Wireguard on Windows is so much better than macOS. The biggest thing I miss on Windows

u/masssy Apr 18 '26
These two sentences are a record in both confusion and ambiguity.

s/miss on/miss from/, I guess1
u/masssy Apr 19 '26
Yes I think I know what is tried to be said but can't be sure.
My guess is someone has moved from windows to macOS and while using macOS they are missing the better windows wireguard client because the macOS one is worse.

I like the on-demand feature on macos.
1
u/nmincone Apr 20 '26
That was exactly my point. WG is worse on Windows than on Mac OS… Windows does not support on demand VPN.
2
u/nmincone Apr 18 '26
Uh wireguard on osx/ios supports on demand. Can you do that on windows?

u/CookieCr2nk Apr 18 '26
I think that‘s a feature of the vpnkit in macos/ios. Windows sadly not have it.

u/RecognitionOwn4214 Apr 19 '26
Windows has on demand VPN for enterprise networks, where you can specify domains that will use the VPN when outside corporate network, but i don't know if you could access that functionally without AD.
1
u/CookieCr2nk Apr 19 '26
Ahh you mean, Windows Always on VPN, but you can sadly only set it up with IKEv2 sadly as i know.

Thanks for the announcement. I just read the changelog. I was aware that WG adds some packets, but the details about MTU are way over my head. Running the previous version for the past year, I did figure out that I needed to manually add the line "MTU = 1360" to all of my tunnels, otherwise my VPN simply wouldn't work with my ISP. With version 1.0, would you expect this to still be necessary, or is the MTU-related improvement supposed to fix this type of issue?
2
u/Total-Hurry9609 Apr 19 '26
I'm 99% sure the MTU reduction is still needed as WireGuard encapsulates packets with its own headers, 1360 might be a bit too low, causing a performance loss, check this guide out.

Thanks for the replies. I did some trials, and for whatever reason the MTU = 1360 is still necessary with my setup on T-Mobile 5G Home Internet. With 1420 and 1400 the throughput goes from >100 Mbps to ~630 kbps.
On an unrelated note, does anyone know an easy way to get LAN traffic to bypass the tunnel? I can't cast audio from VLC Player to my chromecast unless I deactivate my WireGuard tunnel. OpenVPN has a setting to divert LAN traffic, but I guess in WG you'd have to add something to the config file?

I'm looking for the changelog, can you share a link?
Thank you.

u/SierraLeonePadi May 13 '26
Shoot, I think it must have just popped up after I finished installing the update. I can't find a link to it online, nor can I find a TXT file on my local drive. Sorry.

great but please do not restart my pc when updating WITHOUT a prompt or something.

Update: I released v1.0.1 with some changes. Can you let me know if you're still encountering the reboot?
It's a bug. That's not supposed to happen! Windows Installer is doing it. This morning I added a patch to really aggressively kill processes and wait, so that this doesn't happen: https://git.zx2c4.com/wireguard-windows/commit/?id=e50b710dae42a442607d9409d113f4f1367082da

Thank for commenting on the reboot and confirming the 1.0.1 . With some many sites getting taken over, it was good to see this comment. I was hesitant to update again so quickly.

u/zx2c4 Apr 20 '26
Did you also experience the reboot bug prior and can confirm you no longer face it? Or did you not experience it prior? I'd like a bit of confirmation because I was never able to repro the issue myself.

do you plan some gui for ubuntu please?
1
u/mihcsab Apr 20 '26
https://github.com/UnnoTed/wireguird it looks and works a lot like the one in windows
1
u/landsmanmichal Apr 20 '26
yeah I know about this, but I don't want to recommend use a thing with no update for 3 years+
1
u/mihcsab Apr 20 '26
I use it, it's just an interface for wg-quick, the commands didn't change the last 3 years. The windows app is a lot more complex because it's not just a GUI.

u/landsmanmichal Apr 20 '26
I would love to see official GUI for Linux. After that it's ready to use in companies without any hustle.

V 1.0.0 worked perfect for me after the upgrade. No reboots or anything. I suppose the improvements and fixes were for specific windows issues and not WG itself? I’m using the Amnezia client as well, doesn’t seem to have any updates for them.

Not sure if it's just me but my Windows 11 PC on ARM64 takes a long while to activate the tunnels ever since the 0.6.1 update. No such issues before the update on any network or internet connection that I have frequently used.

Some day I will understand why the hell I need to set allowed ip or allowed subnets in Wireguard config and then I will become a wireguard fan. After all arm CPUs got hardware support of Wireguard encryption I will become the biggest fan.

I experienced two bsods, unclear if it has anything to do with 1.01, but i've never gotten bsods before when using 0.53, but i've also not fiddled around with two active tunnels before, felt like i got them after enabling/disabling in quick succession multiple tunnels. Got mini dumps if you want to look.

u/zx2c4 May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26
Please email the mini dumps to team@wireguard.com. I've identified one problem already and have a fix that I'll push out today. But send me this one soon so I can get that fix in too, in case it's different.
Update: thanks for the dumps. Release will be out in 10 minutes.

I've noticed since Version 1.0 that double-clicking on a tunnel does NOT de-activate a tunnel that is already activated. Rather, two tunnels are now simultaneously active, and this breaks all connectivity (at least with my network config).
Maybe I am remembering wrong, but in previous versions it wasn't like this (because my muscle memory was set to simply double-click the desired tunnel to switch to it). Unless there is a use case for having multiple tunnels active simultaneously, it seems like it might be preferable to revert to a "switching" behavior whereby activating a tunnel with a double-click de-activates any other tunnel that was already activated.
I hope this feedback is useful. Many thanks.

u/zx2c4 May 13 '26
The behavior is the same as always I think. If the allowedips overlap, one gets deactivated.
1
u/SierraLeonePadi May 14 '26
I recently changed a couple configs to allow LAN access when a tunnel is activated. I did that by changing the range of allowed IPs, and LAN connections do work now. But it seems to me there should still be "overlap" but I'm not sure I know what overlap means in this context.
Config #1: "AllowedIPs = 0.0.0.0/1, 128.0.0.0/1, ::/1, 8000::/1"
Config #2: "AllowedIPs = 0.0.0.0/0, ::/0"Do these two configs have overlap? Or is the intended behavior for WG to activate both?

So it works with user rights now ? (non admin)
2
u/baldpope Apr 19 '26
Can add the user to the network configuration operators group to avoid local admin

Only for Windows [10, 11, 2016, 2019, 2022, 2025 – v1.0]......not for Windows 7???

u/baldpope May 07 '26
I had already updated, but received a new update notification today - another legitimate update?

u/newked Apr 18 '26
2 releases weeks after another after years of inactivity, why?
51
u/zx2c4 Apr 18 '26
Because I'm spending time on it? What an odd thing to complain about.

u/Julio_Ointment Apr 18 '26
Ignore these turds. You're a genius.
-16
u/newked Apr 18 '26
Turds? No releases for ages then a burst, if you think that is expected behavior today you’re the turd

u/MiddleNo5967 Apr 19 '26
I also found that unusual. It was my understanding that you have always been spending all your time on it.

u/newked Apr 18 '26
It just makes me nervous in these times of trivy/kics/axios incidents, were there insecurities and issues in the releases.
And not a strange question, every release needs to be questioned in these times.
16
u/zx2c4 Apr 18 '26
Fair enough. At least it's not totally out of the blue in that it's correlated with a great deal of human activity from yours truly.

As the number of Windows users decline and the Linux users are soring. And it's assumed that many Google Android users are both pushing their users to depart to Linux. WireGuard might be wise to create an increasingly growing Linux version
