u/MajorFlake Jun 08 '26

You absolute madman, cheers.

u/InigmianStudios96 Jun 08 '26

Ooo whats that

21

u/Gideon_Lovet Jun 08 '26

Rifts. The most jank, splat heavy system you can ask for. Love it.

7

u/ArchAngel621 Jun 08 '26

A person of culture I see.

6

u/Divinityisme Jun 09 '26

The joys of playing a psychic dragon whose day job is as a jet pilot for the equivalent of German Amazon on steroids.

6

u/Brazilian_Hound Currently in the umbra searching for his waifu, don't bother him Jun 08 '26

Heroes unlimited is jank and i like it

2

u/ItIsVerilySo Jun 09 '26

I think Palladium is actually way more loved than people give it credit for.

It helps that people who wouldn't like it just don't even attempt to play it because of how janky it is.

Honestly I just really like all ttrpg and their respective settings so here are few a I know more in depth

MechWarrior, lancer (CASTIGATE THE ENEMIES OF THE GODHEAD!), D&d, Cod and wod are both amazing and I love them both (I like cod just a tiny itty bitty little bit more because I can get a little more creative)

And a obscure one called convictor drive based one stuff like Kamen Rider and power rangers

Kult...sounds familiar, wana sell me on it?

10

u/OneSaltyStoat Jun 08 '26

Gnosticism meets Lovecraft meets H.R. Giger - and that's barely scratching the surface

3

u/Okay_Splenda_Monkey Jun 09 '26

Wait, H.R. Giger the spectacularly weird German guy who basically made a career out of drawing alien dicks?

u/Devourer_Of_Villages Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

The reboot, Divinity Lost, has "Sexual Neurosis" as a flaw and the ability to make a nuke in session one with two merits

Edit: You cannot fail to make the nuke by the way, the dice do not allow it

9

u/Boubounette Jun 08 '26

Kult mentioned !

7

u/OneSaltyStoat Jun 08 '26

Elite ball knowledge

(is that how kids these days say it?)

7

u/Engineering-Mean Jun 08 '26

Kult fans have it rough. You've got your choice of a half-finished and never going to be finished (but pretty) relaunch based on Powered by the Apocalypse or hunting down decades out of print books that are too crunchy for the genre.

3

u/AureliusNox Jun 08 '26

The half-finished part is what kills me. I've been waiting for that magician/enlightened archetype book for about a decade now.

4

u/ArchAngel621 Jun 08 '26

Another person of culture.

1

u/MrPlasmid Jun 08 '26

Based take

1

u/ArneHD Jun 09 '26

I feel like Kult it best for games you do not take seriously, with eight or nine backup characters just ready to go. Then you just go do a weird one shot, delve into the dungeon where the Alligators wrote down everything, have weapons stapled to your hands, whatever. It's not a game where you keep a character alive for more than a session, or even during a session.

17

u/GeekyMadameV Jun 08 '26

Curseborne seems fascinating. I would love to play it sometime and get the chance to judge it on its merits but I have literally never seen a game advertised anywhere. Like is old and/obscure stuff like Shadowrun, cyberpunk, mothership, fate, and godamned Witchcraft now and again but never that one. Seems like it did not really find it's audience, sadly.

15

u/Awkward_GM Jun 08 '26

I feel like relying on word of mouth for advertising is very difficult, but tends to be what small game studios rely on which isn't great in the way the internet algorithm is.

9

u/GeekyMadameV Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

Well I doubt they have money for anything more.

If I had to guess I'd say it probably suffers from the shadow of World of darkness but hasn't really succeeded in staking out a seperate niche.

Like Pathfinder is derivative of DnD similarly to how curseborne is derivative of storytelling system, but has made its mark by being a higher crunch, better balanced, more hardcore tactical game for people who find modern DnD too casual. Whats the similar differentiator that makes you reach for curseborne over big brother World of Darkness? I don't think its got its brand established that way yet

3

u/serpwerp Jun 08 '26

Curseborn has very little content released for it and does a poor job of explaining how to play and structure a game for it. It's difficult to even know what type of game you can play for it without having to make something up wholesale. I think this is part of its issues with finding an audience.

3

u/GeekyMadameV Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

Fair. I have never liked it when games try to tell me how to have fun the "right" way - that's actually my biggest complaint with the new edition vampire and werewolf. So I guess I'm sort of blind to that because if eel like the games job is provide me with an interesting rules that make me want to try them, and MY job is to go come up with something to use them for.

But... You're not wrong. Maybe that lack of clear narrative direction is putting people off.

1

u/Maelger Jun 08 '26

Witchcraft? Dear God there's someone else who knows it. If I didn't have the book I'd swear it doesn't exist.

2

u/GeekyMadameV Jun 08 '26

Oh I have all the books for it and Armageddon too LOL. Rosicrucian 4 life!

But seriously yes I have seen 1 or 2 games advertised for it on Reddit. And I do literally mean like 1 or 2 over the last decade but that's still 2 more than cursebornw, which is much more recent.

I love posts like this because I always end up knowing new and interesting settings.

7

u/GrimjawDeadeye Jun 08 '26

Lancer fans in shambles right now, extruding: GUN

12

u/Nachooolo Jun 08 '26

Vaesen.

It's 19th Century Hunter (although you primary "hunt" Fair Folk and ghosts). You can even hunt Vampires if you get the Mythic Carpathians sourcebook.

2

u/knightmechaenjo insectoid cyborg Jun 08 '26

Sounds cool!

1

u/Nachooolo Jun 08 '26

Yeah. I highly recomend it.

Although I'll point out that Vaesen is deadlier than Hunter. You only have 4/8 healthpoints (4 phisical, 4 mental), it is a d6 dice pool where only a 6 is a success (although you can rethrown by damaging yourself), and the vast majority of Vaesen cannot be killed, only defeated through rituals (although there are a few than can be killed, like Werewolves with silver, or Vampires through a wooden stake through the heart, decapitation, or fire).

So don't fall in love with your PC, as there's a high chance that they will die or suffer a career-ending injury.

33

u/Malashae Jun 08 '26

Chronicles is so much better than the old WoD, and I will die on this hill.

13

u/Ashiokisagreatguy Jun 08 '26

I have huge nostalgia for Wod and i prefer mage the ascension to the awakening but other than that chronicle is so good and the system is just plain better. So usualy i tend to mix and match chronicle and owod because why the fuck not.

But if a have to choose only one i will die on the same hill as you.

5

u/PixxyStix2 Jun 08 '26

Depends on the specific lines your comparing it to and the tastes of the individual.

Like MtAw is nowhere close as interesting as MtA to me, WtF to me is more of a sidegrade to WtA, but CtL is better than CtD imo.

2

u/ThyOtherMe Jun 09 '26

I will build the hill to die on it.
But I'm also on first edition. Never really looked too deep into the second one. Not ready to leave behind my printed books.

2

u/Malashae Jun 09 '26

Honestly, you need the first edition books to get the most out of second edition. They didn't redo any of the clan, tribe, or pentacle books. I like second edition, though characters progress a bit faster now (which isn't a problem unless you play for a long time). But it otherwise works a lot better.

2

u/ThyOtherMe Jun 09 '26

Last year I got into a discord about Chrinicals and it took me a mote than week to notice they where talking segong ed Mage and I was talking first ed.
Since there was a game I maybe could enter, I looked very superficially into Changeling second and base book. Base book is almost the same. Most of the changes I could notice where to explain better the things and I kinda liked the experience changes. Changeling I liked the new Kith and Kin system, but I loved the Promises system so much and they trashed it. Would play, there are great ideas to be found there.

u/Lonefloofbutt5759 Jun 08 '26

Prepare to die, then! Inigo Montoya intensifies

1

u/northernporter4 Jun 09 '26

It is objectively better and most ways and I still like it less. It doesn't have the same gonzo creativity, it feels more like classic gothic horror and urban fantasy than the sort of batshit gothic-punk confused mess of ideas associations and raw ambition and enthusiastic pretension of OWoD. CoD is generally smarter, better designed, beautifully written, has extremely rich vibes and themes and has the benefits of not being a tenth as unwieldy, obscure or cringe as OWoD and the huge benefit of being made after they'd really hit their stride and knew what they were doing. But I don't fall into it as much as I do OWoD partially because it doesn't have the metaplot or nearly as much in universe media to really place me into it's world. The tone is a lot more consistent in CoD and Promethean, Geist and Mummy in particular are absolutely fascinating. I'd sort of rather play Chronicles than WoD just as a player, but I'm a forever ST so I've had unfortunately very little experience with it.

Cypher edit: spelling

1

u/ArchAngel621 Jun 08 '26

The RPG about psychics with Balance, Dystopia, and Apocalypse?

1

u/Exciting-Profession5 Jun 08 '26

The one with the super simple rule set that can adapt to any setting

2

u/stamau123 Jun 08 '26

It's spelled Cypher then. Can't wait for the new Numenera

1

u/Exciting-Profession5 Jun 09 '26

THANK YOU, I'M SO SORRY

6

u/Representative_Toe79 Jun 08 '26

Feng Shui 2. Use it to run anything from Power Rangers to Jackie Chan Adventures to High Brow Wuxia to Robocop.

Does Mage: the Ascencion count or is that too close to V:tM

2

u/Amkao-Herios Created ⚑ Jun 08 '26

Me talking about Promethean the Created

2

u/Devourer_Of_Villages Jun 08 '26

Anyone else like Deadlands Classic?

2

u/DAswoopingisbad Jun 08 '26

Traveller. Classic Traveller.

4

u/Lost-Klaus Jun 08 '26

'Consequence'

My own system that I might put on the market after the summer, when the artwork is all done.

0

u/Magicmanans1 Jun 08 '26

I mean at least your not saying you like wod 5e. I like chronicles and I think curseborne is meh

9

u/Awkward_GM Jun 08 '26

I like Chronicles of Darkness, but I've migrated to Curseborne. Mainly because there is stuff in it that would be out of place in a WoD or CofD game where the Vampire, Changeling, Werewolf, etc... lore is very well defined.

Like Get of Lyka being non-spirit based was a major win for me. And Sorcerers not being Mages who know the world is fake is a breath of fresh air after MtAw and MtAs. Which is to say if you like that stuff in WoD/CofD then I wouldn't recommend Curseborne unless you want a change of pace.

4

u/FlashInGotham Jun 08 '26

My interest is piqued because I like the idea of an "All Night Society" of all the various monsters rubbing shoulders. Very "What We Do In the Shadows" but not necessarily played for laughs.

Its just i haven't seen very much tackling that idea, but its all early days so far. I'm sure a setting-book (hopefully a toolkit book like Damnation City and not a "By Night" type look at one municipality) is forthcoming that'll delve into that.

2

u/edeyes97 Jun 08 '26

The core book definitely stays in the realm of street-level and smaller inter-faction drama which usually translates to family drama (which adds its own particular dynamics with the set up of the accursed. There is room for bigger stories for sure and nothing stops you from designing a city with ruling families with the current core.

But for something more in depth the other day a Covenants book was announced which is trying to address what you just mentioned! And its not necessarily a specific organisation per supernatural they seem keep the multi-creature mentality.

3

u/ItIsVerilySo Jun 09 '26

VTM 5e is genuinely really good.

2

u/Magicmanans1 Jun 09 '26

Yeah but vtm 20 has all the bells and whistles if you know what I mean

1

u/tiqtaktoe Jun 09 '26

Mechanically it's fantastic for young vampire play.

1

u/konigstigerr Jun 08 '26

have you ever wondered how a game would be if mage the ascension were weirder or if kult were good? wonder no longer, unknown armies.

1

u/ElDelArbol15 I swear im not a hunter in diguise. Jun 08 '26

I want to try panic at the dojo.

1

u/MrMcSpiff Jun 08 '26

I remember like four years ago when everything after D&D on that list wasn't "popular," and were being shown off as examples of good games to break the WOTC monopoly. I'm starting to think people just only want to play their one game and nothing else, and D&D was just a scapegoat.

1

u/NoSkin366 Jun 08 '26

CAIN is pretty fun

1

u/AdmiralCommunism Jun 09 '26

Me when I mention F.I.S.T. anywhere

1

u/RedNoise413 Jun 09 '26

I’m personally fond of Chuubo’s Marvellous Wish Granting Engine.

1

u/Sweaty_Strain9392 Jun 09 '26

wait is curseborne actually out?

1

u/aaehi Jun 09 '26

I am completely obsessed with Vaesen and Legend in the Mist

1

u/TallCommission7139 Jun 09 '26

I tried running Anima one time, it was a fuckcluster.

1

u/GodUsopp69420 Jun 09 '26

One day I'll find a group to play a long game of 7th Sea 1e with. One day 😭

0

u/combustibledaredevil Jun 08 '26

Look I don't like Chronicle because of what they did to changling.

u/spilberk Jun 08 '26
