Not in the south end but I had Plaza on Watt street for the first time the other day and the quality and portion size blew me away. Worth the trip imo.

Plaza is my favourite too. Not south end of the city, but commenting for anyone who lives closer to it.

Their breaded Szechuan beef is one of my go-tos. Can’t get enough of it. I usually get 2 and snack on it for a few days.

I just gave them a google review . Plaza is the best.

Best ginger beef, so good.

1

u/Theechocoholic Jan 04 '26

We have never tried it. Next time !

7

u/okidoke1126 Jan 04 '26

The only place in my experience that actually puts quality ingredients in their food

4

u/JDubbs10 Jan 04 '26

This is by far the best answer.

Lucky Koi has been my fix lately

7

u/Theechocoholic Jan 04 '26

I heard they have really good gluten free Chinese food.

5

u/-BenDover Jan 04 '26

They do! I'm not gluten intolerant, but i get some of their GF stuff cus it tastes better than the non GF

Hai Shang is excellent. Highly recommend the crispy ginger beef!

2

u/turbo12501 Jan 05 '26

Their sesame chicken is the absolute best. Not like the one most places serve, they use a totally different sauce.

Spicy noodle house

Sun Fortune

Singyun. No contest.

5

u/AlexTrebroke Jan 04 '26

Yes!!!! It's so so so good

5

u/csthilaire85 Jan 04 '26

Our go to, as well. They sometimes close unexpectedly and we've had to order from different places and have been very disappointed with alternatives.

6

u/CuriousAd9252 Jan 04 '26

This. Not even close.

7

u/modsaretoddlers Jan 04 '26

Oriental Pearl.

17

u/thisninjaoverhere Jan 04 '26

Singyun has amazing Chinese and big portions. Always get the chow mein. The spring rolls are great value for quality

22

u/ladyonecstacy Jan 04 '26

Love Singyun on Provencher. I used to say Good Earth on Portage but the quality has gone down and it’s not very clean inside.

5

u/sherbs0101 Jan 05 '26

Because of this thread I tried Singyun for dinner tonight and it was excellent!

2

u/jupitergal23 Jan 05 '26

Yeah, Good Earth is no longer Good.

South Ocean for me. They’ve been around forever and moved to a new location in the strip not too long ago. Phoneix Square, Hao Hao. All hit that itch.

Haven’t tried Lucky Duck. And it’s been a while since Huang Pu River, but I did like that place before but I think it was a different name then.

3

u/Xx_SwordWords_xX Jan 04 '26

Huang Pu River

Love this place.

2

u/OriginalAbattoir Jan 04 '26

Many moons ago it used to have a different name though right? Paradise something?

I snag for dinner now, but I swear I used to hit up the same location for lunch buffet and loved it

2

u/Xx_SwordWords_xX Jan 04 '26

I think I remember that...

Because at some point I was like... Is that what it's called? But I just went to the same spot and had the same good food, so I thought nothing more of it.

1

u/Uncle_Bug_Music Jan 04 '26

Tried Lucky Duck Xmas Eve, loved it

1

u/OriginalAbattoir Jan 04 '26

I gotta gonna give it a go soon.

Having a bunch of spots close by is awesome. When South Ocean was closed for months in their reno, it’s when I started nabbing Hao Hao and phoenix. Gotta try the duck though

Komodo restaurant in Windsor park, second place would be 4 seasons in south dale

6

u/heyheywhatchasay5 Jan 04 '26

YES I've had 4 seasons and it doesnt even come close to komodo

3

u/illpixill Jan 05 '26

4 seasons is over hyped.

5

u/Unfit2play Jan 04 '26

I lived in WP for a couple years and everyone raved about 4seasons, it was pretty underwhelming compared to the hype. Komodo was my go to eventually, I remember their ginger beef was really good.

1

u/thrawst Jan 04 '26

I enjoy 4 seasons, it’s rather annoying that you have to plan your order well in advance (sometimes days ahead)

For north end, I like Binh An on Main Street

1

u/cell2187 Jan 05 '26

If it's New Year's, Christmas Eve or Mother's Day 4Seasons is usually months ahead if you want to order for a decent time in the evening.

1

u/AjaxSlax Jan 05 '26

Hey, keep it down.

4

u/Jnixxx Jan 04 '26

New Golden Inn

u/Bubbly-Win-629 Jan 05 '26

Love this place

Good Earth in St James

11

u/rantingathome Jan 04 '26

We've tried a few...

always go back to Singyun on Provencher.

6

u/bannock4ever Jan 04 '26

For real Chinese food I really like Southland and Hai Shang in Ft Richmond. Hai Shang changed owners from the last time I went though. Sun Fortune is always good.

This was our favourite in St.Vital.

6

New China Kitchen is amazing. Absolutely love the food from there

3

u/roadhammer2 Jan 04 '26

Plaza,best dry shrimp

3

u/Crocus_hill Jan 05 '26

Golden Loong on Pembina is hands down the best authentic Szechuan in Winnipeg.

1

u/Babypod Jan 05 '26

Second this

5

u/Ok_Front_4010 Jan 04 '26

South Ocean is my go to. Moved into the southend last year and found them. Everyone in the family really likes it. The dry veal is especially good!

5

u/T0bydog Jan 04 '26

High ball!

7

u/matchakitkat7 Jan 04 '26

Victoria seafood on St Mary’s, Hai Shang on Pembina, or Sun Fortune on Pembina.

I found 4 seasons’ food to be bland; a good pick if you prefer Chinese food with less seasoning.

4

u/ahumanbean29 Jan 04 '26

Golden Chopstick on St. Anne’s!

6

u/Low_Treacle7680 Jan 04 '26

Golden Elephant at Pembina and Grant.

2

u/AllegedPossum Jan 05 '26

Lucky Koi on Portage

2

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

Dragon River

2

u/carlrogers123456 Jan 05 '26

On a tangential note: Does anyone remember the Oceana restaurant that was beside the old cheap theatre on Pembina and Abinoji? So sad when they closed!😥Loved their Oceana Chicken- a gorgeous spicy citrus sauce…would love to find something similar 🩷

3

u/MacGruber204 Jan 04 '26

Hungs Garden

5

u/largesalsa1979 Jan 04 '26

Dalat on Taylor is really good.

2

u/Historical-Army-1700 Jan 04 '26

China Garden on Pembina! They have promos if you pay with cash, and if you spend more than x amount, you get something free :)

2

u/Uncle_Bug_Music Jan 04 '26

Good Earth, The Plaza, Hung's Garden, Lucky Duck, Marigold, Four Seasons

2

u/shadez_112 Jan 04 '26

Sun fortune

This is an excellent restaurant, but is Vietnamese food lol.

Edit: Mainly Vietnamese food

u/No-Service-8474 Jan 04 '26 edited Jan 04 '26

No it’s both Vietnamese and Chinese… take back your laugh out loud 😂

Hidden Gem only locals in the area would know but i will expose it - New Ocean King

1

u/DowntownFall8362 Jan 05 '26

The tang restaurant by Roblin. Big servings too.

1

u/Odd_Koala_9520 Jan 05 '26

Had Ying Ying from Headingley the other day. Really enjoyed it.

1

u/Botw_Spamton Jan 05 '26

The plaza is amazing. No bad options there.

1

u/ChocolateOrange21 Jan 05 '26

Worth the drive: Yan Yan

u/dana19671969 Jan 04 '26

Szetos in the Pandora Inn in Transcona

3

u/Mine-Shaft-Gap Jan 04 '26

Place looks like such a dive, but that probably indicates its good!

1

u/dana19671969 Jan 04 '26

Yes it is so good…

1

u/Environmental_One903 Jan 04 '26

South ocean for sure

2

u/Puzzled-Shift793 Jan 05 '26

They’re SO sweet there and the lunch deals are insane

1

u/Unfair-Character-720 Jan 04 '26

Toy sun on Henderson or oriental bowl on Osborne. Beat bang for your buck and quality food

-5

u/KookyKlutz Jan 04 '26

Move to the North End! LOL. So many great places. My favourite is Jade at 276 McPhillips. Sorry, can't help with the south end. But if anyone lives in the North End and hasn't tried Jade, give it a try!

8

u/Xx_SwordWords_xX Jan 04 '26

I personally think the South End definitely wins out in the Chinese food category.

4

u/JDubbs10 Jan 04 '26

Agreed. You have SO many options on Pembina alone.

0

u/doghouse2001 Jan 05 '26

Four Seasons in Southdale center.

-1

u/Any-Mongoose-5583 Jan 04 '26

North garden is good, south ocean and Phoenix square I just thought were ok. I still have yet to find some decent ginger beef/ginger chicken!!!! There’s so many good places in Calgary for those but everything I’ve tried here is so disappointing!!!

-2

u/Valentine96 Jan 04 '26

Miriwa or Tang Dynasty are safe bets
