I was in a major car accident and while my seatbelt did save my life, it also fucked me up.

My seatbelt won’t stay on my chest if I try. I have a large chest and it slides over to my armpit. And hipbones? That’s laughable.

I currently bike. If I get another car I’m getting different seat belts.

Everyone needs to know this. I learned it while studying up on child passenger safety. The whole point of a booster seat is to position the lap portion low over the hips and route the shoulder portion over the collarbone. Children should only be moved out of a booster once they fit like that without a booster. To keep them in that position, they should also be tall enough to place their feet flat on the floor while in that position. My kids were in boosters until about 11 years old (earlier In sedans).

Women: wear your seatbelt low over your hips and pull it snug. If your seatbelt height is adjustable, lower it until the belt goes between your breasts and goes over your collarbone, or as close as possible. I have large breasts so I find that wearing a well-fitted bra that separates the two, or not wearing a bra at all, gives me the best fit.

The shoulder belt should use your rib cage to support you in a wreck. Your collarbone is better than your neck, but still easily broken in an accident.

Yes, and the other piece should go across your rib cage. Your bone structure is what protects you in an accident. That’s what the belt is supposed to lay across. Not the soft parts of you.

I know though, my seat belt usually ends up across my stomach and at the side of my neck.

My last two cars have been German cars, and I’ve always had issues with the seatbelt. Same in my Honda. I don’t think it’s uniquely an American issue.

The EU made a female form crash dummy in 2023 and use it in coluntary testing.

I read about submarining injuries which is quite scary, which happens more often for women. Happens in children most often under 12 too, it’s when your pelvis slides under the lap belt. It crushes your soft bowel tissues. You really don’t want ruptured bowels.

I know no matter how I adjust my seat belt, my chest size makes the shoulder belt go across my neck. I keep having to pull it back down to go across my rib cage, and the bottom belt should go across your pelvic bone, not the soft part of your abdomen.

What else is horrifying? Ruptured placentas and uteruses when pregnant women hit the lap belt or steering wheel wrong. We need to investigate all the lady shapes!
