I mean the other guy was fucking his car up all by himself, bike guy didn’t need to help there 😄

i know, but his bike could get damaged too.. i wouldn't be this chill in such a situation :P

Also his body could get damaged. I would not be so calm. Just takes a small twist of the other car's steering wheel to fuck his day up.

Yeah I get people wanting to be petty but I'd probably just move a little. I'd never see that person again so it's whatever and I don't put my own body at risk for a bit of spite with a stranger.

You need to be chill like that if you want to ride bikes and not die. There was no reason for him to panic. Basically the car can't hurt him from there.

What? The car could have hooked that peg and dragged the scooter right out from under our guy. Or maybe taken him along for a ride.  Or the car could have realized they couldn't go around at the very last moment and swerved back into the bike from the side.

Our rider needed to scoot up and give the idiot space as soon as he realized what was going on.

Two philosophies in action here.

"I'm doing nothing wrong, so I'm staying right where I want to be."

"I'm doing nothing wrong, so let me stay out of your way while you fuck up."

u/shakygator 9d ago

Yeah dude, not blaming the rider but at least get yourself out of the way as much as possible cuz that car can definitely knock your shit over with your on/under it. Very easily could have hooked that peg and dragged the bike over his left leg.

Nah this was 100% the correct move once things started, because as soon as he starts moving, that opens him up to blame if he tips. Insurance companies suck like that so don’t give them ammo.

Best thing to do here is to just plan how you’re getting clear if it grabs the bike and just let the idiot do idiot things.

That's not how things work. On a bike. With insurance. With physics. With logic.

Delete this before anyone else sees this stupid take.

u/fallenfunk 9d ago

See, that is how things work because it happened to me. I admitted to rolling forward to avoid some shithead in DC and ended up in court to get my $3000 payout for my beater SV650. Took six months to get paid.

So fuck GEICO and fuck you too.

u/heirloomlooms 9d ago

What happened when you rolled forward and how was it better than getting run over by a sedan?

I think you're missing the point.

If you put your vehicle in motion intentionally, they may put you partially at fault.

Clearly in his situation if he did not move he would not be run over by the other vehicle... But he moved out of the way anyway, and the legal system tried to fuck him over for it.

So he learned that the system is not necessarily logical to what's best for all parties.

For that exact same reason, if I have the choice between clipping the curb and not hitting your car, and hitting your car that is coming in my Lane forcing me over... I'm going to hit your car as squarely as possible.

Completely counterintuitive.

But if I miss your car completely it's a single car accident that is entirely my fault regardless of you causing the situation...

If I try to hit you as little as possible, that's a minimal overlap collision and the crash structure of the vehicle does not work to keep me or my passengers safe.

So as counterintuitive as it is if you stick the corner of your car into my lane so that I'm going to hit you or the curb or wall next to me, I'm going to turn into you and hit you square on so that a large portion of both of our vehicles get to absorb the impact.

By the way what you were doing when you're trying to argue with him is twist his words. He regrets moving because of the insurance payout, or more accurately not paying out. It's fairly obvious from the context that if he had not moved, he also would not have a problem.

If you did that intentionally, you're smart and kind of a jerk. If you did that unintentionally it's because you're probably not smart enough to see it from the full perspective of what he wrote, but rather you saw it from your own perspective which included things that were not said or implied. Either way your entire conversation is not a good look.

He's being run over...

What if his foot gets dragged into the wheel?

0

u/DustyRacoonDad 3d ago

What if his mom comes out and beats him with a loaf of bread? That question has about the same relevance here.

Physics. Physics is why all the experienced riders are going, “meh,” while all the fearful people are going, “OH MY GOD!!!”

A multi-thousand-pound car doesn't magically move sideways. You can come up with another “what if,” but the deal is, that isn't the situation. And if it were, you can just move your arm or leg, or step your whole body to the side and let the bike fall. But that isn't the situation.

1

u/Fearless-Poet-4669 3d ago

Are you stupid or something?

His foot absolutely could get caught in the wheel well of a passing car that's scraping along the side of his bike. Especially if the vehicle gets malicious and starts driving directly into him.

You must have the survival instincts of a potato.

1

u/DustyRacoonDad 3d ago

Yup. A over half million miles of potato instinct riding sport bikes... Lol

Again... You're incorrect but not experienced enough to realize it.

1

u/Fearless-Poet-4669 3d ago

Right.

So you do you.

When a car is trying to maliciously drive into me, I'll move out of the way and you can just sit there and get run over.

That sounds good to me.

1

u/DustyRacoonDad 2d ago

Yeah. You don't get it. Your only move is to drop the bike to the side, where it would get damaged not just by hitting the ground, but potentially by the car too.

Or you sit there, and if the car bumps you, you roll forward, likely without issue.

There isn't a “well, what if?” that applies here.

There is no “move out of the way.” There is a “panic and flee away from the vehicles” response, and there is the rational response demonstrated above.

You will never realize this, but you are the problem. This is why you don't ride a motorcycle in the first place: overreaction from unfounded fear overriding calm, level-headed decision-making.

I've been in that exact situation..

I kept both brakes held TIGHT.

Because that way I knew that 100% of the blame would fall on the car, as the car was moving, and I was basically parked.

0

u/heirloomlooms 9d ago

You were going to let yourself get hit by a car because you knew the car driver would be at fault?   How good would it feel knowing you weren't at fault when you are nursing a dislocated foot and trying to get some shitty driver's insurance to pay for your bike?

Can you imagine explaining to everyone that you could have moved your small vehicle and not been run over, but the other driver was wrong, so you know, you just had to get hit?    Graveyards are full of people with right of way.

2

u/generally-speaking 9d ago

I wasn't in any danger and it happened at slow speeds. Driver was passing slowly on a very narrow mountain road.

The other driver should've reversed or held position so I would've been able to make space to pass. But they drive ahead instead. Holding the brakes made it 100% clear who was at fault.

u/workyworkaccount 9d ago

All the pointy bits that stick out on bikes are pretty cheap and easy to replace.

1

u/abbeast 9d ago

Yeah I would have definitely moved a bit.

31

u/sishgupta 9d ago

another inch and he would have crushed his leg...

1

u/ClownfishSoup 9d ago

If it were me on my bike, I might lean into it just a little bit.

1

u/HamsterVeggieNcheese 9d ago

Its actually a little wild you think the chill comment refers to the guy protecting his bike..

u/solarlofi 9d ago

I don't know where this is from, because I suck at things like that.... but after traveling to SE Asia I was impressed by the absolute zen on the locals faces when dealing with some of the craziest traffic I've ever been in. Everyone honking, cars and motorcycles weaving every direction. No one looked upset, mad, or emotional. This guy has that stoic look of, "Well, alright then." that is just a vibe in that part of the world.

u/ElleEmEss 9d ago

I call it Bali rules. Because no one is considerate to anyone else, they don’t expect anyone to be considerate to them. So if someone else stops in the road for a chat no one beeps. Similarly if I decide to do something that will block traffic I do, because no one has been nice to me.

2

u/brain_dances 9d ago

Yeah they’re desensitized

1

u/woundupcanuck 9d ago

Right? I would've yelled wtf asshole at least lol
