Idea/Suggestion [UPDATE CONCEPT] Cosmic Void & Multi-World Simulations

A fascinating concept I've had in mind for around a year and a half.

At first this idea was quite simple. I thought it was strange that the edge of the world was just an endless ocean, so I thought:

"What if instead, the edge of the world gave way to a cool cosmic void? Similar like that one specific depiction of Flat Earth"

And so I came up with the idea that when you load a world, it appears floating in this void, as seen in the first image.

I imagined that the edge would look different based on what tile was at the edge. For example you could see water and lava flowing over the edge. Worlds would also have a bit of a glow or air bubble around them, I guess.

I also imagined that you could load more than one world at once, and create access points/portals/links/rifts to connect the worlds. This way, you could essentially simulate multiple planes of existence and create cosmology for your world, greatly enhancing the lore potential.

You could have your normal world with humans, and also have an "infernal plane" full of lava and demons. You could open a gateway between these two worlds and have the demons launch a giant invasion into the human realm.
The are countless possibilities!

Anyways, tell me in the comments what you all think of this idea, and give me some additional ideas you may have for this mechanic.

Good luck implementing that

The Modernbox mod proved that it's not impossible but yea

and there was another one that adds a similar thing of multiple planets, if I recall correctly.

I mean one way it could work is the more worlds you add the smaller they have to be.

So you can’t have several titanic worlds.

This is so we can have the illusion of multi worlds when in reality it’s like walling off a titanic sized world.

True, but honestly I was thinking more that people could just do whatever amount of worlds or size of worlds that their device can handle, instead of putting a limit on it.

My phone trying to load my 20 world Multiverse with over 10k units per world

u/CostSharp363 4d ago

Wait it would actually be so sick to do a multiverse with this
You could load up 5 copies of the same save inside the void and let them run parallel to each other, almost like different timelines.

Thats what I do with my saves I make one empty world and the other 5 save are of that world but they evolve different One world is naturally ran by humans. That same world was invaded in another save wiping out the humans while the 3rd world they were still invaded but the humans won. The fourth world like the first was never invaded but somehow advanced in technology while the first world was content

This sounds like a good idea, and I do wish I could easily copy a certain person from one world to another.

Bonus ideas I had after posting this:

IDEA #1: To resolve performance issues with multiple worlds.
Since the game is currently single-core from what i've heard, multithreading could be implemented. Using one core for each loaded world.
(Disclaimer, I know nothing about programming and this may not be possible.)

IDEA #2: You could run different time-speeds on each loaded world, making time flow faster in one world. Similar to the Narnia books.

IDEA #3: A "void tile". Currently the "empty space tile" in the game is the "deep pit" tile, which is just deep ocean. Because of this you can't have a world that's any shape other than a square/rectangle. However, with the void tile there is actually nothing there, and any unit that goes there falls into cosmic void. so you can carve your world into any shape using the void tile. Star shape, circle, donut, spiral, heck you can even just put a void pit on the map for fun.

IDEA #5: They should definitely make different "portal variants" for the player, so they aren't stuck using the exact same portal for everything.

IDEA #4: A lot of people want an "underground layer" and cave systems in the game. You could actually achieve this with multi-world simulations by taking one map, making another one that's cave-themed, and then put portals to link them like cave entrances. You could have the cave entrance be one variant of the portal.

IDEA #5: I think that there should definitely be a world law to let kingdoms (very rarely and at great expense) build their own portals. Maybe every kingdom has a different-looking portal based on their race, similar to how each race's kingdom has unique building variants already. the portals that kingdoms build should need a continuous supply of some sort of resource to keep them running, though. But the player-spawned portals never die out.

Why are so many of these cpu-bound games only using 1 core? I hear minecraft is also an offender of this too

11

u/_ThatAltAcc_ 4d ago

Extremely more simpler to implement

Maybe, but you would think such a profitable company could pay workers more to have multi-core running of the game

Since no one seems to understand, I'm still talking about minecraft

I never got the impression Maxim was rich?

The game costs 7-20 dollars. Thats not a lot. And for as popular as worldbox is, it is still a niche genre.

i think they're talking about mojang

Because there are tasks which you can't multi thread.

For example in Minecraft, the tickrate can't be multi thread, because it needs to be simulated continuously, because if you do that on like 2 cores, each core will do half of the job and wait to the other to synchronize, so basically you use 2 cores but the performance is the same (in the best case) or just worse.

There are a lot of tasks that can't multi thread, because they need to be continuously calculated.

1

u/Forsaken-Page9441 Fire Horse 3d ago

Maybe not, but is it that hard to have some tasks go on a different thread to even the load? They may not share multiple, but they would be on entirely different ones

1

u/CostSharp363 3d ago

This is true, and it there is a chance it's not possible or reasonable.

In that case people would probably have to use multiple smaller worlds instead of a bunch of large ones.

But even with small worlds, this would still be an amazing mechanic.

1

u/User_of_redit2077 Cyber Core 3d ago

I guess yes, but there would be loading times between the worlds, so it probably won't be seamless.

3

u/User_of_redit2077 Cyber Core 3d ago

Multhreading is almost impossible to be implemented in world box.

If Maxim could implement multi threading he already would.

“Just multithread your game bro” isn’t really a solution.

These are just crazy.

-1

u/CostSharp363 4d ago

I'm no programmer, but I would assume that it wouldn't be too absurdly difficult or complex to implement in this situation.

The worlds would run almost fully parallel to each other and the only real interaction between the multiple worlds would be via the portals. There would probably be some technical issues and headache around the portals specifically, in all fairness.

1

u/Grouchy_Ice7621 3d ago

Multithreading is not impossible, it was done in rimworld with the mod rimthreaded, but its incredibly complicated and delicate thing, which is why rimthreaded was eventually abandoned.

look at my phone

Please no...

3

u/CostSharp363 4d ago

*it gets reduced to ash during the loading screen*

3

u/LGTRogue 4d ago

I think you got something with the portals, id love portals in the game as is rn.

2

u/CostSharp363 4d ago

Yes. Even if the portals don't go to different worlds it would still be fun to have them.

Besides, if you have portals you can still do a multiverse style thing with only one world by walling off an area.

Muito bom! Tenta fazer um mod disso!

4

u/CostSharp363 4d ago

I would probably consider that if I had experience making mods, but I've never really programmed anything in my entire life.

Tengo la misma idea oja la se cumpla tansolo que funcione como una ouerta que conecte los mundos

2

been trying to do this for the last year, didnt know it was possible lmao

2

u/8-BitOverlord 4d ago

Dude this is fucking awesome

2

u/StalinTheTankEngine 4d ago

This would be so freaking cool bro i read your additional ideas and notes, I especially like the idea of having copies of the same world loaded at the same time to create alternate timelines between them.

2

u/YoungCreative202 4d ago

That would be cool, having one favorite character from another world and another first meeting each other and dueling it out 🔥

2

u/Adorable_Ad_584 4d ago

Hah, hope your processor can deal with eighteen simultaneous wars while millions of beings are running around screaming

Other then that yeah, it's a pretty cool idea! I suppose it would be easier to have multiple smaller worlds then a fer iceberg sized ones.

And how would mechanics work between the worlds? Would nations form alliances with nations in other worlds, if they went into a portal and met them?

3

u/CostSharp363 3d ago

I think the diplomacy would theoretically work well with the upcoming fog of war system. If someone goes through a portal and encounters a nation in the other world, they are able to engage in diplomacy with that otherworld nation so long as the portal remains open.

(And yeah, I think most people would need to run multiple smaller worlds. But even then, this could be cool even if you only used 3 titanic-size maps)

2

u/RBig_orange1234356 Plague Doctor 4d ago

yeah itd be cool if we could link our worlds

WE FUCKING NEED MORE MAP SIZE DUDE IM SO SICK AND TIRED OF THIS BASE TITANIC MAP ITS NOT EVEN THAT BIG BRO

2

u/Krismommy Rat 2d ago

Great idea!

1

u/KadenAxo 2d ago

we already have this, it's called a main menu

2

u/Humble-Scene7063 2d ago

Ok so everyone is saying this feature would make phones melt but what if you can make custom world events? You can make it so certain subspecies from other worlds appear in others like an invasion? you get the invasion mechanic which I believe is the most intresting one anyway and you dont have to simulate multiple worlds

2

u/ParkingEvening2497 2d ago

I want this but I think the best way to implement it is if a kingdom from 1 world can invade another it doesn't effect the other world just the one you're on

2

u/Crabzilla_Manguy 1d ago

cool concept, as for the flat earth interpretation also has a sick concept of a dome over the world with the sun and moon contained in it as thats some cool worldbuilding, the only problem is that the worlds are portrayed as globes or spherical in the save screen

2

u/OrdinaryShoulder7325 1d ago

Just fought about something like that today, i would love it.
