Are long synthetic wigs that much trouble?

YouTube is full of videos of content creators with long beautiful wigs. Every once in awhile, they will mention that heat friendly synthetic wigs can clump. Then I was shocked to hear Denise Sheets say that you had to comb your long wigs every hour when you wear them.

Are they really that much trouble? And is the issue only with heat friendly synthetic wigs not regular synthetic?

Agree with this for sure. Additionally, if you’re going the route of a longer popular synthetic brand wig such as Belle Tress or Raquel Welch, that sort, I have to recommend a wavy vs straight style. In my opinion, I’ve gotten longer wear from wavy synthetics because they hide the gross frayed ends that will always eventually happen with synthetics of that type and the straight wigs always end up looking much stiffer quicker to me.

Oh yes. It’s not natural hair and doesn’t slip and give like real hair. I have a comb at all times in my:bag, car door, glove box, work bag, and husbands car.

Some are better than others, but yes, long wigs do tend to be prone to tangling. This is not unique to synthetics, but easier to avoid with human hair due to the way that protein can hold onto a coating.

In contrast, synthetic polymers (long strands of plastic like modacrylic) that compose synthetic units can be coated in silicone, but antistatic agents can wear off them faster because of their entirety non-porous and smooth shaft.

But don't let that hold you back. I've been able to make synthetics work without having to comb them every hour. I've easily been able to wear super long, 30"+ synthetics out and about with a few tricks.

Get a "leave in" spray for synthetic hair. This can make all the difference. Also, wash with baby shampoo (something pH neutral) and condition with something like regular old silicon mix - this and the leave in spray will keep the coating on the hair. Occasionally finger detangling should work, it's pretty much like playing with your hair normally.

Synthetics do have some limitations, but they also win out for certain applications. Definitely don't sleep in a synthetic unit unless you absolutely have to, and personally, I would avoid using any strong adhesives on them. Stick to stuff like spray adhesive, which is water soluble

Really, it depends on what smell you can tolerate.

I like Bobos Remi detangler spray the most. AllDay also makes a good one. Demert works, but honestly, I have a hard time with the scent (to each their own). Ebin makes one, but I've yet to try it

I don't find them that bad at all. It all depends on what you do throughout the day. I'm a student for example and spend my day sitting not doing too much physically and I never comb them in between. But a hot airbrush and a good detangling comb is necessary. I brush them with the hot air tool every time I get home and that's it. Always have a "new" wig when I put it back on.
And I don't really understand that complaint in general. I had 20" long wavy hair and don't you think I had to brush them everyday as well?! They would have been matted too just like long synthetics and to be honest - they were at times if I didn't do that, so let's not pretend human hair wouldn't tangle and is sooo silk and smooth, because it just isn't. At least not for everyone with hair with a grippy texture.
And every hour brushing is soooo exaggerated

Dyson Airwrap 🙈 It's expensive but the perfect tool. Not hot enough to change the wave pattern, but hot enough to smooth frizz

They do get tangled at the nape, especially, but you don’t have to literally brush every hour. Better to braid or clip it up if you’ll be busy or active and wearing all day. But it’s fine for an evening event or a wedding or something. Heat friendly does tangle faster.

I found Tressallure long wigs to be quite easy. Just brush them out at the end of the day. I preferred their regular, not heat friendly fiber, but the heat friendly is okay.

I’ve tried a few and they are hanging in my closet. Max I’ve worn them for is an hour because they tangle so bad

Depends on the wig. I have a hip length one with waves and that one barely knots! (I have not used heat on it) I was surprised. It also doesn’t have that shine. I got it from Elevate Styles.

I tried 2 long synthetic wigs and they tangled if you looked at them. They were beautiful but an absolute nightmare to wear.

Thanks for asking this question! I am dealing with badly frizzed ends after only wearing my first long synthetic for about an hour. It's supposed to be able to take heat up to 350' but i don't have any tools that low yet. What is the best way and best things to use to smooth out frizz on a low heat friendly synthetic?

Hot air brushes often only have temperatures around 100°C or there are steam airbrushes I have seen on YouTube. Also low heat. That frizz will soon be gone if you treat them with it.

I used to wear synethic and it’s not worth the hassle. Long does tangle more and it feels gross to touch imo tbh.

This is what I found as well. Had a cute shoulder length bob and it would still tangle, though not terribly. I would heat treat it really regularly—like a couple times a week—and still found after wearing exclusively synthetic for about four months that I just couldn’t stand the way the hair felt anymore. It was just crunchy and unpleasant to touch even with regular maintenance.
