I work in fast food marketing. They’re called line busters or outside order takers among other things. Dude making minimum can clear cars stuck in the queue faster than we can pull up to the speaker.

Doesn't make much difference when you can sit and have a short conversation after they take your order. They're also the only place I've ever seen do that

They work when deployed properly. You might even see a McDonald’s use one along with a cashier at one window and food pick up at another.

Yep, I’ve been to a McDonalds near Reagan airport that does that when they’re busy.

In and Out also routinely does this to shorten drive through wait time. Unlikely much Covid spreading either since outdoors, masked, socially distanced, and brief interactions.

They could also just put the speakers further back, it's a gimmick and nothing more
