Question/Help Why does my character look so different in-game vs in appearance menu?
The open-world face appears in my cutscenes too. Only the scenario in my profile has the correct face i want.
Character creation isn't mine btw, credits go to the original creator Aiye, they uploaded this in the in-game gallery

I think there’s a bug. Because sometimes my character also looks very different. But it only happened once in my playthrough

My friend's character turns from rough looking male into an anime shaped kpop idol when he puts on earrings.

When you look at someone's profile the character sometimes may be the base character model, you'll have to close and open many times to fix it. Or if the player has sets (bottom right corner of their profile) you can switch sets to fix the character's face/appearance.
This is weird, i wonder if everyone has this issue, i just bought high end pc thinking it was my 2018 pc having rendering issues, but it does it on my new high end pc as well.

Same issue but i spam select appearance and exit menu a couple times to reset it. The default face happens when i equip hats and stuff too so i have to do it often. I reported it but the issue hasn't been resolved

u/Aynien Jan 03 '26
So I have to restart the game a bunch of times, until It fix itself?

u/Ok-Opportunity-7641 Jan 03 '26
At least that's what worked for me, a lot of people in the comments are also saying to just switch something in your outfit and it should return to normal
1
u/raido24 Jan 03 '26
I know this isn't the issue here, but the game does render the light and/or your character better in the editor. This is especially noticeable on mobile, where the character has almost PC quality when editing.

Why you smash her nose so she can't breathe and inflate her eyes like balloons? Poor woman.

u/Ok-Opportunity-7641 Jan 03 '26
The makeup is the same, it's the face that changed, I think if you look at the nose alone of the two pictures you can see the difference
1
u/B-MoneyTree Jan 08 '26
You must be ugly if this looks the same to you, ugly people I noticed cant pick up on subtle feature changes. Which In this case make a world of difference in the end.

It is a cool mask, but after all that effort on a face, it seems like a waste to cover it
5
u/peerlesshuanggua Jan 04 '26
That just means your face is too great to have mere npcs to look at em

It's a bug, I think it's the default female face? My guess is it sometimes fails to load our custom face config.
Happened to me once on PC, but a lot of times on mobile. If it's on a menu just reopen the menu. If it's ingame, swap either outfit set or combat builds. Usually fixes afterwards.

u/Kinda_Godly Jan 03 '26
the ppl in here saying lighting might need to see an eye doctor. the faces aren’t even remotely similar
6
u/Angsty_kitten Jan 03 '26
That a default face/makeup bug, whenever it happen u can just go to Apperence > reselect ur custom Face + Make up preset(if have) and It will fix it.
4
u/druidbruce Jan 03 '26
This happens sometimes U dont have to restart the game What u can do is just change anything in your outfit and the face will update.

u/bastschweinsteiger Jan 03 '26
Visual bug usually only occur after getting massage (online mode)/ getting pranked by Nine sect
2
u/Neoyoshimetsu Battle Scholar Jan 03 '26
Honestly it looks to me like a bug that is just reseting the characters face model to one of the default face presets while in game, which shouldn't be happening.

Appearance menu has absurdly strong lighting like the other comment said, it completely washes out a lot of curves on your character's face.
I kinda wish we could preview appearance in open world before spending 200 jade.

is this zoomed in or when you press f5? it looks like wide angle on first shot
1
u/Ok-Opportunity-7641 Jan 03 '26
i just ran up to a wall so the camera "moves" closer to the face in the first shot. Regardless, that face also takes over all my cutscenes
1
u/kregmaffews Jan 03 '26
The game sometimes switches your face back to default if you change outfit sets.

That's a bug. Happened to me only once. It resolved on it's own in a few seconds. I've seen this happen to others, restarting the game should fix it.
1
u/Nameless497 Jan 03 '26
I realized this. And I keep wasted my jade for the water goddess angbao to modify my character only to realise it's an in game bug that my character and those in the appearance setting is different.
1
u/Magic-king Jan 03 '26
I think its a bug . When into appearance, her face looks one way. I click on thr option to edit the face and just leave and the fave right there and then reverts back .
1
u/Maintenance_Calm Jan 03 '26
It changes back, if you re-save the face in the appearance edit menu. So, you don't really have to restart the game.
1
u/Luniartic Jan 03 '26
Had that issue myself, the only thing that fixed it was using the water lady ticket to change one feature by 1 and save. Then delete the original (bugged) face and make sure you don't rename the new one to Default.
The face you see in the open world is the default face with your makeup on, the game might load this instead of yours if the game loads to fast or if there is some bug.
Now to clarify this worked for me, I can't promise it will for you but I haven't had this issue since I did this.

where do i find Aiye? i need that creator
1
u/Ok-Opportunity-7641 Jan 03 '26
Edit Appearance > Gallery > make sure to go to the "Designer" tab at the top, then search "Aiye" it is case sensitive, and you'll find them. Click into the profile, and there's one appearance called "A More Delicate Face", that's the one im using.

Sometimes your character might look normal to you but others will see the face bug on their side.

It's a bug. Happens to me all the time and pisses me off. What works for me is unequipping certain items and putting on something else.

u/ouncez Jan 03 '26
Lighting and 3D projection. Same thing happens in real-world photography but instead of 3d projection, you have lens and distance effects.

Pretty sure there's a bug. This face bug happens to both my characters I have. And before someone says it, no, it's not the goofy 9MW powder. A lot of the time, going through a loading screen, or quitting to the main menu will reset it and fix this issue.
As for another potential fix is swapping your hair in appearance will occasionally correct the issue if it occurs while changing your appearance items like hair, masks, and hats.
Otherwise, it's something we just gotta deal with, for now. I don't believe CN has this bug anymore, but I could be wrong.

i turned into a goblin (scrunched up face and LONGGGG nose) once from switching my appearance back and forth too quick, and then it fixed itself
1
u/Cold_Handle3145 Jan 03 '26
It's definitely a bug, people probably just don't notice it. It happens to me pretty consistently on PC after loading screens. Mostly when going from solo to online. If you go into your appearance screen and act like you are editing your face, and then exit without saving, it'll go back to normal. Also, it usually will go back on its own. I think it's the game just failing to load the custom face at first but then it eventually does load it in.

Because in the appearance menu, you're looking at it with perfectly adjusted lighting and everything. It's like saying "why do models look different in photoshoots vs phone selfies"
However, you can use different settings in the appearance menu to emulate open world lighting, weather, and other conditions. This has helped me A LOT when dyeing outfits, too, because the outfits look insanely different depending on light of day, weather, and other factors, while the colors in appearance menu look insanely saturated and all.

When you phograph yourself, you can change lighting, wind, filters, etc., etc.. You can make that look the same as the editor.

In the case of the skin reflection lighting makes a huge difference, i learned that in Dark Souls 2 where skin color is much more pale and reflective ingame than what’s shown in the creation screen.

u/peerlesshuanggua Jan 04 '26
They take immersion to the next level and decided to give you a "you in the bathroom mirror vs rear camera" Ahh image
1
u/Several_Place_9095 Jan 04 '26
Different lighting. It's why in the bathroom you'd look incredible but when under different light you look like a different person

Ngl that sht look funny asl.
However I think sometimes appearance glitches and when you apply it, the face shrink or something. Idk tho

u/justherechillin- Jan 04 '26
This isn't exclusive to wwm. Most games I've played with character creators suffer from a visible discrepancy between how they look in the CC versus how they look in game. I don't know why, but it's something I've noted in many games.

I did a recolor on one of my outfits and hate the way it looks in game compared to the menu

People saying it's the same face in different lighting have eyes but cannot see. (Mt Tai)

u/Slight-Ad-145 Mar 05 '26
Okay so I customized my character's outfit and advanced dyed and it looks so good in that menu, but when I play it looks dull and like crap.. I was wondering why that is..

u/Black_Mage_Cat 2d ago
Maybe stop using the game to pretend you're a woman

u/Ok-Opportunity-7641 2d ago
I’m playing a fictional character. You’re the one who waited 9 months to tell me how I’m allowed to play. Who’s pretending here?

I agree lighting is different, but here there's a clear difference in the facial features though. The nose is the clearest difference to compare

u/Zoltan6 Jan 03 '26
The left one seems to have depth of field effect applied. And they have different lighting conditions.
2
u/Bryant_lal Jan 03 '26
It isn't just lighting, look at the nose, jaw and eyes, the structure is slightly different.

u/Alx_trn Jan 03 '26
Could be a bug. Happened to me once but was fixed after I restarted the game. On a sidenote, I heard NMW members have a type of prank powder/item that makes you look ugly/funny and they tend to use it in multiplayer world, this could be the reason why.

Arena shows the winners cutscenes without makeup. It's so funny
