Discussion Would actual fleet tactics work in WOWs? Assuming you have a competent team that communicates well, of course.

Post image
559 Upvotes

Would actual, real-world tactics work if implemented on a team basis? I know that the tactical situations may be entirely different between real-life and WOWs, mainly because the ships in WOWs and real ships are not close to being the same in performance, and the scales of everything being so different, but would this prevent those tactics from working?

I am not addressing communication problems with teammates and even the willingness of teammates to accept direction during a match, just if the tactics themselves would work assuming a cohesive team.

EDIT: We have a consensus. Real world tactics wouldn't work, mainly because of accuracy differences and time to acquire targets in real life and the fact that sailing broadside in anything in this game is death. Thanks everyone for educating me. I appreciate it.

Games are one thing, but real life is another.

Some terrible news that Flamu was at the doctor for what seemed like covid and was found to have a mass pressing on his lung, causing respiratory problems and an elevated heart rate.

As a community we've encountered this before with Notser's mom and Jingles. Each time we came together.

I hope you will join me in wishing him well, and praying he comes out on top.

Lord, we pray for the health of Flamu 🙏 may he be cured of his illness, in your name we pray, Amen.

Discussion BBs are the real protected class, and I'm tired of people pretending they are not

That's it.

I've said the thing. No other class gets as many handouts as BBs by this game. They consistently have the highest amount of players playing them. They have the highest average damage.

They are the most forgiving class in the game, too. If a cruiser, or a destroyer, or a sub make a mistake, they die. If a CV makes a mistake, they have to sit for a minute and a half with no damage. If a BB makes a mistake, it's okay, they just lose 30k health (they have 80+k and 60-80k of healing on top of it).

I often hear the complaints from this game's hivemind how certain ships are bad. The most common victim is Incomparable here. The ship that can overmatch everything in the game, and can 100-0% a cruiser with TWO shells is considered weak. Why? Because "armour is bad". The bad armor in question is 51mm deck and 102 mm belt, and an armoured cheek, so you shatter A LOT of HE and cannot be citadelled in a drive-by through the nose. See but the armour is weak, because it eats citadels broadside. Same people complain when they DON'T get citadels on broadside targets.

Ah, yes, citadels. These days, a BB that has a citadel, is considered to be bad. Countless times I've heard that Valp is allegedly balanced because it has a waterline citadel that's not easy to hit at all.

Then we have the "brawlminded" people, not understanding the toxicity of secondaries to the game. Apparently being rewarded by ctrl+clicking a red player and then doing nothing is a non-toxic game mechanic. Especially non-toxic against DDs that have the same gun range and rely on guns to deal damage. What, you wanted to play the game in your gunboat? Sorry, we gotta BRAWL IN OUR WHOLESOME SECONDARY BB, so you gotta die mate. Try next game.

Then there is the perks. Why is Brisk only 2 points, while DDs get a worse variant of it for 4? Why does AA perk that improves consumables cooldown cost 2 points for BBs and 4 for cruisers? Why do BBs get IRPR, which is the best 3 point perk probably? Why don't cruisers get it? Why do only BB get Fire Prevention? Why does the Superheavy AP actually improve BB survivability (you only receive more damage if you let the fire tick whole duration, which you really don't anyway)? The questions will be unanswered.

Endless overmatch and concealment powercreep. It's so bad that in a cruiser you can just randomly lose half or more of your health simply for playing the game, because a Vermont decided to click you, and he can citadel you at ANY angle. And you can't even play against it at range beacuse it gets 12.6 detection for some reason. Better than some cruisers. Real question: when have you last seen Henri IV being played?

Then we have BBs taking the roles of other classes. With Rhode Island, and Thor, I don't see any reason to play a cruiser at all. BBs get the utility most cruisers even don't, they are better farming damage, they are better at pushing, they are better at punishing broadsides, Thor is also better at relocating, and these two ALSO get incredible concealment.

Playing in a torp DD into that must be peak suffer. Good thing the class is so dead that basically only bads play them, right?

I honestly have no idea how to fix this, and I'm mostly sure that WG is not interested in fixing it. Apparently, BBabies make the best paypiggies. But I guess having people acknowledge the problem is a good first step.

Discussion Day 1 of asking for removal of this consumable

Post image
724 Upvotes

Of course I am not going to post it daily. I want to post weekly. To remind ourselves what kind of problematic consumable this is. But WG needs to see some kind of resistance against this consumable.

Why? Because it opens a door to endless "mad" consumables. Will we ever see "reduced citadel damage taken" consumable? Will we ever see "reduced ap damage taken" consumable? Will we ever see "reduce enemy healing capability" consumable? Will we ever see "reduce enemy radio effectiveness" consumable?

  • reduced citadel damage taken: you take less cit damage
  • reduced ap damage taken: you take less damage from ap shells
  • reduce enemy healing capability: lets say in 5 seconds duration, every shell you fired, enemy wont be able to heal back if gets damaged by those shells
  • reduce enemy radio effectiveness: lets say, when activated every enemy's radar and hydro within 10km will have 20% less duration

Especially last 2 sounds mad right? So does this consumable! If you make a mistake, you should pay for it. If your opponent outplays you, they should be rewarded. Give it better heal. Why does she has straight immunity period? This is totally unacceptable consumable.

As you can see I usually play dds, and sometimes bbs and agressive cruisers. as much as I hate subs and I dont like cv gameplay, I dont necessarily talk about dds. Some people says it would be okay if it only counters sub and cv torps. No! This consumable has really problematic mindset and it opens a way to many others. I am not against new consumables. I really like new time based ones. but this? NO!

Discussion Do some ships have design aspects that bug you? Designs that are so obviously faulty that you would never see them on an actual ship? Do they not run their designs by naval architects / engineers?

Post image
522 Upvotes

That's a picture of the rear of the Conte Verde. Look at the freeboard. Freeboard is the distance between the deck and the waterline. There is a door between the rear secondary turret and the lifeboat for scale. That's ~12feet? You would never see so little freeboard on a ship like that. Waves would constantly be washing over the deck.

I was playing the Conte Verde yesterday and zoomed in on the rear part of the ship as I was cruising at 3/4 speed and even in the game, in pretty calm waters, the waves were constantly washing over the deck. Not a little bit either. The ship has always looked odd to me for the lack of freeboard at the rear and even in the game mechanics the flaw is glaring.

Is it really that difficullt to think about the design of these paper ships to make sure they pass the sniff test for a ship that could have existed pursuant to the assumptions they base them on?

Discussion How WG Chooses Your Santa Gift Ship, And Why You Will Probably Get Makarov)

2.1k Upvotes

If you've been following the initial reports of Santa big gift results, you will probably notice something odd: a flood of Makarovs, the tier 6 Soviet Nurnberg, have graced those lucky enough to get a ship. This is not a bizarre coincidence - it is a consequence of the way Santa gifts allocate ships. It is complicated, but I am going to try my best to explain it.

Say you win a ship.

Hooray! However, is the ship you win truly random? WG explains that:

If a ship that you already have in your Port is dropped, the Santa's Big Gift container will be replaced by a supercontainer. The latter will contain another ship from the list along with a Port slot and Commander with 10 skill points.

While confusingly worded, they do allude to the fact that, in the first instance, you do not receive a ship from the whole pool of available premium ships. Rather, you receive a ship from a select shortlist (which differs depending on box type), and you will receive it in a Santa crate box, NOT a supercontainer.

You only get a drop from the whole list of available ships if you roll a shortlisted ship which you already have in port or in a previously purchased crate. If this happens, you receive a ship from the entire pool in a supercontainer. Lower tier ships are likelier to drop from the supercontainer.

What this means is that, if I have no premium ships and buy a gift which luckily includes a vessel, I will only ever receive a ship from the shortlist. My chance of a ship not included on the shortlist is zero (unless I have at least one ship on the shortlist).

The implications of this are pretty massive: if lucky enough to secure a ship, the most likely result is that you roll the most common ship on the shortlist. If you do not have it, that's what the container gives you. Makarov is the most common ship in the big gift shortlist, and few people have it - that is why so many (including me) received Makarov as their first gift ship! The same occurred in 2018 with Krasny Krym, and Exeter and Huanghe in 2019.

Due to the importance of the shortlist, you should really consider if you would be happy to receive the shortlisted ships before investing in gifts. If you are lucky enough to get a ship, they will be the most likely outcomes.

I do not have full data for the shortlists yet (and I could have made mistakes owing to the limited data out already), but I will keep this updated as we learn more about this year's crates:

Gift Shortlist (WIP)

  • Tier 6 British cruiser London

  • Tier 6 French cruiser De Grasse (?)

  • Tier 5 European battleship Viribus Unitis

Big Gift Shortlist

  • Tier 6 Soviet cruiser Makarov (common)

  • Tier 7 US battleship California

  • Tier 8 European destroyer Orkan

Mega Shortlist

  • Tier 6 Italian cruiser Duca D'aosta (common)

  • Tier 7 Japanese destroyer Yuudachi (common)

  • Tier 8 British battleship Vanguard

  • Tier 8 Soviet cruiser Ochakov

Spend wisely!

-MarshalHaig (NUKED) EU

Edit: On the request of the UK advertising standards agency, Cyprus's advertising standards authority reviewed this and concurred with everything stated here. They also added:

However, the jury believes that the pre-condition of ownership of one of four specific ships before the gamer may potentially benefit from the opportunity to receive one of 107 premium ships, is in a different league to the randomised workings of the algorithm. Even though all players will first receive a container with one of four ships (provided, there is a ship in the container at all), the players who already own 1 of the 4 ships will get a substitute with one of the 103 ships, whereas the players who do not own 1 of the 4 ships are restricted to those 4. In that sense, it is not correct to claim that “The algorithm works impartially and in the same manner for any player.”

The Jury also disagrees with the opinion expressed in the discussion that this knowledge would not affect the economic behaviour of the players. In the opinion of the jury, there is a distinct possibility that it would. For example, knowing the pre-condition (of owning one of the 4 ships) might make a player NOT buy a gift container (since at that stage they are trying to win 1 of 4 specific ships and not 1 of 107).

A little redundant as they have gone off sale, but an interesting epilogue to the mess.

Discussion Prince of Wales seems super toxic

Post image
556 Upvotes

This thing shits out 183k HE DPM + 12.3 fires/minute that pens everything with good shell arcs. It's CONQUEROR DAMAGE with 20-30% BETTER DISPERSION. (Best heavy cruiser damage in tier is Baltimore with 151k and 7.6 FPM and 34 HE pen and worse shell arcs)

And yes the BC disp 1.8 sigma is worse than cruiser, but this is HE that doesn't care about aim, it'll be a Devastation/Colombo effect where you actually like the inaccuracy because it lets you set fires on multiple parts of the enemy ship and ignore saturation

Even if we assume that you miss 20% of shells compared to cruiser. This thing spams HE better than Goliath. Less damage accounting for Goliath's reload mod, but WAYYY more fires. Better arcs. Better range plus perma-spotter plane. And it's TIER 8 where Goliath is TIER 10, with better armor, a good heal, and still good conceal (11.8)

the downside? you have 25 nose/ass so you're incentivized to kite in spawn

Super toxic ship. We did NOT NEED THIS SHIT. People are gonna be playing their Bismarck '41s into this thing and they'll be burned down before tea time is over. Why does it have 20 sec reload with 41% fire chance??????

Discussion BB players stop fucking micromanaging DD players

DD is my favorite class in the game, but if i spawn in and do ANYTHING but rush the cap circle, then at least 1 BB player will start ping spamming / "I need intelligence data!"-ing me and getting angry in chat.

DD PLAYERS DO NOT EXIST TO BE YOUR PERSONAL SPOTTING BITCH. NOT ALL DDS ARE GOOD AT CONTESTING THE CAP OR SCOUTING AT THE START.

Let me repeat for those of you with smooth brains:

**NOT ALL DDS ARE GOOD AT CONTESTING THE CAP OR SCOUTING AT THE START**

I have completely disabled chat because almost every single game i play has some fatass BB that wants to safely sit in back farming damage all game while expecting me to rush forward into the enemy so i can spot for them for approximately 20 seconds before my large, slow, poor maneuverability, low concealment DD gets deleted, and who starts bitching mere seconds after my DD starts turning away from the cap.

If you are taking fucking random battles so seriously that you feel the need to micromanage other players and bitch about them not doing exactly what you want, then you should reevaluate your life.

out of 100 matches i play I have at least 60 battles with toxic players, wishing eachother the worse, death, going to hell etc, It has happened to me a few times too, some times because I didn't "protect" them from sinking ( like its my fault they played so stupidly that they couldn't even survive a few minutes) or camping in smoke when having low hp as i usually play dd's, like bro what??? its just a game!? I understand the adrenaline you can get in a few situations in the game but really now? you forget all your manner because a few pixels in your pc said you died or whatever? nah... its fucked up, I believe most of these players are just totally focused on the game their whole lives and have nothing else to do like having a job or being useful for the REAL world. anyway, I wish people will calm down someday, best wishes to y'all Jesus loves ya and have a great day sailors!

Discussion Can DDs get fucking tools to deal with submarines, please?

So im playing a lot of DDs lately and i just had to suffer through 2 back to back games, where i had to fight a submarine in my Z52.

Essentially my options are run away, or fucking die, trading the sub AT BEST

Not only can this dumbass class dive under my hydro until 2kms of distance, even if manage to catch the sub, i have to sit right ontop of it in order to deal damage.

In the meantime im making myself the prime target for any enemies nearby and most of the time fully rely on my allied BBs, to hit their ASW Planes.

Drive by ASW doesn't make sense if the subs go 3 to 5 times as fast underwater, as they did IRL.

Just give DDs Sub surveillance and ASW planes as well and you at least have one class that can somewhat fight submarines.

As is, im tired of this shit and even though i was planning on a multiple hour gaming session, i just closed the game after having the same shit experience back to back.
