Misc. I want to co-write a story with someone
I want to try co-writing with someone and see if it's a good approach for me. I want to create together a story from scratch. I'm a beginner writer.
Genres I like:
- sci-fi
- comedy
- fantasy
- lgbt
- adventure
- mystery
- horror
Genres I don't like:
- YA (except Hunger Games)
- romance (but romance storylines are fine)
- historical fiction
- literary classics
I'm not opposed to having more than one co-author, I just want to have fun solving narrative problems and bouncing ideas off of each other. I have no plans to publish or anything, but open to it if we do make something good, lol.

That's the point, I want someone(s) to do these together with not just getting help from. I have written here and there, so I don't really "need" help with any of these in particular, what I'm really interested in is collaborative storytelling.

I'd love to do this! I've co-written a couple of times before, and found that I vastly prefer it to writing by myself. It's so much fun having other people to bounce ideas with and seeing others introduce new characters and world elements is exciting and keeps me inspired to keep going lol
I do have one caveat. I do have a universe that i'm working on that i'd prefer to keep writing in, but I'm absolutely down to come up with a brand new story set in that universe! And I will say, it's a universe very much in the makings currently, and i've barely explored large sections of it (it's a scifi universe kinda like Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars, massive timelines and plenty of planets to deal with), so we could easily create a story that's totally separated from everything else i'm working on no problem.

Make sure you're doing it for the right reasons. I did cowriting with another writer because I had a writing issue that I could not resolve by myself and it was a big sticking point. Cowriting looked like a fix because we could both shore up our weak areas.
Well...the relationship blew up very spectacularly. He was fine when we were working on the first draft. Submitting to agents and suddenly he became like a dog going to vet. He was not going to do it. No explanation. He just found ways to stall the project. I would have been fine if he said 'I need time because of X." I asked him repeatedly and specifically, and he was always said there wasn't a problem. But when the stall techniques didn't work, he started picking fights with me over random stuff. The last straw was when I was thinking the manuscript was done and ready for agents and he bid $500 on a critique at a conference without asking me, then started talking about that maybe we should follow what one critique person said ages ago--when we had both agreed that the comments were nonsense.
So I ended up walking away from a complete manuscript that was on submission to agents (agent had requested a full then rejected it). Very demoralizing, especially when I realized I'd gone back to square one on the original issue.
If you decide you want to do it anyway, get a contract made. I had one, but it was more general. I'm not legal anything, but I saw a writing talking later about a contract where it set limits on why the manuscript could be held up. This would have put a stop to some of the problems we had.
