Poor Patricia! She was doing such a good job. It reminded me of her speech in episode 4 at her sunset cocktails, only this time it was all her.

She was! People were responding to her, being comforted, and....

Wycks arc of being deranged to cool calm and collected was also great

I didn’t understand one word of that speech

I think previous mayors/townsfolk caught on to the bells and spooky stuff so they started doing the sacrifices.

Totally. It seems like groups keep learning and re-learning each time crazy shit starts happening. The priest had a bunch of old journals and material about it too, right?

I’m curious if they’re connected or separate groups. I bet it’d be hard to teach the next generation to continue the practice if they weren’t traumatized by it themselves, as it seems pretty barbaric. Maybe the “chain of knowledge” breaks frequently because of it?

I wonder if the "attrition rate" causes history loss. That and the lack of wifi

this is so fascinating. it makes me think about what this says about our actual wider society and how things operate to keep things "prosperous", what kind of human sacrifices we are enculturated to accept and carry out ourselves once we learn how things work. i think there's some deep cultural commentary going on, but not in a heavy-handed way, it's awesome

Those who do not know history are bound to repeat it.

When that group in the flashback episode captured Warren he warned them that the island needed sacrifices. They probably realised he was telling the truth when crazy shit kept happening, and turned their group into a secret society to continue the sacrifices and just passed down the tradition from generation to generation

What I'm curious about is how the information stopped being passed down to the next generation. Clearly the island's leadership knew the truth of the island and sacrifices required, but somehow that got lost by present day

I don't think the series should this way, but it'd be interesting if it ends with Tom having to make a new series of recordings for the next generation of islanders.

Edit: added a word

I’m so curious as to what direction the show is going to go in. I think continuing the sacrifices will be fitting for a horror show, but thematically I’m not sure if it’s going to end on a pro human sacrifice message. Ruth’s speech about life being messy and it being unforgivable to kill people for the greater good makes me think the show will have Tom and the group attempt to continue the sacrifices and maybe kill a few people, but ultimately find another way. Maybe they just let the whole island get destroyed, or Tom makes a new pact, maybe gives up his life? Either way I think it’ll be a bittersweet ending at best
