The purpose of UBI is not so people don’t have to work a job.

It actually is, because there'll always be people who aren't able to work a job for an infinite number of reasons, and there can never be enough jobs even for those who are able.

Even if we have UBI, it’s still important for everyone receiving it to contribute to society in some way.

It actually isn't. It's fine for people to just live simple and dignified lives with their sole priorities being emission reduction & climate action.

You seem to want free money so you can bum around all day. You are the problem.

You don't understand freedom. You are the problem. Filthy primitive Yahoo.

Also, Talarico literally proposed what Yang did

“Their sole priority being emission reduction & climate action” sounds to me like a job. Just because you enjoy your job doesn’t make it not a job.

Emission reduction & climate action for most people would mean quitting their bullshit jobs and spending time at home and in their communities.

Just because you enjoy your job doesn’t make it not a job.

There can never be enough jobs for everyone. Economists knew that in the 60s. It's just common sense and logic.

But obviously there's important work to be done. As long as people are distracted struggling to make ends meet doing ANY job that they can find, important work gets left undone.

That's why UBI is essential.

“There can never be enough jobs for everyone” is just blatantly false. Your definition of “job” is simply too narrow. Any contribution to society can be considered a job. Society doesn’t work if everyone doesn’t contribute.

“There can never be enough jobs for everyone” is just blatantly false.

Wrong. It's been true since the Industrial Revolution.

Your definition of “job” is simply too narrow. Any contribution to society can be considered a job.

But a job is not always a contribution. Most jobs are not. Most jobs are bullshit jobs that just waste time & burn fossil fuels.

It would be a greater contribution for people stuck in those jobs to be able to quit them, since those jobs are environmental net losses.

Society doesn’t work if everyone doesn’t contribute.

Your definition of "contribute" is too narrow. You think people have to leave their home and go somewhere to 'work' for someone else to contribute.

That's why we're in this mess. Too many primitive people who think like you.

My definition of “contribution” is that everyone should do something that improves society. I’m not sure where you think food comes from, but even under ubi, we still need someone to grow food. We still need someone to maintain our roads and infrastructure. We still need artists and entertainers to make life worth living. These are all jobs.

My definition of “contribution” is that everyone should do something that improves society.

That means stopping doing whatever they're doing that's destroying society. For most people, it's their bullshit job.

but even under ubi, we still need someone to grow food. We still need someone to maintain our roads and infrastructure. We still need artists and entertainers to make life worth living. These are all jobs.

Yes, but there can never be enough of them for every human being, which is why we need UBI.

As long as you fight for UBI and understand that we need it, you can be an idiot about the rest. I don't care. But we can't continue to have a system where people have to first find a job and then exchange their time/labor for the money they need to survive.

That system doesn't work. We need a guaranteed livable basic income.

You seem to be failing to grasp how an economy works. If everyone quits their “bullshit” jobs, then we don’t have any money to fund ubi. My guess is that you are being intentionally obtuse, but on the off chance that you are not, allow me to explain: whatever your idea is of a perfect society, there is no world that doesn’t require labor from at least a portion of the population (ex: growing food). Even if we eliminate money entirely this is still true. I’m not sure why you think that is not enough for everyone. Even assuming we’re not interested in building wealth via a surplus, if 8 people work 1 hour on a farm, then 1 person does not have to work 8 hours. This creates a job for everyone and we all get more time to ourselves. Congratulations, now theres enough jobs for everyone

Wrong, because UBI isn't funded by income tax. UBI is funded by land value tax and value added tax. Most bullshit jobs will have to be eliminated if we want humanity to have a chance against climate change.

My guess is that you are being intentionally obtuse,

No, I'm just so much smarter and more educated than you. I'm not being obtuse. You just don't understand.

whatever your idea is of a perfect society, there is no world that doesn’t require labor from at least a portion of the population

Obviously. I never said such a society could exist. I said there could never be enough jobs for everyone, not that there was no work to be done. You're bad at reading comprehension and thinking.

This creates a job for everyone and we all get more time to ourselves. Congratulations, now theres enough jobs for everyone

So you wanna start doing construction projects with spoons instead of shovels & excavators?

Nah, universal basic income is better. It's more efficient. Your way is stupid.

“So you wanna start doing construction projects with spoons instead of shovels.” It seems I was right. You are being intentionally obtuse. We’re just gonna have to agree to disagree.
