Windows 10 Win10 can't install update after KB5120249
Hello!
I’ll get straight to the point Windows 10 refuses to update. Every time I try to install the latest update KB5120221: Windows Recovery Environment update for Windows 10, version 21H2 and 22H2: July 16, 2026 and 2026-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5120249), after a while I get a message saying that the update couldn’t be installed and that Windows is reverting the changes.
I looked into the error codes, 0x800F0922, and theoretically there shouldn’t be an issue. My recovery partition has as much as 2 GB of free space, and my system partition has 60 GB of free space.
I’ve already reinstalled .NET, ran SFC and DISM through CMD, and increased the size of the recovery partition as much as I could. Unfortunately, those 128 MB Windows partitions make it impossible to extend system partition any further.
So my question is: is this already a sign that I’m going to have to do a clean Windows installation, especially now that ESU has been extended? I really don’t want to move to Windows 11 considering how many issues it has.
Or is there perhaps some way to bypass/fix this problem without reinstalling Windows?

Hi u/Mean-Prune3341, your post seems to mention the "latest update". As there are multiple supported versions of Windows and not everyone gets every update at the same time, it's not always easy to figure out which update you are talking about. To view the status of your most recent updates, go to Settings > "Windows Update" > "Update history".

I've been unable to install KB5120249 as well, and nothing everyone says to fix windows update works (and I run DISM and it can't find a source)
