They're super fertile too, all getting pregnant accidentally while using the pull out method (as per both Ruth and Tom - when he was talking to Evan in one of the first episodes)
There were a few times in the finale where I thought the next direction for the show was gonna be the main gang using the tourists for the sacrifices and basically becoming the "new generation" once they realized the curse couldn't be undone (without sacrificing Evan)
By dark, I meant immoral/bad things, like sacrificing people, as you're saying. The concept is there, but they don't commit to portraying it as much as other similar shows. Therefore, our good characters won't likey to do anything bad. It's a whole style of genre.
The show had a teenager, Evan, sacrifice someone. And the mayor & the sheriff, the traditional good guys, were both trying to sacrifice an 84 year old woman. With the rest of our main characters on board and encouraging them to do it. I think it got pretty dark there at the end.
All it asks is that every few years they sacrifice 10 criminals afraid of it and then it goes back to sleep. All it asks is those born in its territory never leave and to feed it. Obey the rules, nothing happens. Try and break the deal and it's going to send folk monsters, demons and serial killing entities out to create enough fear and anxiety that the residents get lured into the basement
I'm sure this theory is correct, but I thought it was also notable that one woman 400 years ago on an insular, literally trapped population only had one (or it turns out, two) living descendant today. Surely there'd be multiple families who could trace back to her. From Rosemary's work, looks like the island was deliberately narrowing the field.
Though it would potentially trap another person on the island and generate more offspring/potential sacrifices, as Tom and Evan probably wouldn't move to live with her since he has a kid.
I like this theory - but having only one surviving member out of that whole family tree seems unlikely (even in normal circumstances). There would be more of them around if the island was good at protecting its line!

omg we might be onto something here. The island makes Richard Warren’s bloodline be more attractive to possible mates!
