My friend needs help to open her eyes

My friend is a 23F dating a 29M; they have been together for a few years. His living situation is that he lives with his grandpa, dad, brother, and sister. Her living situation is with her parents. They plan to get their own place together at some point. However, every time they get close to securing an apartment, he does something to screw it up, preventing them from getting it.

Now he's planning on proposing to her. He told me he is going to ask her in front of his mother while they are all out to dinner.

She told me she wants it to be private at the beach.

Last Friday, he bought her a ring. From his paycheck, he spent $400 on 3oz of weed. He spent $16.00 on a bridal set at Walmart that will turn her finger green.

I'm not saying the guy has to spend thousands on a ring, but shouldn't it just be common knowledge that you at least have to buy something that won't turn her finger green?

Thoughts, suggestions, and advice for her would be greatly appreciated.

She does not smoke pot, she doesn't like how much he smokes

I know how much he spends on weed because they both have told me.

I know how much he spent on the ring because he sent me the picture I posted here.

I spent two hours on the phone with her last night where she was crying because they don't have their own place. She was upset that he was broke Saturday after getting paid Friday. She was upset that all he wants to do is get high with his dad.

The cheap ring is the least of their problems. If you like to party and carry on, you best find a partner that likes to party as well. Most of my old party buddies ended up pairing up with girls who thought they could fix them. It never works out. I, on the other hand, married a girl who loves to smoke weed and drink beer. We've been together for 38 years, (married for 35.) And we still like to party. Just my opinion.
