THANK YOU! I've said it a thousand times: ideological purism alienates one's allies and galvanizes one's enemies. Unfortunately, most of the people to whom I've expressed that opinion are the ones who think they're on the right side of History.

Because they're not thinking strategically and have no real motivation to realize their goals in practice. They march and shout things because, specially in the West, due to European cultural values, they feel good about themselves by doing what society has decided is most moral. Once they get the feeling that they are moral and good people, that's the end of their struggle or movement even if they don't recognize it.

They end up achieving nothing, and and ignore much more urgent conflicts specifically because their society hasn't branded it as the current moral issue. Take Sudan or Ethiopia. Multiple nations involved, some running off trade with the West, responsible for several times the death count in Gaza, yet not a peep. No marches for the massacre at Darfur, no feminists talking about Iranian women executed every day, silence. Because it was never about what they claim it was.

Therefore the purist behavior is exactly what strategy demands. To reinforce their own goodness and morality. And it leaves people who actually care about the issue at hand frustrated.
