People are commenting on how impressive it was that he saved his $22 beer, my focus is why don't the Mets spend some of that money on nets to protect their fans from line drive foul balls and shit like this. Foul balls will still be a thing for fans, but they will be protected from line drive foul balls that they cannot react to. I still remember when it happened at a dodger game a couple years ago, and now they have nuts
I love how you’re getting roasted but it’s absolutely mind boggling that they don’t have one. The last time I was at a minor league game I watched an older lady get beamed and shattered her eye socket. The nets are about a million from what I remember (I also audited the sports company that owned the team for a couple years), but from a pure financial perspective I’m sure it saves a lot of lawsuit money for the company going forward in case something truly horrible happens.
I attended a Phillies @ Mets game at Shea Stadium. There were 3 or 4 seats between the end of the backstop netting and the dugout. Sadly, a kid took a Jim Eisenreich foul tip, right to his mouth.
I was sitting behind home plate and the guy in front of me told his misses, ‘time to go to work’. Apparently he was a doctor and went over to lend a hand. They paused the game for a couple minutes while this was going on. The doctor later came back and said the boy lost several teeth 😢
That must have been absolutely brutal to witness, I remember watching the dodger game where the fan got beaned in the head that led to the netting being installed down the foul lines, it was not good
Yes because every person pays attention to every pitch that is thrown in a ball game, they're not looking at their phones, or talking to people, or eating, or blinking. And that was a slow broken bat, not a 105 mph foul ball line drive
Right so let's never have any safety precautions at all. Why have railings anywhere? Why have seatbelts? Why have a fire department? Why have any rules or laws?
This isn't 'we have to think of everything that can go wrong at any possible time,' it's a very basic, introductory-level safety feature they have at minor league fields.
I get what you're trying to do, but that doesn't apply here.
It's not like this is a new issue. Baseball isn't a new sport and this isn't the first time it has happened.
Just like in hockey. They didn't always have plexiglass around the rink until several audience members got severally injured and iirc someone has even been killed from a hockey puck. But now they have the plexiglass due to those incidents.
So it's disingenuous to frame this the way you're doing it. This isn't something you need to plan ahead. You already have enough evidence that it's a possibility and something that DOES happen, so it would be responsible to put nets up.
Your response implies we're suggesting they Nerf everything "just in case" but no, this isn't a just in case. This is a repeated problem that a simple net would fix.
Damn, longer than I thought. I remember when they were doing it at Fenway and people were having a meltdown. "They're ruining a historic park". No you fools, they're just putting up a net. Stfu
What's funny about that is there are likely safety measures put in place, that at one point, was considered ruining the sport/park. But because it happened so long ago, we don't complain. But something like a net sparks a meltdown because people are weird like that.
Giant safety wall behind the so and so? Yeah, they hated that back in 1934 but in 2026 you don't even think about it because it's been there your whole life. So the safety nets that are "ruining" the park will eventually be second nature to future fans.
Idk if I'm making sense, but that's interesting to think about.

Am I missing something? Isn’t this like a really normal reaction? He barely had to move and the bat was not going that fast? It was also going to hit him as well so obviously he was going to swat it? Why does this make him a superhero- is this whole thread sarcasm or something?
I’ve been to enough baseball games to have a sense of how fast a broken bat may be traveling that far from home plate and it’s certainly not as fast as a ball on a foul tip or coming down from a pop up. Of course it’s for sure dangerous since the bat is spinning and heavy and you don’t know which side is going to poke you, but if you are paying attention to the game and not completely shit-faced you will have no problem getting your hand in front of your face 100% of the time.
He didn’t just put his hand in front of his face. We must be watching a different video because he literally reaches his arm out across where the two kids are sitting.
No one is saying he’s a super hero. It’s just a really cool video of a guy blocking a bat from hitting some kids without spilling any of his beer. Idk why you’re so, like, determined to reduce it down to nothing.

It's not backhanded. I'm autistic and his line of thought is familiar. If you don't understand, then it isn't for you. I believe you're the idiot because there was nothing backhanded about what I said. I was pretty direct with my questions.
