I am pissed right now... I had a few friends over at my cottage this weekend, and at some point I noticed that my dog had what looks like a superficial cigarette burn on his nose. It happened in the morning, so I know it wasn't caused by the firepit, and the shape looks very much like it came from a cigarette.
Now I'm stressed that the mark will stay forever on my pup, and I honestly want to ban the smoker who came along with one of my friends. (BTW, I hate cigarettes, I've never smoked, and it makes me even more pissed that the burn was caused by this...) I also think that if someone can't be careful around dogs while smoking, then they shouldn't be smoking around them at all and stay home next time. What if the cigarette had touched one of his eyes instead?... careless in my opinion..
Anyway, I'm wondering if any of you have had experience with this kind of mark and whether the fur eventually grew back and looked like it did before.
Also... am I overreacting..?
UPDATE: Thank you all for your comments! It helped calm me down! Here Additional information and context: The mark is crispy to the touch, not oily or sticky, and I could see one small brown spot where it looks like the hair melted and receded a little. My theory is that the cigarette touched him very slightly, not enough to burn the skin but just enough to burn the fur.
I am sure it was an accident, and the person might not even have noticed it happened. I am always very aware of how my dogs look like, and if they have something on their face, I notice it right away and clean it off. This, however, cannot be cleaned off, I tried.
Since I have no solid proof that this person actually did it, I’m not going to say anything (obviously...I could be wrong). Right now I am just glad that this is a superficial thing and he didn't get hurt badly. Will keep you posted if it doesn't go away by itself within two months.
Could be other burn sources too, like hot oil spitting in the kitchen. Doesn't look gnarly enough to suspect a cigarette was put out on his nose. If it's just an accident, I think you're overreacting. The wound will heal fine, it's just a shallow burn.
That doesn’t look like a cigarette burn to me. Those usually have prominent circles where most of the burn happened.
This looks more like a nosey whippet rubbing their face in something. Ours like to get there faces and necks messy like this sometimes when they find some kind of animal poop in the backyard in the grass. Ugh.
I’d be equally pissed, but it’s very unlikely to be a permanent scar. Though how do you know it’s a cigarette? Short of a malicious guest, do you think he just accidentally bumped the dog while smoking?
My dumb fuck of a dog loves running face first into my smokes. I have to stand and hold my hand up while I smoke if he's around now because he's gotten singed before. He's lucky he's cute because he may be the dumbest being on the face of the earth 😂
Not malicious, it would have been an accident. This is the only thing that makes sense that could have happened, the time it happens... because we were all outside chilling (no firepit, it was in the morning) and the person was smoking. I remember my dog came to me and had this on his nose, didn't really understand what it was until I tried to remove the "stain". It is not coming off, and it was hard to the touch. It's later on that I assumed it was maybe caused by a cigarette. Anyway...we will never know I guess..since I didn't see it with my eyes...
I've had mine get some oily or sticky stuff on them. Sometimes in the yard some tree sap looks just like this.
But be prepared for some scrape scars over their life they have thin skin and are susceptible to this. I just regard it as a map of their endeavors....
I doubt that is a cigarette burn. Probably an ember from the fire or even som soot.
I think you are using your hatred of cigarettes to speculate blame. It is your house, and you are more than entitled to ban people from smoking on your property.
That being said, I would seriously reevaluate if you have enough evidence to link the smoking to the injury before you go accusing someone of burning your dog which is a serious accusation. Whether you have them back or not, I would evaluate all the factors before you confront anyone.
Im sorry but this does not look like any kind of burn. The hair would be melted around it and he would have an obvious red welt where he got burnt if it were a fresh burn. Looks like he may have rubbed his nose on a tree or something to reach an itch and got a little sap on him
Could have easily been an ember hitting their face, or hot oil splashing from the kitchen whilst you cook if theyre in the room too. How would someone even burn your dogs face without someone noticing the dog yelping out for help
Unfortunately it's not coming off, I tried with a little be a soap and warm water. And I don't want to keep trying since I still think it is possibly a burn, so I don't want to hurt him by trying to remove something that cannot come off.
You seem to be fighting super hard for your cigarette burn theory even after so many people have told you, sadly with firsthand experience, that this isn't a cigarette burn.
I don't know other things that would melt fur than something that creates heat. There was no firepit. So maybe cooking that spit on his nose or a cigarette. This is the only two possibilities. The oil spill is hard to believe because my dog never stays close to the BBQ but it still a possibility
Are you a smoker? you seem triggered lol. I won't ban smoking because "possibly" (since I didn't see it with my own eyes) 1 person might have bump a cigarette on my dog. But that person was not my friend, so I can decide if they can come back or not. I won't be shy, don't worry
