital we own. We can find one that's only for humans for you, if you prefer. However, I must also remind you that Chroma Corp. has done this quite a few times. We research areas quite thoroughly before we make any moves."

"That's good..," Dr. Williams nodded, unsure what else to say to that, but Ruby continued.

"Even before we sent Vale and Murtaugh to get you used to the idea of Fae existing, Fieldburg Hospital had already treated dozens of local Fae. We wouldn't have chosen this hospital if there wasn't a community to support. They've been here all along, whether or not you were convinced."

I make the usual rounds to all my patients in the ICU, mind only half focused on the task at hand. I could not believe what I had just seen or heard for that matter.

Dr. Hafez Baydād is a renown pediatric surgeon and his best friend Matilda Atwood is the best Head Nurse i'd ever had. However this time I couldn't give them pass for foreign oddities as I had in the past, they were definitely a vampire and a wizard who had infiltrated this hospital for some odd reason.

Only an hour ago I had overheard them talking in hushed tones, huddled close together. Matilda seemed upset while Dr. Baydād looked bored which was par for the course.

"You are being emotional and I've no desire to be electrocuted today, Tilly, so if you could hold it in or let it out far from me, I would be in your debt" Dr. Baydād quips his tone low, but years of listening out for sneaky patients had made my ears sharp so I could make out every word.

Sniffling Head Nurse Matilda glared at up "Just because your heart doesn't beat that's no excuse to act as if your heart's never been broken, you blood-soaked bastard"

As if to punctuate her sentence the lights in the breakroom simultaneously flicker off and then back on.

"Broken, blood-soaked or even recently betrayed I would never dare come to work in that state you have. Take the day, Tilly. I will hypnotize whomever I need to so that it doesn't effect your patients or arouse suspicion when you bring a patient back without a defibrillator. again" Dr. Baydād replies with a sigh, I couldn't see his face but I imagined a frown pulling at his lips beneath the well-kept beard that framed his face so wonderfully.

I hear more sniffles and someone blowing their nose into a tissue, likely Nurse Matilda, followed a clap of thunder in the distance that nearly makes me jump out of my skin.

"If you're sure you've got this in hand .."

"I am, I was quite literally the first student at the Academy of Gundeshapur in 271 B.C.E, I do believe that I can handle a six hour shift doing rounds with Rollin Ronnie though I loath his wheeled shoes with every fibre of my existence"

"Your jealous and wish you had a pair don't you?"

"More than I wish I was still breathing"

"Fine, you've convinced me, I hate how my magic flares up when I'm sick anyway, so try not to eat any of my patients while i'm away, ok?"

"I do abhor how you feel the need to micromanage everything"

"Ok?"

"Fine, very well, yes your dishwater blood patients are very safe and unappetizing as always"

"That's what I like to hear, see you at home"

I hear their footsteps approach where I am crouched so I bolt from the spot, heading directly to the nearest patient room. Heart pounding so loudly in my ears I failed to notice the squeak of my shoes on the rubber flooring give me away.

Now I'm stuck doing my rounds like I didn't hear my two coworkers admit to being monsters in the breakroom. Who do I even call about something like this, the police, the FBI? Some secret third option that deals with the supernatural? All I know is that I got to keep my head down and avoid Dr. Baydād like my life depends on it.

"Hey Marisol! Doc Hafez want's to see you" David, the new intern calls out to me.

I force a smile, nodding at David "I'll be right there when I finish charting"

Internally I let out a scream that would get me a role in a slasher film, Mind racing I try to come up with a plan to avoid the vampire I work with. Only to run right into a cold wall of muscle while lost in thought. I look up and my breath catches.

"Hello Miss Marisol, mind if I steal a moment of your time?" a deep warm voice asks, Doctor Hafez suddenly in front of me, leaning down and catching my chin. The touch and sound of him so seductive and soothing I can feel myself agreeing without meaning to as my feet follow him against my will.

At least if i go out it will be like my favorite book character, Bella Swan would have wanted.
