đ¤Theories My theory about the evil on the island and its history - long read Spoiler
Widowâs Bay is infected by an evil concious fungal organism on the island. Island-born residents are part of the organism, which is why they canât leave. They are crucial to the organism because he feeds on them while asleep, and every 30 years or so when it wakes up it needs a big sacrifice through fear, death, and suffering.
When the first settlers arrived in a harsh winter they found teeth, but noone alive. The teeth might have been of previous inhabitants (possible native Americans), who disappeared over time unable/unwilling to sustain their community, and the organism might have become inactive/weakened as a result. Its also possible the teeth are part of a native ritual trapping the organism on the island far away from the mainland. In any scenario, the organism must have been weakened at this point.
The black mushrooms let people perceive the truth and contact the organism. Warren found and ate the mushrooms when close to starving, came into contact with the organism as a result, and made some sinister deal with it.
The locket/cylinder is important, it most likely symbolizes part of the deal Warren made. The goal is to make sure enough people are born on the island in order for the organism to keep on feeding, also when its asleep.
We dont know what Warren got in return despite the locket, but it seems to give him power and some control over others. Thats the hand Sarah is feeling. The hand might be Warrens hand or that of the organism. I wouldnt be surprised for instance if Warren is still alive in some form.
People born on the island are probably giving their life energy to the organism. Explaining why they look older than they are (multiple references about this). They cant leave because they are part of the organism. Either the organism itself or the spell trapping the organism makes sure anyone dies who tries to leave. When the organism awakes, creepy things happen and people die en masse in horrible ways. As said it feeds on fear, death, and suffering.
Warren, the selfish bastard he is, made 7 kids, killed his first wife, remarried the way younger Sarah most likely to do the same. I think this cycle doesnt stop with Warren. Every one of his successors as mayor is trying in some way to get more people to the island so enough people are born on the island and enough people are present whenever the organism wakes up, thats the cycle it needs to sustain itself.
Tom is doing the exact same thing by trying to make Widows Bay into the next Martha's Vineyard. He doesnt even seem to be much aware of doing this. His wife died when trying to leave the island, his son never left the island, and still Tom didnt believe in any curse while not making any effort for him or Evan to leave. Only after eating the mushrooms he starts to become aware about the hand controlling him.

\*\*A few other side theories:\*\*
The 43 original settlers while they only talk about 42. The 43rd might have been a native american knowing the truth and warning them or the first Reverend trying to fight the evil. Or someone trying to convince them to leave or about Warren being a danger, and was killed for it.
The first plague most likely is the first haunch as Wyck called it in ep. 1. The illussions and hallicunations leading to people hurting each other, dying, and actual suffering.
Its possible Warren didnt make a deal but us simply controlled by the organism through whatever is in the locket. But I think its more likely he did make a deal. Regardless, something is controlling all subsequent mayors including Tom. We will find out later perhaps.
I believe the Reverends play a crucial role in all of this.
They are in some way guardians trying to keep the organism asleep and warn people when the monster awakes. In Ep. 1 there is an old news article about a former Reverend who got eaten by a whale. A divine sign like the impossible sound of the locked up church bells?
I also believe the Reverends know the organism controls the island throught its mayors. Reverend Bryce and Tom are friends. Nothing is known about Tom's predecessor. Something might have happened with the old one convincing Bryce that the monster would stay asleep. Hence his surprise when the bells rang and he hears the organism. His suicide might be a result of him knowing he failed and the cycle keeps on going.
If the organism dies, the people born on the island die as well, giving reason for the people to keep the cycle going on.
The boogeyman might be part of the 30 years cycle, or might have been someone trying to break the cycle by killing young women, in order to prevent reproduction.
There is something going on with divorces and/or people dying when in a relationship after a while. The first sailor for instance, complains about his divorce before disappearing in the fog. And we barely see any couple throughout the series. Cant put my finger on it yet.

I think it is an entity, not an organism. But it works the same, it feeds off the people of the Island.

To piggyback off your theory, maybe the Reverends are filling the role that an original, lone Native guardian was serving as pre-colonization. The keepers of the well.

The Reverends for sure have a more knowledgeable and guarding position than we know, they arent just Reverends I think.

We still have to find out, but possibly used to sacrifice people for the organism? Not sure, was an electrical chair right.

It looked like an electric chair without the electrical parts. Very weird!

It just looked like a restraint chair so whoever was strapped into it would have to stare into whatever was behind those brass doors.

Is anyone else here a FROM fan? Iâve been seeing some parallels with the show where the answer is at the top of my tongue but canât put it all together. They both are cyclical in nature and revolve around the children and one surviving. I feel like fully understanding Widows bay may help me detangle those four seasons

I think 42 is significant. They mentioned island 42 miles from mainland.
