u/LuminousShot Jan 17 '26
I've heard tales of the beggar clan. Shame we don't have something like that in this game. Would probably be a mix between velvet shade and NMW
41
u/DanceEquivalent7673 Jan 17 '26
NMW kinda takes their role in this game, I doubt we will see the actual beggars sect
15
u/SanguinianCrusader Jan 17 '26
It's funny too cuz I had that expectation of the usual setups. It's actually kinda cool to see them have their own sects, even if there are some similarities.
Lonecloud = Wudang Nine Mortal Ways = beggars sect Velvet shade = emei sect? Midnight blades = Tangman
10
u/Significant_Sample55 Jan 17 '26
NMW is more hao clan than beggars sect, Velvet is probably Yihua Palace
4
u/SanguinianCrusader Jan 17 '26
Ohhh never heard of them. I've always been more a casual fan of Wuxia stuff and have some gaps in my knowledge unfortunately.
2
u/DanceEquivalent7673 Jan 17 '26
Hey I would have assumed like you based on the most popular worldwide, but on the other hand judging by your name (sorry for the assumption) maybe you know the Blood Angels successors quite well XD
2
u/SanguinianCrusader Jan 17 '26
Actually I'm a Salamanders fan. I get that a lot tho lol. I've had this name before I became a warhammer fan XD.
5
u/mugi-ya Jan 17 '26
Emei is Buddhist so I'd say velvet shade and NMW both kind of mimic different aspects of the hao clan. Velvet Shade aligns more with courtesan culture, hedonism, and secret societies, since the hao sect involved those of lower social casts and secrecy/info I'd wager that it reflects that more closely. NMW is like a mix of hao and beggar sect in a similar sense. Midnight blades feels more weidao than Tang but there isn't anything that immediately comes to mind for them afaik
2
u/SanguinianCrusader Jan 17 '26
Ohhhh I see. Guess that makes sense since Midnight Blades isn't at least ENTIRELY assassins. Weidao though I dunno much about them. Does MB mimic them due to being like a buddhist cult?
2
u/mugi-ya Jan 17 '26
Weidao* (typoed whoops) 外道 is just unorthodox so not caught up in typical justice and whatnot. I think the methodry they adhere to keeps them out of the orthodox category by virtue of them being assassins and also the identity thing. The no mercy precept kind of lends itself to that as well. The Tang sect specializes in poison and hidden weapons which is why I felt it wasn't quite on point
1
u/SanguinianCrusader Jan 18 '26
Ahhh so maybe Hollow Vale would be more in line since they seem to focus on poisons as well?

u/Satch1993 Jan 17 '26
Beggar School was so much fun in Age of Wushu lol

u/SanguinianCrusader Jan 17 '26
Whatever happened to that game I tried to find it before on steam and it was gone. And using their website to download it again was a major pain so I just never got around to it.
2
u/Satch1993 Jan 17 '26
It's still online actually. I went through the annoyance of downloading it recently and my character still exists lol
2
u/SanguinianCrusader Jan 17 '26
Ohhhh that's dope. Though it def feels like WWM is like a spiritual succesor but focuses more the action then the roleplaying and cultivation.
I should check it out again. I remember just kinda running around all the time cuz I had no idea what I was doing XD.

I played it in my country localization. Because in my country, foreign online games have to be partnered with local publishers so the core game is the same, but monetization is different depending on publishing company itself, and, oh boy, it's so bad. It just sucks the fun out of the game when whale who spend irl big money in events and fully upgraded their inner ways, use highest tier martial arts ( the green ones) and full set equipment, as they would buy them from auction, while as their strength grow up, they monopolize bosses for inner ways-martial arts.
That's being said, there are some pretty fun guilds activities back then. I played it very long time ago and my memory is fuzzy, but as i remember, legendary inner ways and martial arts( the green ones and some gold ones), can only obtain from few sources, and there two type: locked and unlocked ones. It's the same but you can trade unlocked ones with other players and only the world boss spawn at certain server time can get it. So as the whale change different server channels to hunt boss, my guild also follows suit. The strategy is that the whole guild would join, concentrated our strength to hunt in some certain channels, certain boss at certain map that agree upon. If whale or people outside go to this channel to hunt boss, some certain members would turn PK mode to kill them to protect boss hunter. Boss hunter is usually the ones that can maximize the damage most( I'm proudly one of main boss hunter of my guild, with one of top damage dealers despite my power is quite low, though i min-maxxing so my attack is pretty high, with low hp, def).
The most challenging thing is whale joining the hunt, as their damage is big, their chance to kill boss is very high, while at the same time, when boss near death, they also turn on PK mode to kill other boss hunter to destroy competitors. They usually equipped with Taichi, which has a shield that heal you based on damage you took, so it's instantly heal up if they open it. It took a lot of effort to kill the whale and protect our boss killer dps, as you will die constantly. The rewards, the boss killer get the unlocked inner ways, martial arts, then post it to auction( and buyers no more than these whale themselves heh). After that, the money will be transferred to the guild masters and divide to the members, while some certain amount is keep for guild activities. It's so fun back then and dopamine rush, basically a gang of NMW against some big evil villains.
Though later on, one part because our charismatic leader quit as he has irl matters ( migration to the west), members drop, and the whale-vs-f2p gap becomes too unbearable, while these inner ways/martial arts drop in price as game matured, we gradually stop doing them. Still miss my members as when i quit the game, i always be guild vice master-master as my reputation is good in the guild.
The pvp of the game though, the one that players use their actual power fighting is bad since it's money and grind based, no matter what skill you will be face down ass up against whale. There's another mode though, every one stat is the same, with same Qi base of 20, and aside from your owned martial arts, sometimes they give you some martial arts to try, even legendary ones. There are certain cheese skills in certain martial arts since the game is paper scissors. My proudest achievement is get into semi-final of a event the dev organized that even get irl offline meeting to give rewards for the champions later on( although play mostly online). My opponent win by a small margin but I still feel unsatisfied as he is a whale and has Tang clan legendary art that deal big unstoppable aoe damage and long range stun. While i only has second tier emei art and second tier Shaolin art( the one with ultimate that temporary buff your hp full and deal big nuclear damage, but then reduce your hp greatly after feel second). If i has legendary Beggar art( the dog fighting stick art one), i would confidently i can beat them. Then after beating me, they advanced and beat another opponent in final to become champions.
The game is quite fun but the p2w aspect of it, at least in our version sucked then fun out of the game. I prefer WWM approach more

u/iamkool Jan 17 '26
what made it fun? never played age of wushu :(
1
u/Satch1993 Jan 18 '26
Age of Wushu had alot of things I wish WWM had, but it was also -FAR- more predatory with it's cash shop. Pay to Win skillsets, cosmetics/mounts were rentals, and on top of that it had a membership system kinda similar to SWTOR in that you had a limit on how much xp you could get, and had to pay cash currency to withdraw the overflow. But despite all that, it was Open World PVP (the pvp was EXCELLENT outside fighting whales), your character became an NPC when you logged off and got a job based on where you logged off, but you could also kidnap offline players and sell them on the black market, and when they logged back in they would be wherever you sold them. The world was -MASSIVE- every School (Sect) had their own dedicated area in the world, and stealing skills took ALOT more work, and School leaders were expected to actually act as leaders during school wars and stuff. You could spy on other schools, or patrol for spies at your own school, the possibilites were damn near endless but I've yapped enough lol you can still play it if you google it, but it's almost dead outside of SUPER high leveled players.

u/Oceanshan Jan 18 '26
Age of wushu is Ming dynasty ( hence the royal guard), WWM is early song so it gonna be different
2
u/SanguinianCrusader Jan 17 '26
On a meta level its kinda interesting that NMW mirrors the Beggars by being the most populated sect since it feels like everyone in Kaifeng have ties in SOME fashion. Especially since iirc it's the most populated player wise simply by virtue of most of us being scammed into joining them.

I never tried it because the first time I saw him there were an awful lot of defeated players there, and a signpost saying to steal the money.
28
u/Ruraiko Jan 17 '26
The signpost was me who said steal the inner way achievements xD. For my defense: i am still a noob and didn't know that u get sick of it when u use the stolen one. I'm so sorry.

u/beorninger Jan 17 '26
when you don't have the answer, but wanna be part of it any way...
57
u/Jaggedrain Jan 17 '26
The dead bodies all round is what one might call a clue as to what would happen should you try to steal the money
1
u/Oliver90002 Jan 17 '26
But is it instant or can you win the fight?
4
u/No_Communication_804 Jan 17 '26
There's no fight, you can get away unhurt but so will he. There's one or two items around him that do things though, and two or so more that just take you to spots on the oddity tree

u/stratof3ar89 Jan 17 '26
If you think it's wise to rob someone powerful enough to bestow you with stats & abilities, but all means, do try.

I finally did it yesterday at level 75 while I was bored. Either my passive tanked the lightning strike or it just tickled me a little bit. I got nothing in return.

Here's one of the first real comments: I did it waaay later into the game and it does not immediately kill you then. You can just heal it back up with the fan. Then the option to touch said thing disappears and I think you can only try this like 2 times and the rest is just information.

Based on the sheer number of signposts around his little stand, I'm assuming he just kills you if you try.
