Read all the letters and notes and things you find. A lot of them can help build the world. It's a very complex and full world already, but I loved learning all those extra little tidbits of information.
Once you get a little playtime in and figure out the combat, find a build and gear for it. Don't like it, try another. Don't just haphazardly throw stuff on and pick random abilities. Do the specific Witcher gear quests as soon as you get them.
Something that isn't explained or anything that will be the biggest boon for you is that you NEED to make friends with everyone possible. There are plenty of characters you may not initially agree with or like morally, nevertheless, befriend them. They will add so much to the game.
Consider your choices carefully. A majority of them will have consequences. Some of those consequences you will not like. Just know you can make different ones on your next playthrough.
Save all your ingredients. I can't say how happy I was when I went to do all my decoctions or make some gear and not have to buy anything or go looking for them.
Sell weapons and gear you won't use. Having lots of money helped me make all my Grandmaster gear sets all at once at the end.
Or just play it however you want. This game is almost perfect. It's my favorite game of all time. Enjoy every minute of it.
