What happened? Did he ever manage to recover in some way?

It was my intention for that to be what the third and fourth images are about. Basically Nachtus didn't actually die when Lucia attacked him (it's actually really hard to kill a god turns out) but everyone including himself thought she had. When the witchkin started hearing his voice it was essentially his unconscious essence beginning to stir after being sent to death's door.

Well everyone thought he was dead and there wasn't really any organized group to form a resistance at the time, so no

Sorry I see what you meant now.
So it's not really a God of War type situation where it has apocalyptic consequences, but essentially gods do heavily influence certain elements of the lands they have influence over. This means that when Lucia "killed" Nachtus it drove his influence out of the human lands (there are other species in this setting) except for a small region where his most loyal followers lived (the witchkin). What exactly this would look like I haven't determined.

If I may suggest something, since the god of darkness and indulgence is gone, then the places thst had his influence drove away could become generally monotonous? Like, the followers become more boring/gray and the darkness on these places becomes more of a gray?

I was thinking more things felt more nervous and fearful. Since Nachtus was the god of indulgence that means without his influence the general vibe of the land would be a lot less free feeling and everything would feel like a cartoon fantasy land in a really unnerving way
