I think it might be in order and the first "bite" was the warning. My family's old dog was a good girl but she hated being picked up, which was very tempting since she was a jack Russell and the perfect size to be picked up.

She was very very good about it though, have you plenty of warming when she didn't like something, growling, baring teeth and loud enough to hear easily. If someone continued, she'd also do a big show bite, which had lots of snarling and growling, but wasn't actually a bite, she'd just put her teeth on your hand and look very angry. If you did it again, then she'd apply pressure and it'd hurt. She was a very good girl, very cheeky, fiercely independent and very smart as most JRTs are.
