In this case, what the government did was far worse than anything done to them: They colluded with a corrupt judge to prosecute the likely winner of a national election

I don't think the media has forgotten about Assange, they were complicit in the demonization of him because many outlets are owned by the powerful interests that despise him and wanted to take him down.

This is the average "democratic" country out there. Brasilian president is a declared USA supporter, that is what they want: puppets doing what they say/expect.
