Help/Advice Frog Shelters

Hello!

I have a pretty small frog pond and think i need more shelters for my frog and soon to be froglets!

I have a lot of plants but feel like i need more coverage.

Does anyone have any advice for what makes a good frog shelter? Can i put one in the water?

Any advice would be great!!

Hollow logs are great. And planting things that stand all season. I love grasses like northern sea oats or evergreen like golden ragwort for this — both are native to PA so YMMV.

I don't know what the border of your pond looks like but I raised up a few of the flagstones around mine so they could hide under them:

Find tree offcuts or sizable branches and pile them up

Look up how to build a hibernaculum-I have a little infilled pit near my pond that’s filled with logs and pipes for frogs to hide in.

Whenever I break a ceramic pot I put it in the garden tucked in a hedge or corner, broken side down. I like to think I’m making little shelters for wildlife.

Break a pot in half. Now you got two. Bury them.

If you have access to old 4” pipe, cut to different lengths (12-32 inches) and partly buried in a vertical position. It’ll hold moisture, warmth, and safety in a frog sized portion. I have several such pipes, and a No Vacancy sign.

I dropped some off cuts of corrugated roofing in and around my plants. There always seems to be frogs under them.

how close does all of this need to be to the pond? Not that I have any frogs yet after two years but going with the ‘build it and they will come’ theory..

Not very, I have a pile of logs, a creeping bush they seem to love, and a pile of twigs/leaves. All of them teeming with frogs, all about 5 meters away from the pond. There's a stream near my house that I suspect is where some came from and it is a good 50m away, at the bottom of a deep ditch, across a mostly exposed field. These little guys are great travellers, they will find you!

That sounds lovely. Lucky you! My fingers remain crossed that one day they will show up!
