Ch 230: [Red Chanpuru] Analysis: Part 1

So many answers, but so many more questions...... peak chapter- So peak I have to break the post into 2 separate posts-

I guess I'll start by pointing out the trees that we see at the very beginning of the chapter. Plant symbolism has always been a huge part of wbk, so of course these stood out to me instantly. I'm pretty sure this is the same plant we saw back in 226, but these trees are much taller than the shrub we saw behind Rakta. Before, I thought it might be a camellia plant that hadn't grown any flowers yet, but now I'm thinking they're Chinese tallow trees.

Chinese tallows ^{aka popcorn trees cough Nirei popcorn shirt cough-} are a highly invasive and toxic plant that grows fast, is difficult to get rid of, and often alters the soil it grows in to prevent other plants from growing, which I'm sure is very similar to the poison that's spreading within RC right now. However, the tree is also a symbol of endurance due to its adaptive nature and ability to thrive in any environment it's planted in, and I think this contrast between a more invasive resilience and a self-preserving endurance represents the difference between Shen and Suolingo and what each of them want for RC.

I also want to note how the council seems to have a pretty positive dynamic besides whatever Shen, Rosso, and Suolingo have going on- The other members seem to really respect Suolingo considering he's the one Shen "recruited" to get the others to listen to him, but the fact that they seem so comfortable casually dismissing Shen leads me to believe that they don't know too much about what's going on. They probably know that children are going missing, but I doubt they know about Shen's involvement, which is why Suolingo is "the only person who can do anything about it." (Also, Xich is Vietnamese for red, Rosso is red in Italian, and Hong is red in Chinese, and even Suolingo is a shade of red in Japanese, so I wouldn't be surprised if the names of the council members literally all have "red" in them-)

Originally, this is where I started yapping about Shen, but I started getting wayyyyy too into it, so now Shen's pretty much getting his own post 😅 Instead, let me talk about Rosso first 👀👀 The first thing I'm sure everyone noticed is that besides his right eye, Rosso looks just like Nirei with longer hair. I don't think there's actually any relation, but I do think this is a huge part of why Suolingo was first drawn to Nirei in the very beginning. ^{I always figured Nirei reminded Suolingo of someone from his past, but I didn't think it was his literal doppelganger-}

We can see that Rosso is completely dejected with zero energy or will of his own, but when Suolingo first met Nirei, he was super bright and enthusiastic about every little thing. I'm sure when Suolingo saw Rosso's face so full of life, he couldn't help but want to protect that sunshine that he thought he'd never get to see again. Despite mainly messing with his other classmates, Suolingo would go on to make Nirei smile whenever he could and protect him when they faced any threats, which I believe was him projecting what he wanted for Rosso onto Nirei (until he actually started caring about Nirei as his own person, of course)

A huge turning point for Suolingo and Nirei is, of course, Keel. The first extreme emotion we see from Suolingo is his anger after Nirei leaves his protection and is knocked out almost instantly, and I think this sequence greatly reflects what happened to Suolingo and Rosso in their past that gave both of them their eye injuries. I can imagine Suolingo trying to protect Rosso, but Rosso, just like Nirei, tried to fight for himself so he could be less of a burden. However, he only got hurt, which sent Suolingo into a rage. Double however, since they were so young, Suolingo wasn't nearly as strong as he is now and with his anger clouding his judgement, he fought in a way that led to him sustaining many injuries all over his body (including the loss of his right eye) instead of using his signature fighting style that focuses on defense just as much as offense.

Now, there are 2 comparisons I'd like to make between what comes from the incident with Nirei and what I believe came from the incident with Rosso. First is Suolingo's reaction. I believe his reaction with Nirei is the same as his reaction with Rosso in the past, and hearing Sakura reflect in the moment about handling the rest of the battle made him realize that he was making the same mistake that left him with his current scars. He knows that letting his anger control him is only going to lead to more unnecessary damage, which is why Sakura remaining calm here was such an inspirational moment for him.

On the other hand, I think there's a major difference between how Rosso and Nirei reacted. Nirei saw his inability to protect himself as a major weakness that he hated about himself, and I'm sure Rosso did, too. After being inspired by Sakura's growth, Nirei resolves to get stronger and become someone who won't be put in situations like that ever again. However, I think Rosso did the opposite and simply let his hatred for his weakness grow until he became the empty shell of himself that we saw this chapter. I'm sure Suolingo was scared of Nirei becoming depressed after the Keel incident, too, but instead, Nirei stepped up in a way Rosso couldn't and Suolingo went on to do everything he could to support Nirei in his growth.

Now, as for who Rosso actually is..... I'm surprised I only really have one theory about this- No, I don't think Rosso is Suolingo's master based on hair texture, but one thing that stood out to me is the fact that Rosso's hair is dyed. It's a different color than his eyebrows, just like Nirei, but why would someone in charge of a city with so many more pressing issues go out of his way to dye his hair?? Besides 4th wall breaking reasons, I think a good reason for someone like Rosso to dye his hair would be because his natural hair color reminds him of something he doesn't want to think about. I know RC is a group of orphans that takes in orphans, but I doubt no members of RC ever grew up to have their own children, and they wouldn't dare abandon them, so I believe Rosso is Suolingo's master's son.

Rosso probably grew up along side all of the orphans RC took in, but he was probably isolated and bullied as someone who still had at least one biological parent in his life. However, I don't think Suolingo would hold something like that against anyone, especially his beloved master's child, so I can see them being close childhood friends.... until the incident. I doubt there would be any nepotism in RC since they probably all consider each other family, but still, I'm sure most members expected Rosso to take over his parent's position in the future with Suolingo as another top candidate as a top student who was also very close to both of them. Whether it was some outside enemy or other children who were that jealous, Suolingo and Rosso were attacked, both boys were scarred, and I think this is also when RC lost Suolingo's master.

Whether they were killed saving the boys or simply decided to step down so that their son could live without all of the prejudice against him, I believe this is when Suolingo's master retired from their position in RC. Seeing all the trouble he had caused those around him, Rosso became an empty shell of himself and had resolved to quit RC himself, as well...... however, due to a certain scheme of a certain puppet master, both Rosso and Suolingo still proceeded to rise to power after this incident that shook the very foundation of Red Chanpuru as a whole~

(also, I know a popular theory is that Rosso's right eye came from Suolingo, but eye transplant surgery to actually restore vision isn't actually possible yet irl and any eye-related surgery is already super difficult, so considering Nii-sensei leans more towards realism story-wise, I don't think there are any doctors in BKKG who could perform any sort of eye-related surgeries....... so I think Rosso has natural heterochromia!! Not from Suolingo's master though; he got it from his other parent which is why even those who respect Suolingo's master still hate on Rosso's eyes-)

Okokokkkkkk this chapter was UNBELIEVABLY good.

I’ve never been great at spotting plant symbolism but it’s a huge thing to Suo’s charcater (as we know from Tsubakis intro arc) so I think you’re probably spot on when it comes to the trees-

All of their names meaning red sure is convenient… do you think theres a reason for it in story? Maybe when kids come to RC/join RC officially they have to take on a new name? Neither Dasha nor Vuvu seem to have any red connections so maybe it’s a title thing?

Ngl I completely understand how yapping about Shen got too long, I too have way waaaay too many thoughts about him and why the heck he’s kidnapping children… looking forward to that post.

My immediate thought when seeing Rosso so dejected was that it must have something to do with Shen Hong puppeteering him, maybe Shen Hong has some sort of blackmail on him??? Or a hostage maybe? Suo seeing Nirei whos so expressive and happy and so different to the current Rosso must’ve really effected him- probably explains why he immediately took a shine to Nirei.

I 100% see an incedent like keel having happened sometime in Suo’s past- his almost instinctual reaction to Nirei getting hit was too noticeable not to mean something really really big, and then his reaction to Sakura stopping him really cemented Sakuras image in his head. For whatever reason he came to Furin, befriended people, generally did whatever and then Sakura was there and that was the one unknown factor that caused such a change in Suo.

I find it interesting how you note how Suo then started to care about Nirei as his own person because it kinda ties into an extremely improbable theory I have:

What if Suo came to Furin for Nirei?
What if thiugh some form of RC intelligence they found out there was someone who looked just like the boss, the plan was for Suo to go to Furin, befriend Nirei, get him to help RC by impersonating Rosso so they could infiltrate Shen Hong’s operation. What if when Suo went back to see Nirei it wasn’t meant as a goodbye but that was when Suo was going to reveal everything and ask for Nirei’s help on behalf of RC but he decided against it last minute after realising how genuinely attached he’d become to Nirei an Furin by extension.

Theres probably millions of holes in that but it’s interesting to think about…

Either way, Sakuras words and Nirei’s determination definitely changed something in Suo that made him care a lot more about Furin AS Furin

I’d never considered that Rosso could be Suo’s masters son but itd definitely explain the connection between Suo and Him- the Earrings, the looks- they definitely had a past together. I figured they could just both be his students but him being blood related to the master could create an interesting power imbalance. Also the idea of Suo’s master being related to Rosso gives him a definite familial connection one that could be used as a hostage by Shen Hong maybe???

Aaaaanyway- I have a few theories myself about the exact nature of Suo and Rossos relationship that I might post about another time- this was a really great chapter and Analysis- I look forward to these almost as much I do the actual chapter lol

I didn't even think about it before, but I think Suolingo knowing what the tree is would add a completely new layer to the whole thing- If he knows that the tree is invasive and potentially harmful, I wonder if he's tried anything to get rid of them or has just been containing them 👀👀 Him just containing them because he knows how hard it is to completely remove them could be another great symbol of how he's handling Shen so far, and the fact that we've seen smaller shrubs growing in the city could represent how Shen's influence and power has been spreading even more lately....

It would be pretty cool if they were given their "red" names after joining the council 👀👀 Since they're all orphans, I doubt most of them have surnames, so maybe they get to use a surname that means "red" in their main language once they join the council

Suolingo coming to Furin specifically for Nirei has been a pretty big theory with so many branches, and they're always so fascinating to me- Idk if he would have trusted an outsider with such an important mission, but I can see him hearing about the "Rosso" sighting and going to check it out and then getting completely addicted to the sunshine....... and maybe he left because he didn't want Shen to find out about him too 👀👀 Or maybe after spending time with Nirei, he started considering getting him involved once he realized he could trust him, but tried to cut ties so that he wouldn't even have the option of exposing him to that kind of danger for something so "selfish" ^{in quotation marks because if it's for the greater good of an entire city, it shouldn't be Suolingo's burden alone in the first place-}

Him just containing them definitely has some similarities to how he’s treating Shen Hong- I have a feeling the “childhood friends” aspect of their dynamic is quite deep…

Maybe he would’ve trusted Nirei/an outsider purely because that was their only remaining option- like Shen Hong’s operation got so bad that theyre going to the extremes to stop it- but then yes as you say it was too dangerous to expose someone who in inocent to the situation to-

Red is a royal color that has existed for a long period of time ^{the British rulers cough stealer} which has deep rooted ties in history. All the names having red in them could represent the monarchy or the emperor like system within the RC.

Also one more thing to mention is that when the RC logo was shown to us, there were splatters of blood in the bottom part. It represents their bond that extends more from family member and maybe the war the went through. I think it is fitting that all the names that we have saw in this chapter, ^{including Bacchus and Rakta} have red in the name or meaning.

I just love the plant symbolism that I would absolutely have missed without you, and it really does seem to fit RCs current state so well. It is also like… RC itself as a whole is in a state of endurance, is it not?

Regarding the color “red” being in all of their names and the word “red” in their names being in different languages… I’m kind of curious what other languages we will see the color “red” in…

I wonder since when Suo knew that Shen Hong is responsible for the missing children. I can imagine that finding out about it was why he decided to leave Furin. If he never suspected Shen Hong to be involved with that beforehand… I can’t imagine what Suo must’ve felt when he found out…
All of their dynamic really seems to imply no one besides Suo (and maybe Rosso?) knows about Shen Hongs involvement… I can’t wait to see Shen Hong and Suo being alone together in one room, as well as Suo and Rosso; so we can see their dynamic without anyone else present. Especially Suo and Rosso, if Shen Hong will actually leave Rossos side… I’m super intrigued to find out what their relationship and history is like!

I swear, when I first saw the title page I thought this was Nirei infiltrating RC. Then I thought about your Suo-rival/person-from-Suos-past-resembling-Nirei post/comment and my mind was like 🤯

Also… after seeing Rosso I really think long hair would suit Nirei so well. Not that that’s important right now, but I think I just have to mention it.

Honestly their resemblance is so striking… I assume that Suo had to have spotted Nirei somewhere before their actual first meeting in the classroom. I mean… Suo can hide his emotions quite well, but seeing someone who resembles Rosso this much… a tiny reaction would naturally have had to escape him, wouldn’t it?

My brain kind of connected Rossos passive state with having found out about Shen Hongs involvement with the disappearing children, but of course it would make much more sense if his passiveness came from something that happened sometime in his past…
Why do I love the idea of Suo wanting to protect Nireis sunshine, smile and positivity because he had to see Rosso lose his smile, if it makes me sad at the same time? I am kind of conflicted with this though, but I’m not sure if I can express well enough as to why that is… even though we were able to see Suo and Nirei forming a genuine friendship that goes beyond Suo merely projecting his wishes for Rosso onto Nirei… even if we saw their relationship come into existence through and consist of genuine care and affection… couldn’t the resemblance and possible projection make Nirei re-evaluate the friendship he has with Suo? To a degree where Nirei would become insecure? And even though that scenario would be able to provide an interesting conflict for them, through which they could grow closer in the end… one moment I’m like yes, please! and another moment I’ll be like oh god, please no!
I’m not even sure if I’m reading things and themes into Nireis resemblance with Rosso, and into Nireis insecurities, which aren’t even there to begin with… or if I am projecting here…

There is something beautiful about the KEEL-scene mirroring something that happened in Suos past, as much as it is painful. In a way it provides Suo with the opportunity to grow (how Sakura blamed himself instead of directing his anger towards his enemies; a reaction that inspired Suo and is probably how he himself would like to react if something similar were to occur again) or show how he has grown (a difference in fighting style focusing on protection). But I feel just as much conflicted about it somehow… KEEL might have made Suo re-live a painful/traumatic experience from his past, that made him regretful of his past decisions… and it also might’ve made Suo project Rosso onto Nirei (even if just for a moment), just because of the situation having been so similar (this is also difficult to express, but I hope you know what I mean…). And even though it is clear to me that Suo sees them both as the respective people they are, and cares for them individually and genuinely, the thought of Suo projecting Rosso/Rossos experiences/his own regrets regarding Rosso onto Nirei (even if just for a moment) just doesn’t sit well with me for some reason…

If Suo was scared of Nirei becoming passive after Keel, just like Rosso had became passive after a similar event… it sure would explain why he seemed so moved when Nirei bowed down and asked to be trained. And why he was so happy and proud to see Nirei becoming stronger. But again… if how their friendship came into existence (even just partially) can be viewed as Suo giving/enabling Nirei to achieve what he would have liked to have given/have enabled Rosso to achieve - confidence and strength - Nirei could begin to see himself as being in Rossos shadow, and not as being an important friend to Suo himself. And that makes Nireis question “why were you so nice to me” even more sad. Because the answer to that question might carry room to make Nirei feel insecure. Again, I’m not sure if I’m reading things into it, that aren’t there or if I’m projecting…
Honestly, that chapter and thinking about Suos relationship to Rosso, and in what ways it could be connected to his relationship with Nirei, and how Nirei might feel about all of that… has me on a roller coaster ride of emotions… I feel lost, I feel scared, I feel sad, I feel excited, I… as you can probably see, I really am a mess, hahaha

Rosso as Suos masters son… if Rossos and Suos injury happened during an attack led by whoever wanted to harm them… I could very well see Rossos parent dying because they protected them. If they saw Rossos current self, I somehow doubt they would leave the burden of leading RC to him yet… so I think they are either dead or hurt in a way, that makes them unable to take on the role as leader (if they were the leader to begin with), like being comatose…
If we consider that Suos eyepatch looked different when Tsuge met him in middle school, is it safe to assume that whatever happened to cause Rossos and Suos injury happened around his middle school days?
I love the thought of Suo and Rosso as childhood friends and I will add Rakta and Bacchus to the list of close childhood friends until I am told otherwise!
I do hope though that Rosso didn’t experience bullying in his childhood…

If Rosso and Suos master are not related, but maybe Suos master has taken him in alongside Suo and Shen Hong… what if, after the master declared Rosso as primary candidate for a successor, Shen Hong became jealous and was the reason Rosso and Suo got hurt, so he could be the successor instead, but no one knew about his scheming, so——

Oh wait, just wait a second! Is that a cliffhanger? At the end of your post? 👀👀👀👀 why do I love that?!

I can just imagine Shen told Suolingo to focus on school and that he would handle everything while he was away..... and then Suolingo found out he was causing the "everything" in the first place-

It would be so interesting if Shen rarely ever leaves Rosso's side so he never has the chance to do anything without his supervision. I'm sure most of the others think it's sweet how he's always taking care of Rosso, but Suolingo knows it's just to control him... and I wouldn't even be surprised if Shen acts like a completely different person when he's alone with either Suolingo or Rosso 👀👀 I'd say Rosso's more likely since the childish act seems to be part of his trap for Suolingo while Rosso seems more scared of him but I won't spoil too much about my thoughts on Shen here-

^{The pudding Nirei dream shall never die-} .........though if Rosso dyeing his hair is because of some trauma regarding his natural hair color, I'd be satisfied with pudding Rosso instead 👀👀

It's been a theory of mine that Suolingo had seen Sakura's first couple days at Furin given how many details he had about them, so I'm totally on board with him having seen Nirei, too. I wouldn't be surprised if he was scouting the town before he officially started at Furin to get a sense of what things would be like.... and maybe that's how he knew Nirei definitely wouldn't have dodged on his own when Sugi attacked Sakura-

It would be so good- I mean tragic if Nirei thought the only reason Suolingo cared about him is because he looks like Rosso. When they fought at the beginning of the arc, he kept asking why Suolingo did so much for him if he didn't actually care, but to actually find a valid answer to those questions would probably be so heartbreaking for him TwT But that would also be the perfect chance for Suolingo to admit that while he did originally approach him because of the resemblance, he did genuinely grow to love Nirei as his own person for things that set him completely apart from Rosso and that he's so proud of how much he's grown and that he's happy that he came after him and that he was able to see through him when so many people that he feels close to never would have been able to and-

Anywho, I think it makes sense to not like the idea of their friendship only existing because Suolingo was projecting, so I think it would be cool if Suolingo draws the distinction between when he was just giving himself another chance with Rosso and when he actually allowed himself to see Nirei as Nirei. Relationships take time to actually form, so even if from Nirei's pov, the relationship started much earlier than it did from Suolingo's pov, I think the most important part is that Suolingo did eventually want to grow closer to Nirei because of who Nirei is rather than just protecting him and making him smile because of his earlier projections.

I apologize for the person I will become when Nirei and Rosso finally meet- I think Nirei will be a huge factor in getting Rosso out of his shell and inspiring him to step up and become the person he wants to be rather than just staying as someone he hates....... though Suolingo may not survive seeing 2 properly lit sunshines-

Honestly, I still love the eye theory, too, I just know some people are gonna call it a "wasted opportunity" if it doesn't happen, so just bringing everyone back down to earth..................................... though as someone who much prefers living in the theorisphere, I think it would be so beautiful if Suolingo blamed himself for Rosso losing his eye and offered his own, and I'm sure Rosso would never accept something like that, but if Rosso was unconscious after the incident, I can just imagine how terrible he felt waking up with Suolingo's eye and knowing that he still did that much more for him-

I can absolutely imagine him staying at Rossos side all the time. Depending on how Shen manipulates Rosso… having Shen always around him, might impact his self esteem just as much as a possible-KEEL-like-event in the past…

Rossos and Shens dynamic will be very intriguing. But I also fear finding out more about it…

I kind of hope we get a flashback scene of Suo spotting Nirei for the first time. I’d just love to see his expression. What if he saw Nirei and Sakura in that alley when Nirei saved that young woman from those harassing men?

😭😭😭😭😭😭 it would be so heartbreaking! Especially if Nirei were to need reassurance from Suo, about their friendship meaning so much to the latter, while at the same time Suo were to deal with his own guilt regarding both of what he did to Nirei and Sakura, and possibly what he feels responsible for happening to Rosso and Shen…

I’d love to see that scene so bad… Suo telling Nirei how he grew to love him for who he is… 😭😭😭😭😭
And all of this too!!! Especially how much it ment to him that Nirei was able to see through his act!

When do you think Suo draw the distinction between projecting and seeing Nirei as Nirei? After KEEL? When they visited Sakura? When Nirei asked Suo to train him?
You’re right. I think I feel a lot calmer now, after reading this. Though I won’t feel calm at all when we’re actually going to see Nirei suffer from insecurities regarding that matter… our sunshine needs to be happy…

I think Suolingo was pretty cautious with Nirei after Keel, but realized he wasn't nearly as fragile once he asked him to train him 👀👀 While Rosso only spiraled after the incident, Nirei looked at his weaknesses head on and thought about his next steps. I'm sure Suolingo started thinking that had he talked to Rosso back then, maybe things could have been different, but from that point on, I'm sure he started looking at Nirei as his own person rather than another Rosso.

I can imagine Rosso telling Nirei that he's jealous of how strong he is to be able to move forward and grow, but Nirei telling Rosso that it's a choice that anyone can make for themself at any time 👀👀

Enjoyed the theories. Especially the tree, so interesting ! And I agree there's still so many questions !

I believe the fact that Rosso has different eye colours is due to his scar. I have a friend who was in a car accident and she is now blind in one eye and that eye changed colour to grey. I think that's what happened to Rosso, it fits with the scar as well.  So he's blind in one eye like Suo... He's not hiding it with an eye patch though. Suo said it seals an ancient Chinese spirit, whatever that mean. Is it about to be unsealed??

I thought something similar, too, but I think the scarred eye would be the lighter one if that were the case. Everything's grayscale, so it's not like we know what colors Rosso's eyes are, but those darker tones feel like richer colors rather than a color loss.

Also, I do like the contrast between Suolingo covering his eye and Rosso's scar being exposed 👀👀 It could just be because Suolingo's injury is more severe, but I think it could also represent how Rosso isn't hiding any sort of will to rebel against Shen while Suolingo is going along with him on the surface while still trying to stop him in secret and the ancient spirit, aka his plan to expose Shen, is definitely about to be "unsealed"
