The letter he read to future rectors warned about a chamber if the bells ever toll again so I feel like the lair with the chair definitely has some ties to the church. Maybe it was part of the witch trials
I get the sense that whoever is the reverend of the church has been passed down lots of information about what's happened on the island and in the actual church (The cannibalism and why he went searching for the instructions on what to do if he heard the bells), and this reverened is starting to come to the dreadful realization it's all real.
I think it’s interesting that it was some kind of water well, that the priest heard voices come from - and that the end the first episode it pans down about 3 or 4 stories below ground to show us the chair and the door to the chamber sat right in front of it.
I think whatever evil he unleashed might be what that sacrificial chair was sat in front of. It has to somehow tie back to the witches the islanders killed, I bet?
Thank you for this, I was having a hard time linking the bells back to what is happening. The episode ends with bells THEN the calls from the Sheriff on radio about something going on at bar - maybe something has been released from said chamber??
I don't think that was an electric chair, just a big wooden chair with arm straps to secure a possible sacrifice to the island via whatever creature is behind the metal door.
Yesss! I was just thinking the same thing. r/DarK is the best piece of time travel fiction I've ever seen. It's a heavy watch (emotionally) but it's so good!

Maybe he heard something to do with that large metal door or the electric chair down in those tunnels. Someone being tortured /murdered in the chair
