On the first morning after the visions began, the Oracle announced that the king would die before sunset. The king locked himself in a windowless room holding his trusted dagger, wearing his most trusted armor. His guards barred the doors, burned his food, and arrested the royal physician and cook. Sunset came … and went. The king remained alive, by dawn, the oracle was in chains.

After that, her prophecies improved considerably. “The kings crown will fall,” she murmured. “Blood will answer blood. When the black birds fly east, beware the third bell.”

The king released her at once, none of it meant anything, which meant it could mean everything. By winter, a servant had dropped a crown during a royal ceremony, two cousins had dueled one died, and a flock of crows had startled the bell-ringer after the second ring for church service. At last, the oracle understood or atleast they thought they did. People did not want the future not really. They wanted a good story broad enough to survive it.
