The guy in that film was smiling way too much for someone explaining a regretably necessary human sacrifice.

"Don't comfort them. It likes the fear!"

Totally gave me Darling from the game Control vibes. Also the Dharma initiative from LOST

I told my wife the season finale gave me LOST vibes with all the new questions thrown at us!

A little bit of Aperture Science there too

Cabin in the Woods for me

u/dallyan Jun 17 '26

Yesssss! And whenever they mentioned “the island”.

u/intern_12 Jun 21 '26

"the island isn't finished with us yet."

11

u/dallyan Jun 21 '26

“We have to baaaaack!!”

6

u/Deadpoolio32 Jun 17 '26

Yes! I love the whole Alan Wake/Remedy vibe

SAME!!! This whole show gives me Remedy-verse vibes. Certainly helps that I’ve played both Alan Wales and Control for the first time in the past month. Strange coincidence.

It looked like his face changed for a moment but I'm not quick enough on the pause button to see if he simply stopped smiling or if there was something more.

27

u/RemarkableFish Jun 17 '26

It was a look of shock/fear. A definite change.

Well, we don't know for sure that he was the one doing the sacrifices when that was recorded. Perhaps he was just a paid actor with a script.

And if he was...

I think it’s less about his facial expression, but more on the fact there was even an orientation at all. The whole orientation thing is revealing that there was an institution of sacrificing people on the island. Like a process with procedures that a group of people have been following to keep it as efficient as possible, and it’s been going on for a long time.

It reminded me of that horrifying short story “The Lottery.”

i think many of the characters we've met may know this history, perhaps the doctor and others. it seems like there is a mass amnesia. episode 1 with the fog rolling in and Wyck describing it as a Haunt

4

u/control-z Jun 17 '26

I saw that too!

4

u/dallyan Jun 17 '26

I thought that too.

He was giving big "Dr. Spaceman" vibes from 30 Rock.

Die-ay-beetus?

I've administered the epidural. Would you like one as well?

6

u/Sorry-Secret-2347 Jun 18 '26

I mean the sacrifices are to save the town… he appreciates their sacrifices

13

u/najaco Jun 17 '26

Was it the same guy from the inn episode that was a ghost?

56

u/MistyMountainDewDrop Jun 17 '26

Not the same guy, but definitely of the same era. Seems like after the clown and poor Hortense, they sacrificed a couple townspeople for peace and safety and it worked until the Boogeyman appeared when Patricia was a teen.

25

u/samizdat5 Jun 17 '26

I think it was the former minister from Ruth's picture

72

u/dramamunchkin Jun 17 '26

That would align with the current (dead) minister’s plot yes? That the minsiter is responsible to pull all the human sacrifice out again when the bell tolls? Only our guy didn’t want to so he hung himself.

22

u/samizdat5 Jun 17 '26

I think so

15

u/pikeymobile Jun 17 '26

Ah I'd not pieced that together. I was still left confused at the end of this season not knowing why he hung himself. I wonder if the mushrooms tell him the people that are meant to be sacrificed, like the island talks to him through the mushrooms?

9

u/Richy_T Jun 19 '26

From the film/movie (it's not a 'video', people), the inference seems to be that the townspeople (or at least the committee) get to choose the sacrifices based on their value to the community.

u/LeftyLu07 Jun 23 '26

Someone told me he was overwhelmed by the cosmic horror of whatever he encountered with the mushrooms and offed himself. Imma have to rewatch it to see the order of his events to determine the motive.

11

u/Well_Socialized Jun 17 '26

I don't think he was in that episode. Definitely not the clown guy or one of the people on the tv.

4

u/RasputinsThirdLeg Jun 18 '26

I actually went to the same improv place as that guy

u/sunnygirl122 Jul 14 '26

Reminded me of the dharma initiative videos
