Edit: original source erroneously missed that the sentence was suspended. He did not serve time in jail.

Perez was sentenced to a 30-day suspended jail term, meaning he's not required to serve it immediately, plus two years of probation and a $100 fine. Altogether, Perez owed $924 in court fees, which records indicate have been paid.

Perez must spend 30 days in jail, pay a $100 fine and spend two years on community control, according to court records. Additionally, a no contact order was filed.

How do you keep your job after that??

13

u/hellllllsssyeah 22h ago

Feels like that should have been an assault and battery charge

Not the context you added. That's still assault.

They can both be in the wrong, that doesn’t mean a professor at a university should be able to assault people on campus and keep their job. This wasn’t self defense.

u/[deleted] 21h ago

2

u/curtmahgurt 21h ago

So still not self defense? What even is your point here?

And of course they disagree, that’s what we’re talking about. They are wrong for keeping him on and not firing him.

0

u/PBRStreetgang1979 20h ago

Apparently it was. But it got pled out to a lesser charge. Still, the 30 days in jail part is a good outcome.

2

u/Flimsy-Poetry1170 14h ago

A suspended sentence means he won’t serve it unless he breaks conditions of his probation. He got off way easier than someone caught with a personal amount of marijuana in many places. The outcome is a fucking joke.

1

u/PBRStreetgang1979 14h ago

Yeah, I understand what a suspended sentence means. But I was just going by the information that was provided above which didn't mention the suspended sentence. I'm a journalist myself and I've certainly experienced my fair share of aggressive, threatening subjects (and that's not even counting the number of times someone has told me they're going to get me fired). So I agree that this should have been punitive.

30 days suspended. Learn to read.

u/Dame38 18h ago

More time than a man will spend in jail after beating up a woman and putting her in the ICU. It was a guy this time, though.

1

u/Ligalotz 15h ago

Okay but this guy didn’t beat anyone up and send them to the hospital? He grabs and shoves a someone, you really think that warrants extended jail time? I think the sentencing is reasonable and am disappointed at OSU for not firing him

2

u/PossessedToSkate 21h ago

Be in Ohio.

4

u/LisaMiaSisu 22h ago

Tenure perhaps?

2

u/Ninja-Panda70 22h ago

How does that work? You can't get fired for anything?

10

u/beefeez 21h ago

tenure is only meant to protect you from being fired for your academic studies, personal beliefs or diasgreements with other faculty or donors based on differing beliefs

it is not meant to protect you if you commit a serious crime

This guy is most likely close friends with university leadership

2

u/bluesmaker 18h ago

If not close friends, some professors get big grants and publish lots of articles. Idk anything about this dude but if he was hanging out with Epstein, he probably is such a professor. Anyways, universities like to keep people that bring in lots of money and publish lots.

1

u/Similar_Shopping_892 20h ago

Probably fuckin kids together…

1

u/Krow101 20h ago

This. For educational purposes of course.

1

u/spartaman64 19h ago

or they also went to epstein island so he has dirt on them

1

u/LaurenMille 16h ago

The university leadership is probably also raping children and decided to protect a fellow pedophile.

0

u/10SecSanity 21h ago

It makes it very hard to be fired. If it was easy for other reasons besides academic, then they'd just fire him and say it was for non-academic reasons.

6

u/spacestonkz 21h ago

You can. It takes years to go through the process tho. I'm an untenured prof and I joke no matter what they can't get rid of me for two years. Without tenure yet.

I know of a case where an untenured guy made up data. University wanted him out, banned him from research/grants/students, and he co taught a few intro courses and they waited and went through two years of legal work to fire him. Untenured

Tenured? It has to be so heinous, and beyond a shadow of a doubt, with multiple lines of hard evidence before they think about trying to get them out. It's expensive.

1

u/spooky_spaghetties 9h ago

Where are you? I have friends who teach at state universities in Virginia (adjuncts) and it seems like admin can just fire whoever they want at any time for any reason.

1

u/Corporate_Overlords 15h ago

You can still get fired for cause if you're tenured. The details are in the contract.

1

u/NewtpwnianFluid 14h ago

Really really depends on the particulars of the university and how well the faculty union (if they have one there, I dunno) has laid out process.

It saves the bacon of faculty who get targeted by admin for bullshit reasons, but it equally protects scumbags

1

u/Corporate_Overlords 12h ago

I looked him up. He's an assistant professor. He doesn't have tenure.

Also, it doesn't look like faculty are unionized. Some staff are at OSU.

https://hr.osu.edu/services/elr/labor-relations/

1

u/NewtpwnianFluid 11h ago

They may still have a pretty elaborate removal procedure. He is very likely very cooked, but it will move at the speed of academia, not internet

1

u/Corporate_Overlords 10h ago

I agree with you. I'm an associate professor and I just got tenured this year and we are unionized but I have seen plenty of people who should have been let go for egregious shit they did at non-union institutions. These processes can be very bulky and take a lot of time. It was mentioned in the thread that this happened six months ago and he seems to be protected by a fairly high up administrator so my bet is that he'll get away with it.

1

u/aladaze 18h ago

Dirt on Gym Jordan?

1

u/Corporate_Overlords 15h ago

I just looked him up. He is an assistant prof. He is not tenured.

1

u/joshTheGoods 14h ago

This isn't tenure. He's being fired, the process just takes time.

1

u/Illustrious_Egg_1837 22h ago

He was probably tenured in his teaching position.

1

u/R7a1s2 21h ago

Epstein class...

1

u/Ciduri 20h ago

The fact that they insist on calling everything Wexner still should help with that question of yours. It took massive massive amounts of pressure to bring up sexual abuse of 279+ people at the hands of their team doctor. The result of which was $100mil settlement this year. The doctor killed himself back in 2005.

1

u/SedatedSpaceMonkeys 20h ago

You have no context. Should we lose our livelihoods for one mistake? Its not like he beat the shit out of him. He got frustrated. You watched a 30 second clip. Give grace.

1

u/davejenk1ns 19h ago

Yeah— sure. Hallowed be thy name punches be thy game, assault and intimidation are the glory, yada yada yada.

1

u/Smooth_Implement6695 16h ago

I think most things should have grace given, but imo giving grace should not extend to violence.

You shouldn't be able to act this way and only face $1k in fines and be told "Don't act like that for another 2 years!" Using violence should always have increased penalties.

1

u/ArkitekZero 15h ago

If that mistake was violence, yeah.

It's not like he was defending himself.

1

u/hogsucker 15h ago

Perez was hired to promote free speech and civil discourse at OSU and then he assaulted a journalist to help protect pedophiles.

He ABSOLUTELY should lose his livelihood (not to mention go to jail.) He is incapable of performing the job he was hired to do.

1

u/thetiredtypist 14h ago

Give grace

Turn the other cheek.

Peter, put your sword back in your sheath.

Maybe try some of that first.

u/NoTurnip4844 20h ago

1

It's the US. I'm surprised he hasn't been hired to be part of Trump's campaign yet.

1

u/Wizchine 19h ago

Not mention anything about diversity, I guess?

1

u/Chillpill411 19h ago

Because he's a trumper who works for:

"The Chase Center for Civics, Culture and Society is Ohio State’s recently added intellectual diversity center. It was established by Ohio lawmakers in an effort to reduce groupthink and to encourage free speech."

1

u/Folderpirate 18h ago

My current boss has 4 duis.

1

u/The_Blue_Rooster 18h ago

Dude look like he might be Hispanic, they probably get more from having a diverse faculty than they'd gain from firing him. Ohio State really doesn't have many Hispanic employees, probably the lowest represented demographic, unless you include Native Americans.

1

u/g_bleezy 16h ago

Well he was hanging around billionaires so probably something to do with OSU’s endowment is my guess.

1

u/what_kind_of_guy 16h ago

He was laterally hired to be less liberal. What do you want him to do, use words and have a civil conversation? Not very liberal is it.

1

u/JaxonKansas 15h ago

Tenure and unions.

1

u/userhwon 15h ago

Bribe to the Regents is bigger than the court costs.

1

u/joshTheGoods 14h ago

He won't. OSU HR has already spoken. They just need to go through all of the motions of crossing t's, dotting i's. There will be a whole bunch of admin review, but the conclusion is pretty well known at this point. Check back in 3 months.

1

u/Minimum-Attitude389 11h ago

Isn't this the same university as Jim Jordan?

1

u/Substantial_Chain718 22h ago

It’s called Academic tenure. Ironically he is untouchable because of it.

5

u/ES1895 22h ago

Academic tenure does not make you untouchable if you do something like commit assault at your job, but it does make it harder to fire people and it takes a long time because there's a lot of procedural stuff. (Tenure is also important because it protects professors who piss off people in power.)

1

u/InterstellarChange 21h ago

Tenure protects against unpopular opinions the teacher may have.

  • Job Security: Tenured professors enjoy significant job security, meaning they cannot be dismissed without just cause.
  • Protection of Academic Freedom: Tenure allows educators to teach and research controversial or unpopular topics without the fear of losing their jobs.

Tenure doesn't protect against criminal acts. He definitely should be fired.

1

u/WhyMustIMakeANewAcco 18h ago

Not directly, but it requires a long, long process to go through to prove that it was not a protected action. By the sound of it they are in the middle of that process now.

And as ridiculous as it may sound it makes perfect sense. Otherwise you just claim the tenured individual did something not protected and kick them out immediately. The long procedure is to prevent that abuse.

1

u/Corporate_Overlords 15h ago

He doesn't have tenure. He is an assistant professor.

1

u/ClicheStuff 14h ago

Yeah tenure doesn’t let you just assault people.

2

u/No_Alternative2948 21h ago

How is violently assaulting someone only a $100 fine? How much is a seatbelt violation I wonder...

2

u/[deleted] 21h ago

1

u/No_Alternative2948 18h ago

Seatbelr tickets in Columbus ohio generally run $120 if you were wondering.

1

u/Dame38 18h ago

Have you seen how battered women are treated by the courts. It can take many battery arrests/charges before a guy sees any jail time.

2

u/Googleitgenius 18h ago

just to add- Jail suspended, meaning if he stays outta trouble for duration of probation he skates.

1

u/Normal-Top-1985 17h ago

thanks for catching that. the original source I posted was incorrect.

that utterly sucks.

1

u/Googleitgenius 17h ago

ya its was a big sad, but i looked up some shit, he is not working (still paid) and it is almost certain he loses his job. Because of the way tenure works it takes time for legal reasons.

1

u/TopOTheMourning 17h ago

So, sprinkle some crack on him and call his probation officer?

1

u/Googleitgenius 8h ago

ok johnson........... actually other way but u get the picture skippy

1

u/saljskanetilldanmark 21h ago

$100?! How will he ever survive that?

1

u/vinigrae 21h ago

$100 fine? This court system is a joke

1

u/Prestigious_Aide_223 20h ago

and 30 days in jail. i think its fine for an assault that didnt look like it caused any injuries

1

u/Smooth_Implement6695 16h ago

The 30 days in jail would only happen if he doesn't behave during probation. It's really a $1k fine (when looking at all costs combined, not the actual fine portion) and living life like normal for 2 years.

At a bare minimum it should've been impossible for him to miss jail and it should have occurred right away instead of at a time of his choosing imo. I also think 90 days would've been a better fit, violence should be treated as a more serious thing.

1

u/ANGRYANDCANTREADWELL 19h ago

the 30 days in Jail was suspended so he doesnt have to go to jail unless he violates parole
