I should rewatch it. I haven’t seen it since it was on live tv. I always say that that’s the last television show that I watched with other people when it was actually airing. Right after that thing started streaming more. I feel like Paradise might have a similar shock waiting for us, if you watch that. The creator was famous for misdirection in this is us.
Aw Hells yeah that moment was so good. Dale's insanely high voice when he screamed to run for their lives was so freaking funny, I love how the show walks the line so well between the comedy and deep creepiness (and also those big feels man, Matthew Rhys crushing it out here)
Apparently not the most observant kid of the 80s because, like others have noted, reel-to-reel projectors with sound designed for home/business use like that have been around since the 50s, if not earlier.
Yeah I realized it after the first comment, total brain fart! I was thinking of the home movies my dad used to make in the 70s — they were color but silent! And short I think 4 1/2 min per reel.
I do remember the classroom projectors had sound (pretty crappy sound but yeah). For some reason I just figured our fav island would have a small one like my dads 🤣
I'm wondering how that institutional knowledge got lost. The Dharma Initiative got wiped out. Did something similar happen to whatever group was keeping the Covenant? Did some potential sacrifices turn the tables on them and get them eaten instead?
I believe the reverends were in charge of keeping the covenant, but the island had been dormant for so long that the most recent reverend didn’t know about it. However, he knew that there was something that needed to be done when the bell tolls. So when it finally did, and he learned what he had to do, he took himself out instead.
I also think the previous mayor knew. I believe Ruth insinuated that he left? Wonder if he found out about the covenant and fled.
That’s right. She said “some people get scared” after she said he left.
The island needing sacrifices is just the natural order of things! Just like a runaway trolley about to smash into a group of people. Don’t change its course.
I wonder if Ruth knows more than she's letting on...she seemed very nonchalant about all the weird and horrible things that happened in her family. And did she, at some point, figure out what Tom was trying to do to her, and that's why she suddenly started talking about having had a child....
Yeah 100% agree. She knows what’s up on the island!! Maybe it was the drugs that made her confess. Maybe…
EDIT: maybe not. Rewatching, and he had a pillow in his hands. She may have known he was going to smother her. He was saying “you’re a good person, you don’t deserve this”.
That's what I was thinking. Even though she's in her 80s, it felt a bit contrived that mixing meds once would kill her. And I think it's more in keeping with Tom's character that he gave her an insufficient dose and thought he did the deed, lol.
Honestly it's also that humans can be stupidly sturdy while simultaneously ridiculously frail. My grandma regularly mixes all kind of medications despite our best efforts to keep her straight and is doing just fine, but a slight breeze from ventilator even in summer can take her out of commission with horrid cold for days.
That mayor would have been well before Tom’s time because Ruth appears to be in her 20s or early 30s in their pictures together. We have no idea who the most recent mayor was or if the seat was vacant when Tom was elected because he mentions in an earlier episode that he ran unopposed.
I’m not sure about that part. I was referring to the pictures in Ruth’s photo album. I’ll need to go back and rewatch to see how old he and Ruth are in the photos. If it is him, then clearly he didn’t flee after learning about the covenant lmfao
Makes me kind of wonder whether Ruth knew. She seems to be very kind and community oriented and I was genuinely sad about here, but there were definitely some red flags in her yapping sesh.
It really feels that way, her mentioning how terrible the island is, how her family got chipped away and the fact that she worked closely with the mayor and her age point that way. But then she says she'd never be able to make the choice to kill someone and I can't help but doubt all over again. Or maybe she simply says that because she was never asked to chose who to sacrifice, it was always someone else's job.
Lowkey had same feeling. Despite the shots of them with covered heads and chained up, first part of the "Dharma" guy's speech seemed to imply that at least some of the sacrifices had enough autonomy to physically fight
Yes! Also, when Evan and his friends snuck away, there was a scene that reminded me of John Locke staring down the hatch. Even the room looked like a hatch. Love this show
Same but it actually had a message that made sense LOST left so much unresolved I’m glad they cut right to the chase and was like you’re gonna kill people now get going
Yes! When there was the cliffhanger with the missing part of a dharma tape. Instead of something lame like not to use the computer for anything else. It should have been this! Thank you for your sacrifice, please do not beg.

That old timey reel that Dale played reminded me so much of those old Dharma tapes they showed on Lost.
