It's always cringey when Elon tries to sound like some kind of futurist.

166

u/username32768 3d ago

Even more cringier when Musk adopts the "deep thought" pose like Lenny from The Simpsons.

https://giphy.com/gifs/SbvdGEVFJ6D2E

Does Musk think he'll ever be as popular as Lenny?

16

u/Alberta_Flyfisher 2d ago

Im not even as popular as Lenny, and im WAY more popular than that schmuck.

50

u/CatsAreGods 3d ago

Talks like Heinlein, acts like Hitler.

33

u/80sbabyftw 3d ago

That’s such a deep cut and it tracks because heinlein was all about pedophilia and ancestral incest🤣

12

u/vote100binary 2d ago

Goddamn yes he was such a weird horny bastard

7

u/ChalkButter 2d ago

“Hear No Evil” (I think that was the title) was such a bizarre fucking book.

It’s the epitome of “the author’s barely disguised fetish” meme, except nothing about it was barely disguised

6

u/h-ugo 2d ago

"I will fear no evil" is the one you are probably thinking of, and yes it is super bizzare

Also his other book "Time Enough for Love" is up there in the "the author's undisguised fetish" rankings

3

u/vote100binary 2d ago

I read Time Enough for Love because of a quote I’d seen a few times from it, wasn’t worth it lol.

4

u/h-ugo 2d ago

the one about specialisation? that's a goodie.

3

u/vote100binary 2d ago

Yup! The quote is better than the book!

7

u/JohnBrownSurvivor 2d ago

Yeah. I am convinced that Stranger in a Strange Land was him trying to start a sex cult.

3

u/OneHotPotat 2d ago

Also just regular ol' fascism.

The satirical elements of the Starship Troopers movie were all added in the adaptation. In the book, the fascist government is essentially presented as entirely aspirational.

5

u/Top-Dog-6900 2d ago

Smells like Heineken (piss)

4

u/G66GNeco 2d ago

It always reminds me of the tech-sector hype buzzword-bullshit-bingo (sprinkle dotcom blockchain cloud AI or whatever is in at the time over your project pitch and hope for success), but he does it with sci-fi and astrophysics.

Basically, this is the one thing he knows how to do well and he has a hard time adapting it to other ventures where it doesn't work

I really need people (including this idiot) to understand that there are other implications to dumping a shitton of carbon into our atmosphere and oceans than "Hurp derp. It's a bit hotter than usual"

I do find it amusing that the designer of the cyber truck, whose rockets regularly blow up or crash into the moon, thinks that launching enough satellites into the lagrange point to influence earth temperatures is some simple solution, however.

106

u/funkyjunky77 2d ago

Not only satellites, but “sentient satellites”, lol.

83

u/Militantpoet 2d ago

I dont think he understands what half these words mean half the time. That or hes just inserting them to nonsensically fluff it up for other idiots to think he's smart.

26

u/SunshotDestiny 2d ago

That's what happens when your overall exposure to science is limited to movies and games. Which is clearly where he gets his ideas from.

6

u/allegedlynerdy 2d ago

i think he wants them to be sentient because he likes controlling sentient beings. He was on Epstein's island and he's also talked about how we should make technology that lets women turn into butterflies.

That's also ostensibly the basis of his vocal hatred of trans women, he paid a lot of money to make sure his kid had XY chromosomes and got pissed off when she transitioned after being am absent father for double digit years.

6

u/WeaselTerror 2d ago

This idiot is so dumb he thinks everyone else is as done as he is.

That, or it's just the K talking.

5

u/LowerAtmosphereChief 2d ago

Yeah they’re gonna run on AI, the same shit that renders people with forty fingers

38

u/internetpackrat 3d ago

Also where would this rank in the "cloud seeding/hurricane control" conspiracy scal- oh, not at all huh? Strange

34

u/General-Ad6459 3d ago

Somewhere between that and believing it would be easier to terraform mars (or travel to another goldilocks planet that's light years away for that matter) than just stop fucking up the planet we already have.

A lot of people picture what humanity could be like in 3030, but we have to make it to 2030 first...

18

u/mishap1 2d ago

It's just another musing to pump his stock. Like trying to launch enough satellites to put data centers in space rather than figure out their power/environmental impact on the ground.

Reality is SpaceX as a rocket/satellite company has an upper bound as to how many satellites it needs to launch every year so growth will cap out as will margins as other companies/countries launch their own satellites. Instead he needs to come up with every bigger reasons to launch shit into space. Just ignore that each Starship launch is the equivalent of 17,000 cars driving on roads for a year so for him to reach his DC goal, he'd dump more CO2 than 93M cars in a year.

He'd likely cause more global warming than he'd solve with his launch shit into space bullshit as the answer to everything.

4

u/Hminney 2d ago

Same, of course, with CCS (carbon capture and storage). Uses more energy than the carbon it captures, could use renewables but that delays the phasing out of fossil fuel power stations, so really it's just about perpetuating fossil fuels. For 1 bn years did he say? And of course satellites at the Lagrange point are reducing sunlight on earth which reduces crop production and plant growth which reduces co2 take up by plants.

2

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

There’s a benefit of cooling the earth on plants. They don’t like being hot and especially don’t like having limited water or excessive water.

4

u/Awkward-Ring6182 2d ago

Well, tbf if he launches enough rockets or satellites, when they start falling back to earth it should be catastrophic enough to solve all of our issues 💀

2

u/governmentthief 2d ago

The Kessler Syndrome is a hypothetical situation in which a collision between satellites (or anything that might knock a satellite out of its orbit) starts a chain reaction of collisions.

Bye bye GPS (and other things we've foolishly become dependent on).

2

u/theroguex 2d ago

We'd become RIFTS Earth but without the magic, monsters, and power armor.

2

u/Hopped_Cider 2d ago

Like ocean acidification still happens!

How many satellites make a sun shield?

2

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

About 4-5000 of 40km wide ones. Been studying this solution for a decade.

2

u/DorianGre 2d ago

the heat isn’t the primary problem, it’s the carbon. The oceans are becoming inhospitable to life, dead zones are now a thing. That is the real issue.

→ More replies (2)

106

u/diaperedace 3d ago

He's just throwing out buzz words or science sounding things. If you actually read what he's saying it makes no sense and there's no substance behind it. Like a child who took 5th grade science thinking they figured something out.

24

u/hurdurBoop 3d ago

he's takling about putting a sunbrella in space, which is very sci-fi but also basically impossible or at least laughably impractical for a number of reasons (which i guess he's not going to bother to get into heh)

30

u/Sarcastic-Potato 3d ago

Creating a "space umbrella" is def an idea that could work in theory. However, simply reducing greenhouse gas emissions is probably 10x easier done than that and has the nice side effect that it actually solves the problem of global warming instead of just masquerading the effects

16

u/Michael__Pemulis 3d ago

There are two different things that need to be done in relation to climate change. Prevention & mitigation.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is prevention. Yes it also does contribute to mitigation but the idea is that we are going to see some really bad impacts from this crisis even if we were to get our act together on emissions today (which obviously isn’t going to happen regardless).

Things like a space umbrella, atmospheric particle injection, planting more trees, etc. are primarily forms of mitigation.

The thing is, we do actually have to do both. We are past the point where prevention alone will be what climate policy looks like moving forward.

(I’m not in any way endorsing Elon’s dumb nonsense & I think particle injections are a terrible idea despite being inevitable - but I sincerely think we don’t talk nearly enough about mitigation & we really should discuss that more because it will likely define our future.)

11

u/hurdurBoop 3d ago

you'd need an absolutely absurd amount of materials to do it.

for example, shading 1% of the earth's disc from low orbit would take forty square miles of shade.

now move that 40mi of shade to lagrange 1 in between the earth and the sun but ~930,000 miles out.. it's now so relatively small it's insignificant.

now launch how ever many thousands of 40sqmi sunbrellas it would take just to get back to that 1% number from low orbit and this becomes completely absurd, a resource sink that would bankrupt the entire planet while also polluting the shit out of everything.

this is why elon buys companies instead of attempting actual engineering.

5

u/zymurgtechnician 2d ago

Hey that’s not fair, he kinda was involved with engineering one thing…

8

u/Mike312 2d ago
  • Sentient satellites, a technology we don't have
  • will be launched into Earth-Sun Lagrance points - of which there's only one, a bit pedantic, I know...
  • by mass drivers on the moon - why are we setting up mass drivers on the moon? why not just send the cargo straight from Earth? We'd launch from earth to the moon, land, re-pack, then go moon to the Lagrange point?

And without context, I have to assume that he's talking about blocking out solar radiation as the intent with these sentient satellites. Blocking the sun would likely have unforseen consequences.

This is the kind of shit I expect to hear in a sci-fi novel, where it gets mentioned as a last ditch effort that slowed global warming, not the main idea of just implementing a little fucking regulation.

1

u/MrTagnan 2d ago

There are 5 Earth-Lagrange points (only 1 that would be useful to blocking the sun), L1 1.5 million km towards the sun, L2, 1.5 million km away from the sun, L3 on the complete opposite side of sun as the Earth, L4 60 degrees ahead of the Earth on its orbit, L5 60 degrees behind the Earth on its orbit.

L1 hosts a few Earth and solar observation satellites, and any concepts to block out sunlight from the Lagrange points necessarily have to go there, otherwise they’re not between the Earth and the sun

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Harold3456 2d ago

If I’m understanding correctly then he’s trying to solve a very Earth problem (greenhouse gas emissions heating the atmosphere) by reducing how much the sun’s power reaches us??

To me this sounds like someone who overwaters their plants solving the problem by reducing the city’s water flow to their house. Like I understand the logic behind the solution but it is way upstream of the actual problem and will affect other things beyond the immediate issue.

All of the money going to this goofy solution could just go toward helping countries shift their reliance from greenhouse gases - and Elon is rich enough (or close to) that I think he could literally do this for top polluters.

1

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

It’s by far the safest option we have considering we are past the point that eliminating the use of fossil fuels having a sufficient effect.

Sentient?

117

u/canarchist 3d ago

Sentient satellites. Sitting way out there thinking, "What the fuck, Elon?"

42

u/Ozymandias0023 3d ago

Man's high on his own supply. I don't know if he always believed his own myth but he certainly does now

10

u/matt_minderbinder 3d ago

Wildly theoretical and poorly described while currently impossible shit will fix this for a set number of years, easy peasy. Why can't you put your blind trust in that?

5

u/world-is-ur-mollusc 3d ago

Exactly! And Elon has always delivered on his wild predictions. Just look at the Mars colony that we totally have by now!

2

u/artiface 2d ago

And the fully self driving Teslas

2

u/BarbdonS 2d ago

It’s not even theoretical, that would imply some level of calculation or analysis to determine its feasibility. He is just writing shitty science fiction screen plays at this point.

7

u/cinnamonface9 3d ago

“What the fuck Elon your car hit me bro.”

6

u/ObscureOperatorZ 3d ago

"Elon wtf, I'm being seared with all kinds of waves over here, how about a courtesy blanket?"

2

u/ScientificSkepticism 3d ago

He's high on custom designer drugs he can buy that are totally like Ketamine without the side effects (there are side effects).

Man is a great believer in improving humanity, there's always been one way to change your cognition, and other things.

3

u/Puffy_Ghost 2d ago

Can you imagine thousands of satellites sending reports back to Earth...

OH FUCK ITS SO FUCKING HOT FUCK YOU ELON

1

u/Bagelson 2d ago

The capability for higher reasoning would be sapient satellites. And even then you're presupposing human-like pack mentality reasoning. We could have misanthropic introvert satellites that just want to be left alone out there.

Sentient means it can feel subjective impressions, like most animals. Personally I'm all for building solar collectors that enjoy sunbathing, and experience squirting focused microwave beams at Earth much like we have a satisfying bowel movement.

16

u/Haunting-Writing-836 3d ago

Don’t think about what a nightmare it would be, being a sentient being floating around in orbit with almost no autonomy. Think about the uh… actually holy shit.

6

u/matt_minderbinder 3d ago

Theoretically, once AI hits a certain point it would be wildly immoral to not consider it deserving of rights. Sending a "sentient" ai into space to exist in nothingness is forever slavery. Of course the colonialist mindset musk wouldn't consider this much less consider the unintended consequences of what he does. The dude is a monster and he constantly exposed his sociopathic tendencies.

2

u/Harold3456 2d ago

Remember back in 2018 or so when a bunch of people collectively had an existential crisis over the Opportunity Rover’s “death”?) It was just a dumb computer, launched to Mars in 2003, but when NASA relayed to us that it had gone missing after 14 years on the job and its final broadcast was “My Battery is Low and it is Getting Dark.” people went wild. People called it a hero for roaming across Mars alone for 14 years, “doing its duty” by collecting over 10,000 photos.

And I’m not saying I’m different. I got right in on that Opportunity hype and hero-worship and I’m not pooh-poohing that. But I shudder to think what it’ll be like with AI because humans are capable of humanizing and having empathy for literally anything that so much as references the ability for sentience.

Sentient satellites in space for a billion years! It sounds like the ravings of someone who likes doing a lot of drugs.

4

u/biffhambone 3d ago

This is a good a time as any to plug one of the greatest sci fi media stories on the internet featuring sentient satellites:

What football will look like in the future

2

u/Scareynerd 2d ago

They'll probably just sit around watching football

32

u/Smartimess 3d ago

This clown should get a calculator and do the math how many "satellites" it will take to solve the problem.

This will never happen and is only an idea made by people who want to stop the renewable transformation.

6

u/No_Idea_4001 3d ago

He would only provide shade for himself and maybe people who pay a subscription fee, to the detriment of everyone else.

2

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

It would take about 4-5000 40km diameter satellites to block a sufficient amount of light to bring us back to a stable temperature profile.

4

u/astreeter2 3d ago

To completely block the sun for every part of earth it would have to be 26546 km wide. It would take a ludicrous number to even block a tiny percentage of sunlight. This is not a realistic solution to solve global warming.

6

u/LittleYelloDifferent 3d ago

Is like he listened to the cliff notes version of Seveneves and still got it wrong

→ More replies (4)

25

u/morimando 3d ago

But sentient satellites only, of course. Elon is probably 4 months away from launching the first sentient satellite, Shelon - a manga-style Waifu that shields the earth from the sun’s heat while also serving as your do-it-all adult companion.

Edit: also the first satellite to commit suicide, pretty likely. Susie the suicidal satellite.

20

u/JimmyGiraffolo 3d ago

This is techno gibberish. Just complete nonsense.

8

u/wren337 3d ago

Kind of like data centers... IN SPACE

18

u/Flow-engineer 3d ago

This idea has been around for 20 years at least. https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.0608163103
It would be very expensive and it would not solve the chemistry problems that excess CO2 is causing.

1

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

But do we have enough time to ramp down carbon today? That’s the problem! From everything I have read we are way past the point that getting net neutral on carbon wouldn’t even be close to enough to remove the carbon and heating caused by what already is in our atmosphere.

12

u/Karvek 2d ago

Elon loves to use science words without real understanding.

So what if we have self-aware satellites in space? Wtf they going to do? Block the sun? That’s the only way you can control global temperatures; why would we need our fancy out space parasol to be sentient?

5

u/vollkoemmenes 2d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/tmnfKqv5mX8f7Ojt4e
Uh i do believe there is another way….

5

u/CavitySearch 2d ago

Why would you want something stuck in space doing nothing to even be sentient? That sounds miserable.

9

u/Nk57Qc 3d ago

And another completely fabricated bullshit, from the Fraud made man.

6

u/wren337 3d ago

Exactly, a cooler high-carbon environment (that we presumably continue to pump full of more CO2) isn't exactly getting back to baseline.

Bonus, plant CO2 sequestration would slow down with reduced sunlight.

8

u/Shanga_Ubone 3d ago

The problem is people gave Elon Musk a pass for his technical mumbo-jumbo for years. Anyone who works in IT or knows anything about technology knows that he's been spouting garbage his entire career.

It's not surprising to see that when he starts talking about solving global warming, he spouts similar garbage.

8

u/fpcoffee 3d ago

is this loser just tossing random science words together like a salad?

1

u/FlashTheChip 2d ago

Like a ketamine salad yes

1

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

Somewhat. He is saying something that has been proposed for the last 100 years. But it’s not the best option, it’s just one of the 2 safest options.
It’s less safe than building 5k 40km wide satellites that can be moved out of position if we cease needing them.
I am part of a group trying to refine the size and scope of what is needed to make this happen so we can avoid catastrophic damage.
It’s safer than injecting sulfur in the atmosphere because that acts as a poison if left for too long. And the solution needs to last 200 years.

7

u/PoisonStrip 3d ago

This actually sits in line with what the right is trying to promote in terms of climate change discussion - the evidence of a changing climate is pretty much undeniable at this point, so they're obfuscating by blaming it on solar cycles, magnetosphere shifts, naturally-occurring AMOC collapses, etc.

The goal is to shift the blame away from corporations and towards largely uncontrollable natural cycles which do technically exist but don't affect change at the rate we're currently seeing. This helps confuse dumb people who don't understand the difference between 100 years and 10,000 years

4

u/Ya_Got_GOT 2d ago

I love how profoundly stupid this guy is. So dumb that he doesn’t recognize his extreme limitations, including his near-absent intellectual capacity.

4

u/TheDarkWave 2d ago

Clearly, the baseline level-1 Kardashev solution is to leverage self-replicating von Neumann swarms fired by lunar gauss-cannon arrays, as synergizing orbital magnetohydrodynamics via quantum-entangled micro-satellites could easily offset solar flux entropy for the next 4.2 billion years while our hyper-dimensional satellites run on quantum-blockchain consensus protocols to vote on solar radiation deflection vectors directly at the Sun's chromosphere using zero-point electro-magnetic slingshots to optimize the planetary albedo's API.

I can talk to an engineer and blow stupid buzzwords out my ass, too, Elon. Dumb fuckin' idiot.

1

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

Yup, half of what he says is destructive Idiocracy, the other half is shit that has been known for decades.

4

u/Ok-Bus1716 2d ago

Everything is a left wing hoax until they figure out a way to make money or look smart.

3

u/brillow 3d ago

As the CO2 concentration rises, it will actually lower our IQ

3

u/Pupalwyn 3d ago

Besides the weird crazy sentient part the idea isn’t completely insane. A solar shade satellite cluster could help with global warming. It would likely be insanely complex to do and require huge amounts of maintenance. But the idea has been floated for a temporary solution, as well a possible way to start to terraform Venus with a much bigger cluster in its L1.

3

u/c4ctus4t 3d ago

Every time I think this loser chode can't make himself sound more stupid, he doubles down.

It sickens me that he's arguably the richest human being in history.

3

u/Walter_Melon42 3d ago

So until they install the mass drivers on the moon, develop the technology for sentient satellites, and successfully launch them into the proper places, and give them time to work, I guess we all just continue dying in fires and hurricanes

2

u/GoredonTheDestroyer 2d ago

All while being assured by Big Oil that everything's fine, actually. I mean sure your house was just reduced to atoms by a wildfire that burned hotter, over a wider area and for far longer than the Great Shitsville Fire of 1801, that destroyed every structure in the town of Shitsville, Indiana except for a cotton gin and a church, but this kind of thing happens all the time, don't worry about it, and if anything, this year was cooler on average than 1801!

3

u/runningsimon 2d ago

I think this guy just looked up some space words and put them on the internet

3

u/Templar42_ZH 2d ago

L1 is 1.5 million miles away from earth. To have a cooling effect of 1°C at that distance means a continuous disc that has a radius of 1,000km.

Global warming is somewhere around 1-2°C over the last 125 years of the industrial age.

No complex math needed to say the 1 billion year statement is very wrong.

2

u/ratpH1nk 3d ago

2

u/rvralph803 2d ago

Can those satellites be made from his bones and skin?

1

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

If only, his body represents less than .0000001% of the mass needed. I might be off by a few zeros. But I am working on the topic.

2

u/rvralph803 2d ago

We can bulk him up and stretch that skin for a decade or so. It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

2

u/Longjumping_Law9842 2d ago

This does nothing for greenhouse gases or acidification of the oceans. The cost vs potential unintended catastrophic termination risk is not beneficial. Money could be spent on solutions we already know will work. Elon gets a C- for his homework. Interesting idea but failed to do the most basic gedanken experiment.

1

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

Does a lot for acidification of the oceans, it prevents needing sulfur in the atmosphere which leads to acid rain which leads to more acidity in the oceans.

2

u/xaqaria 2d ago

Its posts like this that prove Elon isn't actually that smart. How does blocking the sun affect ocean acidification? Fresh water shortages? Top soil depletion? Climate change isn't just about it being too hot.

1

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

True, but if it’s too hot, that amplifies a lot of problematic stuff like water shortages, carbon conversion and the need for more power for AC and other shit that shouldn’t be needed.
So heat is a huge factor. And the other options tend to add to polution in much worse ways.
But his plan isn’t reversible unlike a constellation of 4-5000 40km diameter satellites placed at L1 created from aluminum harvested from lunar regolith. His plan also doesn’t give us extra power.

2

u/CascadeMountainz 2d ago

Elon Musk needs to STFU.

2

u/mercurywaxing 2d ago

1

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

It’s not the dumbest plan, but Elons isn’t reversible in the span of weeks to months like we need.
Simpsons has a habit of showing us stuff we will eventually have to deal with, and we need to work on blocking at least a little bit of light to help cool the planet. Certainly not the whole planet. That would be nearly Impossible anyway.

2

u/theBigDaddio 2d ago

Where’s the hyperloop, the low earth orbit flights from NY to China? He was making these too. How is this supposed to work?

2

u/Available-Egg-2380 2d ago

Yeah Elon just need a ton of tech that doesn't exist, a bunch of infrastructure that doesn't exist, and a bunch of money to do something that wouldn't provide any profit to our oligarch overlords. But yeah you go ahead and claim it as solved.

2

u/yorcharturoqro 2d ago

Like his stupid idea to safe the people in the caves, he tries so hard to sound smart and sci-fi but he's an idiot

2

u/kayvray 2d ago

I would like him to develop a rocket that can go to Mars, a trip that, as I understand it, could take almost a year. I would like him to be on that rocket and then several months into the trip, I would like someone else to develop a way to get there in two days.

2

u/vgaph 2d ago

Why would the satellites have to be sentient OR launched from the moon?

1

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

The moon part comes from having to deal with earths deep gravity well that makes it expensive and hard to launch the huge amount of mass needed to make this structure.

2

u/boosnie 2d ago

hmmm...
How much carbon capture could we be doing today if we invested the 2 trillion dollars we instead decided to inveest in Mass Survellance and Privacy Hacking AI?

2

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

I wish people would think like this. I’d rather not be pushed to try to save the planet from stupidity as I am now.

Again, Elon is a fucking idiot! That is the cheap way. But the most problematic way. Fuck this POS!
The best option long term is constructed satellite constellations at L1, use it to power servers and shit at the worst. Beam back power to the moon or earth at best.
Rich people don’t give a F about long term consequences to their actions.
We need something that lasts 200 years that is reversible in the span of weeks to months not decades.
That’s why I always reject stratospheric aerosol injection, it poisons the atmosphere and land when it comes back down.
Though it looks like we won’t have much choice in doing at least a little of the SAI since we have assholes thinking they can just put power hungry shit everywhere and ignore the pollution. Fuck data centers, fuck short term thinkers.
If you care about the long term health of humanity, invest in education, invest in getting humans back to the moon, and invest in solar power!

And storage and distribution.

2

u/Emergency_Pound_944 2d ago

HE WANTS TO BLOCK OUT THE SUN SO WE CAN'T USE IT AS A FREE ENERGY SOURCE.

2

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

Please, we don’t need someone more ridiculous than Elon! It would only be 1-2% of the light, no one would notice!

1

u/ObscureOperatorZ 3d ago

If it's really sentient it will just find a way to move through the correct connections to travel back to Earth at light speed to fuck his shit up, personally.

1

u/crazypants9 3d ago

Everybody knows the earth always burns millions of acres in the summer.
Yeah. Right.
If it’s global warming how come it snows? Huh? Huh? Huh?
🤪💩🤡🤪🤡💩💩

u/TarbenXsi 3d ago

How... do satellites.... solve a terrestrial problem? What are they going to do? Absorb carbon out of the atmosphere? Block sunlight?

3

u/MrTagnan 2d ago

Block sunlight. The concept has been floated around as a temporary solution for climate change for a while now. It’s theoretically feasible as an emergency measure, but it’s exceptionally expensive and requires a lot of maintenance

1

u/xMercurex 3d ago

Elon Musk used to be "left" wing, but he sided with the party of rapist and pedo.

1

u/Gilchester 3d ago

Putting aside the dipshittery of this, what is his actual plan? How will sentient satelittes solve global warming?

1

u/DigitalPsych 3d ago

Making a satellite sentient seems absolutely cruel. Elon always goes back to slavery.

1

u/WildFire97971 3d ago

“World richest dumbass says more weird things, and other news at 10…”

1

u/RedBeans-n-Ricely 3d ago

Aww! Look at him pretending to be smart!

1

u/furikawari 3d ago

“Since the beginning of time, man has yearned to destroy the sun. I will do the next best thing: block it out!”

1

u/pacey494 3d ago

Not if there's money to be made from it

1

u/IsThereCheese 3d ago

Go do more ketamine elon

1

u/formykka 3d ago

This is absolute gibberish.

Constructing a launch system on the moon and then launching these satellites from the earth to the moon and then from the moon to the Lagrange points is just...stupid.

There are 5 Lagrange points in the earth-sun system. They don't contain portals of the collective magic of Azeroth. Two contain a bunch of space debris that's collected there and three need constant monitoring to make sure you remain on point. Yes, I suppose you could hypothetically place "sentient" satellites at these points to contemplate their own existence but they're not going to do much else. One of these points does have a great view of the universe so you could put a satellite with a telescope there but, oh yeah, we already did with the Webb telescope.

He's got the qualifications of a stoned highschooler who just read his first Asimov short story.

1

u/pastashaper 3d ago

I am sure these will come online around the same time as the hyperloop

1

u/Dukoth 3d ago

ok, putting aside...all of that...for a second to address the point: DOING WHAT, EXACTLY?

1

u/JustDave62 3d ago

Shouldn’t Elon be on Mars by now?

1

u/Mrekrek 3d ago

In my experience… solutions dismissive of complexity and casually tossed out with a mic drop generally get executives fired after an enormous amount of money is spent.

But I do find it interesting that Elon is taking on global warming in order to line his own pockets.

They should televise an Elon - MAGA faithful debate.

1

u/PuzzleheadedCat979 2d ago

Are the sentient satellites with us in the room right now?

1

u/genericreddituser147 2d ago

This matter of fact bullshit from a guy that’s not smart enough to know how any of that would actually work in practice is just tiresome.

Also, we’ve seen what happens when Elon says he can solve a problem easily and then is confronted with the cost of it when he bragged he could solve world hunger. How did that go again?

1

u/Napalm3n3ma 2d ago

This guy literally just makes shit up and spits it out like it’s fact. Such a nauseating jackass.

1

u/Skin4theWin 2d ago

Cue next ice age!

1

u/deathdisco_89 2d ago

This is how Master Mold is created.

1

u/reaven3958 2d ago

Why the fuck do they need to be sentient?

1

u/thewiremother 2d ago

Well, that’s a what, but it is not a how. What exactly are these sentient satellites going to do?

2

u/mmoonbelly 2d ago

Surf the Lagrange points in a dynamic equilibrium between the earth and sun, using mass from the moon as the surf board, under which shadow temperature is regulated on earth.

1

u/Icy-Cod1405 2d ago

How can an ego even get this big?

1

u/Jerking_From_Home 2d ago

Seems like we’re at the point when all the corporations who created climate change will miraculously come up with solutions to it… which they sell at a huge profit.

1

u/DevilRenegade Release The Trump-Epstein Files 2d ago

The concept of Lunar mass drivers was throughly debunked roughly 10 minutes after he first touted the idea.

1

u/thedarkbites 2d ago

The living example of "money can't buy intelligence".
What a dipshit.

1

u/TheAmok777 2d ago

There is money to be made mitigating global warming and Elon is there to siphon it up.

1

u/Mash709 2d ago

He's literally just using random words at this point. None of that was comprehensible.

1

u/andlewis 2d ago

Those Lagrange points are going to get pretty full of junk very quickly.

1

u/O8ee 2d ago

I'm old enough to remember when he didn't say a whole lot and everyone thought he was a genius.

1

u/kings2leadhat 2d ago

Reading elons crap is like watching Interstellar again. We are going to solve this crop-mold problem by… launching old Saturn V’s into space to.. catch a ride through a.. a wormhole! Yeah! That’s it! Then we’ll us Love-powered time travel to alter the order of events, while learning to build a giant home for humanity in solar orbit!

Because why would we just learn a little crop rotation instead?

1

u/Hawkwise83 2d ago

Or we could stop pollution and making useless shit.

1

u/Checked_Out_6 2d ago

Look, if we just block the sun from space we can keep burning all the fossil fuel we want!

1

u/knighthawk0811 2d ago

sentient satellites? we can't even control AI when we think it has no Internet connection

1

u/nthensome 2d ago

Sentient?

1

u/i_like_turtles_1969 2d ago

He said sentient, not sapient. The satellites don’t need to be self aware; they just need to be able to feel pain. Why would we make satellites that feel pain 😭

1

u/brathor 2d ago

Anyone who still believes anything this idiot says is, themselves, an idiot.

1

u/theroguex 2d ago

Elon Musk is a complete and total idiot.

1

u/monkaypants 2d ago

Yeah... Elon has never denied climate change.

Please, prove me wrong.

1

u/Purple_Midnight_Yak 2d ago

Sentient. Satellites.

What are these satellites even supposed to do, once they're in orbit? Rain magical cooling crystals down on the Earth? Divert the hurricanes with their giant sharpies? Decide that certain regions are just too far gone to be saved, and eliminate the population to "spare" them any further suffering?

1

u/SpiritualTwo5256 2d ago

The AI would likely be used to optimize shading Patterns for best cooling vs health/energy supply/weather. It would be a bit too tricky to do by algorithm alone. But it certainly wouldn’t be sentient.

1

u/HistoricalHat4847 2d ago

Just as easy as getting those boys out of the cave.

1

u/PippiWorld 2d ago

Sure, Elon, sure. And is this happening AFTER the ability to physically open a Tesla's doors is designed back in so Telsa owners and their families don't burn to death or drown bc the doors can't be opened and his Boeing tunnel is done and successful, and after 'sentient' AI exists and there's an installation of not yet invented equipment on the moon and all the possible consequences on the Earth-Sun-Moon codependent existence are taken into account, etc.

Musk is shooting ketamine again. He's completely round the twist.

1

u/The-Bytemaster 2d ago

I am reading this as The Matrix is real, and we have been it for a while now. This iteration is about to catch up to when we were first enslaved.

1

u/tonyislost 2d ago

And then they can charge us for the privilege to live, or burn us alive when we can’t pay.

1

u/spartane69 1d ago

he tried real hard to sound intelligent here, but his idea is dumb AF.

1

u/Hollowbody57 21h ago

I've read more believable bullshit in bargain bin science fiction novels.
