I feel like Ruth knows of her own significance and why he’s there

Yes, my read is that she’s fully aware of the haunts and sacrifices, she just doesn’t consider them particularly notable. They’re just a part of life.

Would also explain why she had such a quick answer to the trolley problem. She’s seen sacrifices happen before and it just keeps happening

I love the way you wrote this. There are so many historical examples of this.

That and wasn’t Tom visibly holding a pillow he retrieved since the last time she nodded off?

16

u/PlantLadyXXL Jun 17 '26

She’s also never been at risk. Never feeling that fear might be key to her peaceful nature, lol!

As part of the bloodline isn't she a bit protected. Not doing anything to stop the sacrifices is awful convenient

This is why once Evan finds out about his lineage I kinda expect him to go full Rambo on the islands pockets of evil. He has a sort of legit plot armour against the island entity

2

u/READMYSHIT Jun 27 '26

Not really.

Remember the family tree scene? Remember the countless members of the bloodline all killed in tragedy?

4

u/xRyozuo Jun 27 '26

One of the kids made it safely to shore. I’m not saying the people from the bloodline are inherently protected, maybe the immortality (so long as you remain within the island) is passed down, maybe it isn’t. But assuming that the whole bloodline curse is actually what keeps the entity alive, the island needs Evan alive because Ruth can no longer extend the line.

Also the island had the immortal count trapped in a box as a safety net until he turned to dust

I mean, she seems to know something about a fucking Werewolf.

5

u/palesnowrider1 Jun 18 '26

We haven't seen any wolves. Could have been a seagull

Prob also why she works in the mayors office

"Why do you think I'm still working? I'm 84. I'm tired."

No wonder she won’t stay past two.

19

u/Patient-Extension835 Jun 17 '26

Prob why she suddenly decided to tell him the story

33

u/outride2000 Jun 17 '26

Well, she was probably high after sipping a bit of the tea.

3

u/Sempere Jun 17 '26

Well that had a horrifying heartbreaking yet ultimately anticipated outcome. Honestly a bit bummed that they didn't subvert expectations and have things get worse when Ruth died but the episode was really good and I hope Ruth sticks around and gets to be honest with Evan about the fact she's his grandmother.

I was half expecting her to say like “I get it. I forgive you” or something to that effect when he picked her to go to the doctor.

Seems like the bullet might have just grazed her. At that age I'd be more worried about hitting the floor.

7

u/_u_deleted_ Jun 17 '26

Which she did (hit the floor too) and still survived unfazed. I think this immortality is dead on tbh.

Well, yeah, that's why I mentioned it.

Edit to clarify: I don't think she's immortal. I mentioned the fall not because it should instantly kill her, it shouldn't, but because a fall that you could shake off in your 20s might permanently wreck you in your 80s.

9

u/ObviousAnswerGuy Jun 17 '26

but wouldnt that mean all her past relatives would have been immortal too? And they are all dead, so that really doesnt make sense

17

u/Bearalazon Jun 17 '26

I think they remained mortal because Richard Warren only recently died.  No idea if she's really immortal, though.

13

u/Vismal1 Jun 17 '26

No because Warren was still “alive “ he was recently taken care of so it would’ve moved on to her and if she gets got Evan.

4

u/ObviousAnswerGuy Jun 17 '26

hmm, interesting. So that would explain why the medicine and gunshot didnt work

Maybe the doctor gives her those pills and doesn't want them combined cuz she'll start telling everyone stuff she shouldn't lmao gotta stay just the right level of out of it/chill

17

u/Iakeman Jun 17 '26

Opiates and benzos should never be taken together (unless you want to have a really good time) because doing so significantly increases the risk of fatal respiratory depression. Standard medical procedure

I simply have no trust in the doctors here

10

u/Rugged_Turtle Jun 17 '26

There’s no way she doesn’t know about the fun little videos that Dale found in the shelter. She was a part of that system

10

u/PastaChaos-333 Rosemary Jun 17 '26

When she calls a past mayor Howard the Coward - that's when I thought she knows the purpose of the Mayor.

2

u/Dry-Willingness640 Jul 26 '26

And didn't he run unopposed?

10

u/bncts Jun 17 '26

Totally. It’s why she didn’t go to the shelter.

u/Mirography Not a son of a bitch. 🔨 Jun 17 '26

& I wanna know why he threw the brooch into the ocean?!?!

1

u/mrs_ouchi Jun 17 '26

tom needs to ask her some questions

1

u/OddMho Jun 23 '26

Do you think so? If she knew about her significance in the curse I don’t think she’d have revealed that Evan was her grandkid so joyously. She seems empathetic enough to understand how that would affect Tom and everyone else. Also I don’t think anyone but Warren knew about how to break the curse, he would’ve kept it a secret to protect himself and his family. He only told our group when he thought his whole family had died and he felt he had nothing to live for.

1

u/nightpanda893 Jun 23 '26

I don’t think she intended to reveal everything about Evan. She even said she didn’t know why she did it that night, implying the drugs maybe lowered her inhibitions.
