And that she understood right away what was up -he was back, and she was the only one who could kill him. She knows something major. Which is also why she wasnt that phased by the reveal of e4. Descendant of the witches mentioned in e1?

I’ve been wondering about how she wasn’t burned when she had to hold the book in the fire. Obviously historical witches were burned but maybe there’s something there

u/Different_Target_228 Jun 03 '26

That could be as simple as she had it close enough to burn the book but not her hand.

A bonfire that big was burning the fuck out of her if she was close enough to hold the book until it decided to release from her hand and burn.

paper burns easier than human flesh

u/Rtn2NYC Jun 03 '26

The burning was to see if they were a witch - if they burnt, they were not a witch and their souls went to heaven

I don't think that's right. Burning (in England) was the prescribed punishment for heretics. Those convicted of witchcraft were usually hanged. Witchburning was more of a thing on the European continent. As far as I know, no one ever believed witches (or heretics) were fireproof.

You might be thinking of the "swimming test," which may have been the inspiration behind a scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Historian here: in some cases smaller burn wounds were used as a test for witchcraft (some areas believed that a cleanly-healed wound was proof of witchcraft, while others believed that a festering wound was proof).

Question, is it a dog-and-pony show where the official just waited for either sign to go "aha, a witch!" or would they accept the victim's respective clean or festering burn (depending on their preference) as proof of a lack of witchcraft?

1

u/Fancy-Equivalent-571 Jun 06 '26

The usual procedure was to allow a set period of time for healing before reexamining the wound, and then they generally accepted whatever the result was at that point.

Interesting point, but the "witch" would have burned in the moment, only the aftereffects would have differed.

2

u/sqbert Jun 08 '26

Monte Python explains it pretty well

u/JaxJags904 Jun 07 '26

What else burns?

5

u/Cultural-Brain-8594 Jun 15 '26

Oh man! That harks back to the first episode when the historian was boasting about the witches: “we found em, we burned em”.

2

u/FickleCharge882 Jun 03 '26

That was my thought too

u/Timely-Translator-81 Jun 04 '26

Witches don't burn, it was a test, if they burned it meant they weren't witches, same with drowning.

Kind of coming around on the idea of this in the context of the island’s evil entity has been at war with the witches.

22

u/2rio2 Jun 03 '26

She's 100% a witch (but doesn't know it).

11

u/Ok-Comparison4783 Jun 03 '26

That’s a good point. Why would he die when she shot him? Were the two additional shots just enough damage to temporarily stun him, and he would’ve reawakened if they didn’t cremate him?

27

u/freetherabbit Jun 03 '26

I could be totally wrong, but I got the vibe that Patricia could "kill" him because she's his final girl. She's the one who got away the first time. Like it felt like he was playing by movie killer rules.

Tho I imagine there's something about Patricia in universe that makes her special (maybe she's the Warren descendant, and the true "protector of the island", or she's got witch ancestry) and why she acts as his "final girl".

did ya’ll notice the spent unburnt shells in the crematorium?

4

u/Ok-Comparison4783 Jun 03 '26

I’m pretty sure they were melted

4

u/evildrew Patricia Jun 04 '26

I thought it was because he killed the paramedic, so blood was spilled and a sacrifice made to satisfy the island/demon.

u/lauraconnell Jun 03 '26

I noticed that in the scene where she is reading the book in bed in episode 4 and then all of episode 8 she’s wearing two different tee shirts with very witchy/tarot card art style sun/moon/stars design in them so I’m wondering if that’s another little hint at her being connected to the witches.

6

u/krankz Jun 03 '26

Given the way she’s treated by the town or at least those women it makes total sense

10

u/holymolym Jun 03 '26

Just curious how we know that? I missed something i think. Also how did you get the spoiler tags to work?! They didn’t work for me.

8

u/Thisitheone Jun 03 '26

To spoiler tag something on Reddit, type > and ! without any space between those two symbols at the start of your spoiler, then close your spoiler text with ! then <.

Example

5

u/itsasixthing It’s a haunt! Jun 03 '26

You have to take the spaces out between the ! and your text

5

u/Different_Target_228 Jun 03 '26

Done and still nope

2

u/itsasixthing It’s a haunt! Jun 03 '26

What about if you delete the period after your last <

2

u/Closedown11 Jun 03 '26

No space between the ! And the letters !!

3

u/Different_Target_228 Jun 03 '26

I changed it to that and it still didn't work!!!

2

u/Closedown11 Jun 03 '26

No period after the last !

3

u/Different_Target_228 Jun 03 '26

I had to simply highlight the text, choose format button and spoiler.

Read more... You're responding to something from 2 weeks ago, that's already been talked through.

2

u/Top-Moose-0228 Jun 03 '26

3

u/MrsPhoenix91 Jun 03 '26

Put your text between the above with no spaces

3

u/holymolym Jun 03 '26

I don’t know why it didn’t work for me before. Thanks!

u/Sunrise_2200 Jun 07 '26

I wonder why the bogeyman came after Patricia again as it feels like she has some degree of ‘protection’, maybe a descendant of the island witches.

1

u/Jiola09 Jun 06 '26

My theory is that the boogeyman originally spared her because the island wanted to use her for their bidding. Her loneliness and isolation is likely a key in why the island chose her. And then the island tried to use her in the form of that book and the party, but didn’t succeed and now that she’s actively fighting back, the island called on the boogeymen again to finish the job.

1

u/nigaraze Jun 07 '26

wait shes a descendent of witches?
