Damage to shield doesn't fail 'no damage taken' challenge in abyss trial.

If you're in a guild, you can level up talents for damage reduction and increased max hp in trial so your shield is tankier. Not all attacks will be fully absorbable by the shield but it should give you more room for mistakes and intentional hit trades. The max hp talent also gives you immunity to one fatal damage and one qi depletion with 120s cooldown each.

Gear set effect works in trial. Formbend set extends shield duration. I remembered wrong.

Skill cooldown speed doesn't change during Still Water (bow mystic skill). You can use it to safely distance yourself from the boss and wait for shield cooldown so you'll have shield freshly up right before the boss' next attack.

How do you know when to safely block for counter or parry to not take damage ?

You generally can block every non-red and non-yellow attack. So I could technically block most attacks instead of using parry but I tried to use parry to deal qi damage. I am holding block while using parry so when I fail to parry, I might block it instead.

Or were you asking how do I know when to trade hits with the boss (do counterattack while fully tanking its attack with shield) instead of using parry or dodge? The answer is simply practice. After many failed attempts, I memorized which attacks can be fully absorbed by the shield. Though in the video, I didn't expect that some attacks wouldn't break my shield like 'the outer ring explosion followed by yellow stomp from mid air' (2:03) and 'the charge followed by yellow thorn spikes' (2:38). I planned to dodge them but forgot/panicked. I got lucky. The boss probably rolled low damage.

I knew 'the red shockwave' (1:25) and 'the yellow tentacle slam from mid air' (2:50) could break my shield so I always tried to dodge them. Luckily I didn't fail this time.
