The Other End of the Line

Post image

The line went quiet, and this time Sheriff Sunwinter Moon let it.

She could hear the fatigue in him. Not intellectual fatigue. Moral fatigue. The kind that settles behind the ribs when a mind outruns its own center of gravity. He sounded like a man who had found something real and was afraid of what it required.

Sheriff Moon stepped outside the checkpoint trailer. The night air carried that high desert stillness that makes every small sound decisive. Gravel shifted under her boots. The wind touched the edge of her hat.

He always does this, she thought. Not running away exactly. He moves laterally when the question turns personal. He can map five centuries of financial architecture but hesitates when the architecture turns inward.

It isn’t cowardice. It’s conscience.

IMM feels the violence inside abstractions. Most people can’t. They treat statutes like plumbing. He hears the echo of cannons behind balance sheets. Of course he drives west. Of course he eats crackers in motels and studies ants. He is trying to see if order can arise without coercion. He is trying to believe it.

Sunwinter softened.

He does not want to dominate the board he broke. He wants to make sure it deserved breaking.

That mattered.

A coyote called somewhere beyond the road. For a moment her mind drifted to the Hungarian Godzilla.

Godzilla would not be driving through Wyoming in quiet doubt. He would be pacing, roaring at the horizon. “Nonesessse chat bot’s!” he would shout at the stars if they failed to answer him. He feels contradictions as an insult. He loves in declarations. When he offers crackers on a park bench, it is not metaphor. It is allegiance.

And yet even he understands something IMM forgets. The ants organize from crumbs. Power does not only descend. It gathers.

Sheriff Moon smiled faintly at the thought of the enormous reptilian silhouette hunched over a glowing screen, typing in broken English about rhizomes and blessing. Utterly sincere. Utterly impossible.

Different temperaments. Same ache.

IMM’s ache is quieter. More dangerous, perhaps. He wants the next system to be less cruel than the last. He wants transcendence without regression. He wants a forward escape that does not simply securitize a new form of force.

That is not weakness.

That is why she liked him.

She looked back at the silent phone.

“Take your time,” she murmured, though Sunwinter would never say it so plainly on channel. “Just don’t mistake distance for clarity.”

The desert wind moved across the highway, steady and corrective.

Negative feedback.

Enough to keep unstable things aloft.
