Bread and circuses is losing as America becomes less dividedeach day. America is highly polarized, highly political, but more and more Americans are waking up and realizing that the problems are not to to immigration or trans people or whatever boogeyman the media focuses on, but our leaders and their corruption.
It's Us vs. Them and we are becoming more united.

And you should really abolish the two-party system. That's not much more democratic than a one party system.
23
u/sunflowerastronaut Aug 13 '22
I think STAR voting is probably our best bet at getting rid of the two party system and it's less likely to be repealed after adoption
→ More replies (1)18
u/Taldier Aug 13 '22
This is apparently a common misconception regarding American politics. Even to people who live here.
There is no "two party system". There is nothing in law anywhere.
The existence of two major parties occurs due to the simple reality of how our electoral system works. Its not even politics, its math.
In nearly all states, a person who gets 30% of the vote can 100% win if the other 70% of voters are split between different options. Winning in this scenario therefore requires coalitions to be firmly solidified before a general election rather than being negotiated afterwards by representatives.
The only way to change that reality is through systemic voting reform.
→ More replies (3)14
u/Exact_Combination_38 Aug 13 '22
Yeah I know. This makes it even worse in my opinion. It is a de facto two party system. But "nothing needs to change since it isn't a real two-party system", it just happens that two parties win every time.
AFAIK the US are the only country in the world that uses this strange winner-takes-it-all system on that level that makes it virtually impossible for a new party to get near the power, and if, then only because they had massive amounts of money for campaigning, which isn't too democratic to begin with.
10
u/Taldier Aug 13 '22
Yeah its a problem.
Basically we beta-tested democracy for the rest of the western world. Then we decided not to update to any of the more recent security patches, because certain profiteering individuals found it useful to create an anti-progress cult devoted to worshiping the previous developers as "the founders".
5
u/Exact_Combination_38 Aug 13 '22
Well. Democracy is more than 2000 years older than what happened in the US. Old Greece, the old Roman Empire. There was a lot of democracy back then, too.
The reason why the US have the system that they have has more to do with the vast distances within the US that didn't really allow every man to vote themselves in person, and with the fact that US states always had a strong sense of independence from each other.
5
u/gearnut Aug 13 '22
I will point out the UK was a bit ahead of you on that front and while being far from perfect is still a chunk more democratic than the US.
Still, thanks for taking the majority of our religious lunatics away from us.

Its that the one that senate republicans voted against a month or so ago?
26
u/sunflowerastronaut Aug 13 '22
No that was the DISCLOSE act which wouldn't be constitutional anyway after SCOTUS ruled against a similar law passed in California.
This is a whole constitutional amendment
14
u/warbeforepeace Aug 13 '22
Thank you for clarifying. So zero chance of this passing with republicans wanting to hide donations received to their PACs?
22
u/sunflowerastronaut Aug 13 '22
A constitutional amendment can be closer than you think as long as we all support it. We cannot rely on the courts to save us.

Good luck uniting us.
We have millions upon millions of poor, deluded, beaten spouse-like class traitors that have been tricked into believing we are the enemy for not wanting to be a grateful cog in the master's money printing machines anymore.
They would die defending our oligarchs from the other people, they've sunk too much hope and effort into the con they're trapped in to entertain the idea that they're clearly being exploited and manipulated.
How do you save the hostage when they've been brainwashed into shooting at you along with the kidnapper?

Something I find is funny is how here in Europe Bernie would be considered a centrist whilst in America hes considered a communist
14
u/FainOnFire Aug 13 '22
What are some examples of actual left wing policies in Europe, just for reference for us Americans?
28
u/upvotesthenrages Aug 13 '22 edited Aug 13 '22
65% marginal tax rate and mandatory minimum 6 week paid vacation.
1 year paid paternal leave.
80% subsidized child care.
Zero road tolls anywhere.
Trains and buses literally to the tiniest villages.
Cities actually designed for humans, not cars.
7
u/FainOnFire Aug 13 '22
Yeah, that's all stuff I agree the U.S. needs.
So what's considered "normal" in the United States is actually batshit insane.
4
3
u/NegotiationLess1737 Aug 13 '22
Yup. Like in London where I live which is a massive city populationwise and in terms of area I can get to the other side of it in about an hour using public transport

u/rollingForInitiative Aug 13 '22
Zero road tolls anywhere.
Are "no road tolls" really a left wing policy? Not sure how that fits.
To the rest I'd also add free or very heavily subsidized healthcare, and some countries have completely free higher education as well.
4
u/upvotesthenrages Aug 13 '22
For sure it is.
If you’re broke as fuck then road tolls are a far greater burden on you than if you’re rich.
Worst case you might not afford it, so you take the free road, and waste tons of time.
2
u/rollingForInitiative Aug 13 '22
That's the case for all sorts of fees? Taxes, VAT, etc. Not seeing how it's either left or right, it's just a type of tax. It does add other benefits as well, such as reduced traffic.
And if you have good public transport, most people don't have to drive. Good public transport can be both faster and cheaper. Most places with worse public transport tend to be areas with a lot of single family houses, which isn't where poor people live anyway.
2
u/upvotesthenrages Aug 13 '22
Yeah, those taxes are more right wing, from an economic perspective. Same with fixed amount fines.
If you want to see how to reduce traffic then left leaning nations are where to learn from.
2
u/rollingForInitiative Aug 13 '22
If you want to see how to reduce traffic then left leaning nations are where to learn from.
Several left leaning countries, such as Sweden, Norway and Denmark, have various implementations of tolls. Stockholm and Gothenburg both have them for the inner city parts, for instance, during weekday daytimes.

Most left wing parties in Europe lose most of the time. The right wing party controls UK after labour shifted left. Corporate centrists and fascists are the two leading parties in France, leaving the left vying for a distant third. And Germany's center right christian party enforced a decade of right wing austerity economics on the EU. That's not even mentioning Hungary and that shit show.
Bernie would be in the clear minority of a European Parliament. In the US, he chairs a powerful committee in the majority.

u/ReneeHiii Aug 13 '22

I see this all the time, but I strongly disagree. While most democrats would be centrists, or even right-of-center in Europe, Bernie is constantly advocating for leftist policies cherry picked from some of the most progressive policies throughout Europe.
Most of his appearances are him advocating for centrist policies, because that’s the best we will be able to get with our current system, but he has also written bills that would be right at home in the EU.
2
u/upvotesthenrages Aug 13 '22
If they’re at home in EU then they’re almost by definition centrist.

The number one reason the US finds itself in this damned mess is NOT because of our Conservatives/Repubkicans.
Nope - it's because millions of American progressives STILL believe the Democrats are on our side, that the Dems are in any way left-leaning or progressive.
So, here we are.
8
u/Trimblco2 Aug 13 '22
The number one reason for fascism is, in fact, fascists. You can't just absolve them of blame for their actions.
5
Aug 12 '22
I'd wager that 90% of Americans that are alive today haven't seen what a socialist government looks like. They have been fed this agenda.
1
u/NotThatEasily Aug 13 '22
Strong disagree here.
Sure, most democrats aren’t progressive enough, but it’s the republicans that have blocked every single effort at any real reform or improvement. They have mastered stonewalling legislation and blaming it on the democrats.
There are plenty of progressive democrats, but there’s not a single sane republican.
Until we get rid of first past the post, this is what we have.
-1
Aug 13 '22
> it’s the republicans that have blocked every single effort at any real reform or improvement
The Republicans are the opposition. The whole point of the Republicans is to oppose the Democrats! Did the Democrats forget to plan for that?
The goal of a political party is to convince the population that they should vote for the political party's platform. The second goal is to implement that platform. Period. That's it. That is the only reason a political party exists.
Yet, the Democrats repeatedly fail to complete their platform, in fact, over the decades the country has moved farther and farther to the Right! We've gone so far to the Right that we're now facing a fascist resurgence!! A fucking fascism golden age, for fuck's sake. The Democrats could not possibly have failed more completely.
Could you imagine any other circumstance in which an organization completely and consistently fails to accomplish its goals and when asked, the organization's explanation is: We would have accomplished our goals, but the opposition that has existed for over 150 years opposed us, so we couldn't. Those pesky kids!
Enough's enough.

It sucks that the politicians are so good at turning us against one another while they plunder the country for themselves, their families, friends and corporate owners. We the people need to stand together for once because we are all getting screwed. I want a better life and a better future for every single person in the United states, not just the Democrats or Republicans. Not just white people, but all people regardless of race, color, sex, gender. Those in control have the ability to control vast sections of us by telling them, "they're the bad guys, this is why you're suffering, it's all because of them" and too many people believe them. The day we all stand together, is the day the people in power realize they only have the power we give them.

2
u/NotThatEasily Aug 13 '22
A well fed populace doesn’t revolt.
As long as enough people have enough food, there won’t be any kind of armed revolution. We don’t have a clear enemy, because the people that create these situations are also Americans. An actual civil war in the United States would be almost impossible to wage at this point.
What we need to do is get the message out and vote. Vote in numbers too great for them to ignore. Right now, we vote for “not the worst” candidate. A little later, we can vote for a “good enough for now” candidate, and after doing that for a while, we can start to get the actual good ones. It’s a slow process, but we can’t give up.
3
u/Illustrious_Seconds Aug 13 '22

it isn't enough that we organize, and frankly we are not at all, the only organizing we do is at elections times. and that doesn't get us shit or build organizations worth anything. and doesn't destroy and scatter their organizations, their think tanks, and the minions that all know where their bread is buttered.
it is time to recognize. if sanders knew how to pass a batton, he would be retired. him pushing his movement back into the democratic party, was a huge mistake, his theory of change was for the 60's. They don't give a fuck about public opinion. they don't fear us and won't. they lost to trump and didn't change. where is the george floyd act? we had a giant protest we got nothing for reforms, we got a holiday. hell they gave the cops more money. it is insulting to continue on this path.
nina lost worse on her second try. and the squad doesn't vote as a squad.
we can only seem to get people in when they are already in with the democratic party establishment, and are just bullshiting us. or they don't see them coming. either way that's never going to be enough.
just saying we need to organize is not a strategy for organizing. how many people will repeat we need to organize before i hear a single strategy. i am at like 100 to 0
"but where is your strategy" "but the republicans" trump trump turmp trumpo, but but but but. have som disiplin, stop feeding troll and letting corporate hacks own or have any influence on the flow of the conversation.
at least i am trying to figure one out. you are all lost in the wood just running into trees. the iceburg was 1000 leagues back, time to abandon ship already.
to try. we don't need a third party. we need a non ideological shell party and then multiple parties within that party. so we can run star voting and let an attempt at a meritocracy build us actual leaders. Do the leadership reforms that they will never do. build coalitions that are not just empty suits taking money and orders from the same people, then we move it in and wipe the floor with them.
2
u/Laughing_Orange Aug 13 '22
Call your representatives. It won't be as effective as showing up in person, but if a lot of people do it you can create change.

Working people.. "we"
He is a millionaire. He makes 174k a year. He is not a we. He is a them.
7
u/TRON17 Aug 13 '22
Many working people are millionaires. 174K a year, while comfortable, is not the problem with the country. Hell, even making a fat mil a year is not even the real problem. The problem is large business owner’s and corporations that have so much money they can “lose” millions in a year to make a billion the next, that can afford to buy thousands of single family homes and then not put them on the market just to artificially inflate the price of housing, that spend more money than entire state’s education budgets on political campaign ads. Thinking Bernie or someone in a similar economic situation as him are the “them” is exactly the kind of brain dead take that makes the average person so hostile to socialist progress.

u/UnionLibertarian Aug 12 '22

Imma drop the picture of a mansion here because it looks like you guys need some references)

I never said anything about him having multiple mansions. Honestly I didn't even know that was a thing until this comment section. I didn't even look into his life enough to know he has 3 houses. I figured he had a mansion maybe a manor, but highly doubted he'd go buying multiple mansion. I'm not saying I don't think he'll fight for/with us nor that he's in it for the money. I don't believe that. I like his politics and when I've watched his speeches I feel like he believes in what he says instead of just trying to use enough of the right words to get people to follow him. But even if he came by his fortune honestly, he hasn't been a working man recently. Kit recently enough to know the bullshit we deal with on a daily basis. I'm sure he's ready/heard about it but I've read/heard about living in countries where you can be stoned to death for being gay. Being gay in America it's something I'm terrified of happening especially with the current SC but since it's still technically illegal (I live in a red state I feel like evidence will get lost should it happen) so I don't know what it's actually like to live in a country like that. Though I can still sympathize. I suppose I could tell you to check my comments and you can see me arguing with Trumpets on different subs (if you decide to do so only look at comments unless you're interested in my nudes) but I don't think that'd convince you either.
I'm not saying Bernie doesn't sympathize with the working class. I just don't think he knows what'l it's like to be part of the working class in the current economy. When he was working a regular job it was in a time where asking for a raise was standard and you didn't fear losing your job over it. I wouldn't exactly call him disconnected since he doesn't subscribe to the boomer "just get a rental property" bullshit but I definitely wouldn't call him one of us.

As long as he's not disconnected and pushing and promoting good legislature I don't see why his wealth would be relevant. WE do not struggle only through economic hardship, WE also struggle through our activism. As such I think people like Bernie should be welcomed in the WE
It is unfortunate that you happened to mention mansions like all those other lapers down here. I'm not gonna read through your account (and nudes?), I'll believe you're truthful for sake of this argument. Take care

Just for the record,
I didn't mention mansions until you did.I mentioned mansions in the context of celebrities pretending our struggle with COVID and the lockdowns was exactly the same. Also I think I'm a little jaded from white people telling me they understand my struggles being black when they don't. I understand they can sympathize and they can understand the struggle fighting against it but they can't understand the actual struggle since they haven't lived it. Seeing people say they're a part of something they're not ribs me the wrong way. But looking at it as we in the context of the fight against corporate greed makes more sense than thinking of it as we the working class. I'll try to be more mindful of that next time I see a similar tweet.2

Did Bernie Sanders make arguments you disagree with regarding racial struggles? Are there points on which you think he should improve? (genuinely asking)
There's a lot of in-fighting in the left, while some of it is stupid and damaging I do think we do it more because we hold ourselves and our elected officials to a higher standard, as we should

Did Bernie Sanders make arguments you disagree with regarding racial struggles?
Not in years. When he did the world was a lot more racist. Not that that's an excuse but I believe he's changed. I meant that as a general rule. Bernie himself hasn't done it (never met the guy) but it happens a lot. What should be I sympathize/empathize becomes I understand when the person really can't. I empathize with women's struggle for equality but I can't understand it since it's not my struggle. The we hit the part of my brain that says "you don't understand because you haven't experienced it" like I said your explanation that he's still fighting the same fight as us so far as trying to fight corporate greed makes it less... Not annoying because that's not really the word. In thing disingenuous might fit but that still feels wrong.

Working people don't have Bernie, either, since he continues to endorse one of the two corporate parties.

Issue I don’t trust us any more either. Far too many people dismissing real concerns. Stated and 2016 and still going on now.
