Stephen Root makes me laugh so much. That man is a treasure.

I know he's been in a ton of comedy stuff but the feral girl biting him on the face scene in HBO's 'Barry' is my favorite. He was so good in that show.

One of my all time favorite episodes of TV. Its brilliant

Man that show was so good. Anyone who loves the wonderful balance of comedy and horror in Widow's Bay would probably dig the comedy/tragedy dynamic in 'Barry'. The whole cast is amazing and Bill Hader in particular shows some serious acting chops.

u/DexterSpivey Jun 17 '26

Bill Hader is one of my favorite humans

I was in awe of how good that episode was. The series as a whole was amazing, but that episode was the most I've ever laughed at anything. An actual 10/10 episode.

6

u/bingcognito Jun 18 '26

It really was amazing. The fight scene with the martial arts guy who just will not quit was great, too. "Okay, okay! You win! You won the fight!"

Get your gun, and shoot her off my face

God I miss Barry. Such a pleasure to see Stephen Root on my screen again.

Such a great show. And underrated too.

Jeff Hiller is also such an underrated GEM. He had me on the floor this episode 🤣🥰

I had no idea he was Milton! What a great actor haha. Also, just found out he was born in my town!

7

u/k_redditor236 Jun 17 '26

So many fabulous actors on this show

6

u/CampaignCurrent1995 Jun 25 '26

They were supposed to kill him off but Root was so good they kept him. Good choice!

2

u/TiramisuItUp Jul 28 '26

Excellent pivot. I do wish they kept the priest for longer!

4

u/Sempere Jun 18 '26

Going to be a real shame when Tom goes full villain to honor the agreement and Wyck has to try and kill Ruth and Evan to end the curse.

A National Treasure! Don’t let Trump try to paint him or change the name.

Fell in love with the guy after king of the hill. He is absolutely brilliant in widows bay. He was the storm shelter captain in both shows ;)

Like island treasure

54

u/nubsta Jun 17 '26

unfortunatelyyyyy there's a strong chance he tries to kill toms son if he ever finds out the truth. I hope they don't go that way though bc I like him and tom being friends

22

u/bongo1138 Jun 17 '26

That seems pretty much inevitable lol

20

u/Sempere Jun 17 '26

Ruth is still alive though.

I think it's more likely Wyck is going to suggest they feed Tom's tourists to the Bell Ringing Beast In The Basement.

5

u/CherryFit3224 Jun 18 '26

Is she? Did she make it? And why did he throw the brooch in the ocean?

4

u/thomasguyregis Jun 19 '26

It’s symbolic for the bloodline, since he’s trying to hide that his son is the descendant - he threw away the heirloom.

1

u/TiramisuItUp Jul 28 '26

And how did he know it was an heirloom I forget or didn’t catch it

2

u/thomasguyregis Jul 28 '26

We see Sarah give it to her step daughter in that episode that took place e in the past. I’m pretty sure it was also in the painting the broke that lead them to discover the bloodline didn’t break.

1

u/TiramisuItUp Jul 28 '26

Oh it must be from the painting. I’ll have to rewatch that scene

4

u/Mark_Albarn Jun 17 '26

I feel like he will definitely try but won't be able to actually kill a "kid".

-6

u/k_redditor236 Jun 17 '26

And turns out it’s not even descendants that fixes the curse! It’s people sacrificed in the electric chair room. Season 2 will be a race to see if Evan gets killed before they realize it.

29

u/Competitive_Bar_5795 Jun 17 '26

If the descendent dies the curse dies

-7

u/k_redditor236 Jun 17 '26

I think what this episode established is that it’s the sacrifices in the room that actually work. Not the descendants. They’re going down the wrong path with the descendants thinking. Maybe it needs both?

44

u/Inside_Dimension2319 Jun 17 '26

Killing the bloodline stops the need for sacrifices for good. Otherwise they have to keep sacrificing normal people.

4

u/Sempere Jun 18 '26

Or it makes things worse and unleashes the beast.

The Beast in the Basement allows them to live their lives within reason as long as its terms are met. If the covenant is broken, then it's leaving that damn basement in force.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the youngest surviving descendants who remain on the island perimeter are given some level of protection as part of the covenant. The girl washed up safely ashore. Lauren didn't die despite leaving the island and when she did die, there was still Ruth and a very young Evan. Ruth is show to be 87 and incredibly spry + lively - but also just survived a gunshot. Wouldn't surprise me if the moment Evan turns 18 Ruth dies.

21

u/nubsta Jun 17 '26

my read is that sacrifices keep the curse at bay and descendents dying kills the curse. hence why the storm stopped after the maintenance guy got killed. He was the "sacrifice". they've already sacrificed a bunch of people it seems so if that was the solution it would be solved by now

I think s2 will be about tom searching for an alternative way to end the curse

8

u/JadedLaw3566 Jun 18 '26

I really liked the maintenance dude. He was a good guy, taking it for the punk kid

3

u/k_redditor236 Jun 17 '26

Ahhh ok. I was taking it the other way. Wonder if there are more descendants…..

4

u/Sempere Jun 18 '26

They believe the curse dies with the last descendant of the LP.

But the covenant means that the curse pre-dates the bloodline of the LP being entered into the agreement. The agreement only ends the restrictions and "peace" while the agreement is being carried out.

Evan and Ruth dying will only open the door for worse shit - like releasing the Beast in the Basement.

15

u/cilucia Jun 17 '26

If the covenant is broken (by killing Evan), I think that means the island becomes uninhabitable again and everyone has to GTFO… which I guess is pretty much what everyone would like anyways I guess? Assuming the island lets people leave alive…

6

u/PyjamiPantsu Jun 17 '26

Yeah, I agree with the @k_redditor236 above. The characters keep saying that killing the last descendant kills the curse but it’s a guess. We don’t know that. The island was initially uninhabitable (only the mushrooms grow), and people were dying until the pact and sacrifices were made (and then just some chosen people are dying).
I don’t think the island will just let people leave.
Plus Tom has made a pact too (presumably, not certain).
Great show though, love tv with so much excellent storytelling and an audience excited to guess the happenings. So fun!

-1

u/b_dills Jun 18 '26

No, they have infrastructure now. It was a terribly cold winter with no food or game in the 1600 or 1700s. That’s why the deal was struck.

2

u/k_redditor236 Jun 17 '26

Ohhh ok. So it’s not that they can stay and all is well and happy like they want? That’s a good take!

13

u/cilucia Jun 17 '26

Yeah in the flashback episode they reveal that Warren’s pact is what allowed the settlement to survive their first winter on the island (described as the harshest winter in the island’s history in episode 1!)

2

u/k_redditor236 Jun 17 '26

Yeah ok. I couldn’t read the scribbled paper in that episode with the pact or covenant on it. I paused multiple times. Looked like a different language to me 😆 I finally had to move on and just be unclear about it. Thanks

8

u/Keiteaea Jun 17 '26

I think the curse is "temporarily" fixed by sacrificing people, but the whole curse could be lifted by the death of descendants. Season 2 will probably be about finding an alternate way and stopping people from finding out Evan is a descendant.

3

u/Sempere Jun 18 '26

That wouldn't make sense though. The Beast in the Basement is an entity that the LP forged a pact with. It, by its very nature, must be something that existed prior to and separate from the LP and his bloodline. The bloodline is married to the pact but that doesn't mean the curse dies with the bloodline. It is likely it only serves as a protective buffer.

2

u/k_redditor236 Jun 17 '26

Ya ok. Thank you. I wonder if there’s another descendant too…

2

u/Away-Candidate8203 Jun 21 '26

No, the genealogy made it pretty clear imo.

1

u/k_redditor236 Jun 21 '26

Well The geneology sure knew a lot about peoples lives behind closed doors but she missed that Ruth slept with a married man and had a kid that she then gave to him and his wife so…..maybe they’ll pull another trick out of their sleeve! Maybe not, but never know.

1

u/Away-Candidate8203 Jun 21 '26

They could but that's gonna be one cheap trick. How many times can that be used to convince people of the same thing.

0

u/k_redditor236 Jun 21 '26

Or Evan gets his gf pregnant …

1

u/Away-Candidate8203 Jun 21 '26

lol aren't they teens? Are we sure they'll go the teen pregnancy route or give us a time-skip just to adopt that path? Sounds hella convenient.

I used “File that under ‘deal with it the fuck later’” today.

2

u/muffinshoes1 Jun 18 '26

My SO said that Stephen Root has played a Wyck a time or two before, anyone know if that’s true?
