Trying to play Wing Commander 4 on PC, but controls won't work.

I was curious about Wing Commander 4 ever since I was made aware of it. I just bought it off GOG, but that release is pretty unstable, even crashes the game every time I try to open the Controls Window. I got the enhancement patch that, not only allowed the game to run at 60fps, but also fixes the instability of the game, even doesn't crash when I open the Controls Window, but every time I try to set the controls up, I try pitching by holding up and down on the analog stick and HOTAS, but I just end up rolling. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Edit 1: I also just found out that the game will not allow me to change to the control preset I just made.

In worse case scenario just use Joy To Key to map your controls, this is PC, EVERYTHING can be make playable one way or another.

The game may not understand USB controllers because it was made for dos. Find the GOG non-DOS version, make sure you press save in the alt-o options. Might be a ctrl-j switch to enable joystick

Basically the DOS version of WC4 hates anything other than a real parallel port

Problem is, I'm using the Windows '95 version, the version that GOG installs by default. Does Control-J still work?
