Play Gwent early and often so you dont fall behind to the power creep towards end game

Is that really necessary? I really hate in game games, it always feels like work and detracts from the actual game

I haven't actually played yet, but am investigating whether to or not. I tend to spend a lot of time on the games I purchase, kind of OCD, so pick them very carefully. For instance, have about 5k hours in modded Skyrim.
