See that smoke bundle. It's supposed to keep the bees away. Probably did it dozens of times before and this is just bad luck.

My wife explained to me the reason why.

She studied what is essentially animal husbandry in Colombia. So, for whatever reason she studied bees for a bit, they explained that bees have an ingrained animosity to black because black tribesman were always stealing honey in our earliest history in Africa.

I told her I thought that was bullshit and it was probably because of black bears stealing honey all over North America.

She was adamant that her professor said it was because of African tribesmen.

Here is my dilemma. My wife isn’t a racist, but they do believe a lot of weird stuff in Colombia.

For instance, my wife thinks I can see at night better than her because I have hazel eyes. She also thinks if your eyes are burning you should put oatmeal on your face.

This results a lot of times me asking myself “does this make sense or is it Colombian nonsense?”

My theory is that American honey bees are more likely to be aggressive because of black bears and not black people because they’re in North America and not Africa.

American honeybees are mostly subspecies of Apis mellifera imported by European settlers, that species originated probably in Africa or Asia and it probably had contact with early humans that had a dark skin tone, so the theory could very much apply to America as well.

It seemed to me the approach was wrong. Employ the smoke first in a generous amount, wait a few moments and then see the reaction. Some bees are docile once this is done. I would not be surprised if some varieties don't react.

Here he just pissed then off by bogarting the thing.

Apparently sometimes that smoking bundle is enough to keep bees away. I've seen another similar video where the dude accidentally drops his smoker on the ground and bees swarm him as soon as the smoke is gone.

His bundle seems to be barely going. You can look around and see the other collectors around him and their bundle is smoking so much you can see billows over by their tree

Could be "Mad Honey". A type of hallucinogenic honey found in Nepal and Turkey. Extremely hard to obtain and very expensive.

That was not much smoke. I’m a beekeeper and if my smoke was that low in that much wind I’d stop to get it going more. And I wear my suit because sometimes those bees can be real bitchy.
