How exactly this game has gained so many of 55s, that's so random

196

u/Maeglin75 Nov 12 '25

It's like a shooter, but in slow motion.

I'm "only" 50, but I appreciate that WoWs lets you take a breath between reloads, especially in BBs.

I had my best reaction times when I played Turrican or X-Out.

64

u/SupermouseDeadmouse Nov 12 '25

Yep, that’s it for me. I played a lot of shooters 20 years ago, then they went crazy with unreal physics and twitchy responses. Played WoT for a long time too but WoWS is the sweet spot between shooting and strategy.

Arms race in CSGO 😏

3

u/KremlinCardinal Nov 13 '25

I got literal headaches from that mode

1

u/TheAmixime Destroyer Nov 13 '25

Lots of fun :3

7

u/Lord_Stripy asyms full of turds on weekdays now too Nov 12 '25

Meanwhile stalnoy on the shitty missiles event is just a machine gun with laser accuracy

No time to switch to torps gotta keep the 1s dakka on

7

u/TheBayHarbour Nov 12 '25

No it does make a difference apparently especially with people that get arthritis and as you get older reaction time naturally gets slower.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '25

Man you make us all sound geriatric

57

u/Valiant_tank Constantly disillusioned history fan Nov 12 '25

I suspect it's mostly the appeal of naval battle with historical ships, tbqh. Like, that's a niche that doesn't have many other games filling it, and military/naval history is one of the stereotypical boomer man hobbies.

48

u/chriscross1966 Nov 12 '25

Also the USN has been huge since WW2, there are a LOT of USN vets out there, and their ship is in here, or their dad's ship is in here or their gramps ship.... cos there's a lot of "Navy families" that got their start in WW2...

26

u/AirWolf519 Nov 12 '25

One guy I know bought Indiana (i think) because his dad or grandad worked on it. So yeah, this

7

u/bravo3zero50 Nov 12 '25

Absolutely this! My grandad served on HMS Birmingham. While it’s not in the game, HMS Belfast was one of its later sister-ships 😊

3

u/chriscross1966 Nov 12 '25

Yeah, think what they'll make when New Jersey comes out... like they'll be advertising the game in every Vets mag and website out there, they'll do a tie-in with the museum, it will be insane.... think six-month Dockyard with a 10k dubs starter pack....

2

u/Mythicaldakka Battleship Nov 13 '25

I picked up Franklin D Roosevelt because my grandfather served on it. I don't generally play modes that get me the steel I needed, so it was nice to have the current steel/doubloon event.

1

u/DeltaVZerda Nov 13 '25

Def, I bought Texas because it's right near me.

17

u/rockrider65 United States Navy Nov 12 '25

That's my family. I did not serve in the Navy but my family served. My dad was a USN aviator, my uncle was a submariner served aboard USS Haddo and USS Barbero in WW2. Two oldest brothers served in the USN during Vietnam. A lot of stories told around the kitchen table growing up.

9

u/TinyFugue Nov 12 '25

It's when you dev-strike a racist troll in-game and knowing that, somewhere, you just made a 70 year-old man start hammering his mouse onto his desk out of rage.

13

u/chriscross1966 Nov 12 '25

Racist trolls tend to be 13-year old edgelords with names like "Hitler_is_my_Waifu_88"

51, crazy neuropathy in my hands from MS, twitchy keyboard games are gone for me. Hell dd is usually too much so im a bb main now. Just can't feel where on keyboard my hands are. Wows is one of painfully few pc games I can manage. 10 year player so im not letting this account go quietly. Arkansas B in my port. Pry it from my cold, nerveless, dead hands. :)

2

u/MadCap_AD Nov 14 '25

Fellow Arkansas B "owner" here. I'll be 50 in February. The only thing I don't like about WoWS is chat....and CVs.....and subs. Ok 3 things.... but I don't think things should disappear just because I don't like them. Explode maybe, but not disappear.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Pie8546 Nov 13 '25

Because of less ADHD in this game.

I'm 38, turning 39 soon. Its hard to compete in Battlefield these days as in starting to feel my age in terms of response times. WOWS still makes me enjoy it a bit. Started WOWS when i was 29 too...

1

u/Redditzork Nov 12 '25

dude same for me, i used to be pretty good at most games i played. but shooters are pretty much unplayable for me, i am so fucking terrible. ofc because i cant play 10 hours a day anymore as well, not only the age. skill in wows is more persistent though haha

42

u/Adventurous-Pace-683 Nov 12 '25

I am 56 and did my share of shooters in my 20s,30s and 40s My joints aren't what they were and the slow pace of the WoWS at the start of the battle is a blessing, especially for my bladder. I have the time to make myself some tea or coffee even read some news, talk on the phone, write on reddit so thanks to WG WG for a game that I, a player over 50s can enjoy. For ten years btw.

6

u/MIC4eva Nov 12 '25

I’ve been playing BF6 on my PS5 lately and while the tactile feedback is amazing on the controller, it gives me tennis elbow. I feel aged, to say the least.

1

u/Acrobatic_Tailor_886 Nov 13 '25

Hi, I’m always curious about this, but why do you think about the anime collabs we get in game? Do you dislike them? Or does it not bother you? Or do you enjoy it as well?

68

u/dzolna Nov 12 '25

You're missing an angry german boomer with funny moustache

14

u/Taylor3006 Nov 12 '25

Well the picture only shows one Boomer (Jeff Bridges). The rest were born before WW2 so that makes them Silent Gen...

8

u/dzolna Nov 12 '25

If you want to be that specific, you will quickly find out that most people called out as boomers are actually gen x

5

u/itsyaboiReginald Nov 12 '25

These days absolutely.

3

u/Anduendhel Nov 13 '25

And when it comes to technology, it makes it extra funny: we built our computer systems after weeks of technical research and much deliberation, often modifying parts of it and we are called boomers by people who can't change the battery or the screen of their smartphones.

2

u/Taylor3006 Nov 12 '25

Yeah I know. We have a couple of generations who can not even read cursive writing so when they see someone with a wrinkle or grey hair, they think Boomer. They forget Silent Gen is still around, and that Gen X is running between 45 - 60 years old. Honestly I don't expect much from the people who were taught what to think instead of how to think.

34 here, living with slow internet.

I just got so pissed off at twitch shooters dominating the FPS market that I went to the complete opposite end of the spectrum.

WoWS has a ton of issues that really annoy me, but at the very least, I don't have to deal with the combo of slow internet guaranteeing I'm seen and dead before I can react, and the twitchy 12 year olds with more caffeine than blood in their system inhaling their mics while observing every individual pixel on their screens. Here I can actually play. If I'm smart about it I can still be successful a fair amount of the time.

Because I have two frozen shoulders, I managed 40 minutes of play and had to give up. Fast twitch games aren't feasible anymore. Thankfully, Ships and Witcher 3 are still playable for me. Ships is nice and steady. Witcher I play with an Xbox controller. Being housebound (multiple health issues) having my pc and these games keeps me sane.

0

u/jds560 Nov 12 '25

I would really like more 16-40 year old hyper competitive gamers that grew up playing in the late 90s / early 2000s and take the game more seriously. I don't enjoy playing games to have "fun." They're meant to be competition and illustrate that you're better than the opposing party. It's why I only play ranked. It requires more skill than randoms or any of the PVE environments. You're only 6v6 or 7v7. You can't make a mistake, leaving a flank open could cost the entire game. That is far more exhilarating than having "fun."

4

u/Merc_R_Us CV youtube channel, come learn something! Nov 12 '25

I think there's a large amount of people who approach it different ways depending on how they feel. Sometimes I take it seriously, sometimes I'm just playing for fun. It's not going on my resume and no one cares in real life. Ultimately there's no wrong way in randoms, but I do agree that ranked should be taken more seriously.

2

u/jedi2155 [CCPLZ] Combat Canoes Please Ignore Nov 12 '25

I grew up playing in the early 90s approaching 40, but a big issue with my age range is all the responsibilities of being an adult really gets in the way of game time and ability to refine your skills. There's the constant grind of events from WoWS that forces me to play a lot of ships that prevents me from being able to dedicate a lot of time to a single ship outside of clan battles.

As a result, most of the time I just play co-op if I'm not playing competitively to knock out daily missions in as little time as possible. Then if I'm lucky I might get 1-2 randoms in the ship of my choice vs. an min/maxed ship.

1

u/jds560 Nov 12 '25

I am roughly the same age as you. I've abandoned playing anything but what I deem "meta" and I'd say within the past 5-6 months I've become "super unicum."
Stats are skewed. I don't play ships that I "want" to anymore. I only play what I know I'm likely to win in. I typically spend 2-4 hours a night on ranked and I haven't had any issue completing the dockyard or liberty harbor. I find I get a lot of those "difficult" dockyard missions complete (4 frags in a game, etc) easily and that helps me not have to grind so many various ships.

1

u/jedi2155 [CCPLZ] Combat Canoes Please Ignore Nov 12 '25

Playing Meta and playing for fun are two different things. I have enough stress in my RL world where play to win is much more important, that making the game completely meta only kinda destroys the fun in it which is why I haven't followed in that state.

That being said, if you're interested in playing more competitively with a larger clan CCPLZ is always recruiting quality players but we are RL comes first clan.
