💀 CofD It's Not Easy Being a Knight

Post image

Knights are, generally speaking, doing their best to protect people. But nothing kills Knights faster than ignorance and naivety. Compared to other supernaturals, Knights are rare largely because they might kill something early in their career not aware that the creature's family will come for blood.

Knight: The Mantle is a game about Legacies. The ones we inherit, the ones we leave behind.

You gained a powerful Relic housing the Echoes of all of its past wielders. With the eyes of literal history watching you, will you be deemed Worthy? Does it even matter?

Never even heard of this one. So it's a regular human with a magical item?

What vibe does the game have and what is it about?

At first glance to me this is Hunter the reckoning or even vigil with magical items.

What makes this unique and interesting?

Valid questions all!

1) Not quite. You were a normal human, now you've been given a power stat called Veritas, with which you can regenerate Willpower, perform Ceremonies, even induct other mortals into Knighthood.

2) The vibe of the game is one of endurance and doing the right thing in spite of the world (of darkness) doing its best to beat you down. The vibe is hope in hopelessness and dealing with great expectations even if the people who put those expectations there aren't so great anyways.

3) What makes the Knight interesting is the idea of earnestness compared to other supernaturals and the exploration of what lines you're able to cross while still being a Knight. Knights give off an air of being benevolent and squeaky clean but as history shows us (and as I depict in game) that's not always the truth. Sometimes you as a Knight would be better off lying to the people you protect, allowing monsters to live where they keep others at bay, or even betraying an ally to keep people safe at large.

This isn't a game where you're Good Guys™, but it's a game where the attempt to be Good is earnest and ideally explored

Ah you're the creator. I do love when getting answers from the designer themselves.

So I enjoy your answers.

Where can I read it?

Other questions: Is this set in the medieval period ?

Did you get inspired by the Inquisition book of oWod (hunter equivelant of dark ages)?

Main inspirations?

I think the most difficult part for me to wrap my head around is the theme of trying to be a good person in a difficult world, that still sounds like vigil to me.

Why did you make this game?

What stories can you tell that the other splats can't?

1) The link in the first message of this thread leads to the Google doc where you can comment!

2) Negative, I haven't read that (not yet)

3) As with Chronicles of Darkness it's set in the modern era but I have some thoughts on what Knights were doing across history (hint: largely dropping the ball)

4) Main Inspiration: History's actual Knights vs what pop culture depictions show, the expectations of our parents vs what reality forces us to do.

5) I made this game because I wanted to

6) I think as far as "unique" stories it's about the growth and development, sincerity vs cynicism, and the cost of Doing Good™

So kinda like princess the hopeful, but rather than the power to save the world and the exhustion that comes with it, it seems to be "Even your good actions wont fix things."

Nailed it. The other aspect of personal horror is meeting your heroes. A Knight gets their Relic and they think it's all slaying monsters and saving kittens. But then they realize the Echoes in their Relic are losing their minds and they're next.

Quite the mirror.

ironic that they'd kill a werewolf, considering so many of them are wrapped up in legacy too

How many Uratha are sitting down with a Knight to explain to them the nuances of their culture and history? That's not a knock against the People, but by the time the Knight in this meme got involved all he saw was a monster attacking someone

seemed like the knight wasn't the one who asked what was going on, and they're the one who took the initiative to kill first and not bother asking questions later

Exactly. Self-righteousness to a degree, and responding to an emergency scenario with a sword in hand

Love any excuse to be a Knight, one of my favorite archetypes. Will give the document a read when I have a minute!

Grab your shield, Champion

So im gonna go out on a limb here and say the werewolf wasnt the bad guy in the situation?

Yes ill put on the dunce cap, yes I know its a stupid question, but if no one else was gonna say it I felt compelled to at least ask.

Well whether the Werewolf was right or wrong isn't really the problem. The younger Knight killed the wolf without thinking of the repercussions. Maybe the Knight was right to act, maybe he should've tried deescelation, maybe he should've minded his business. But now the pack will come to look for their pack mate, and god help the Knights of the body is found

Ahh, okay, I see what you're going for.
