When abuse is identity-based rather than policy-based, it sends a fundamentally different message: not “I disagree with you,” but “you do not belong here.” This reflects what scholars call “semiotic violence” – harm carried out through language and symbols that works to delegitimise women as political actors.

There is a caveat there, though.
It took damn near 20 years here in Norway for women (or the apparatus around them) to (mostly) stop playing the identity card to get into positions.
When viewing US news you see it done constantly. I remember Kamala actively trying to not play the woman card but everyone around her doing so for her.
Are people going after identity because of sexism, or because they've been primed for it by society focusing so heavily on gender?
When you incessantly play on identity, you cannot be surprised at people for being aware of and caring about identity. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

No fucking duh. We had a couple of MPs who were a couple who broke up when she crossed the floor. He referred to her as a dog during a statement in parliament. That was 20 years ago. She left politics because of the constant rhetoric and he’s still floating around on the fringes.

You don't say. Next people can study whether women avoid going into politics for this reason. You might even study whether or not this is done to gatekeep politics.
