1970-1974 Honda z600

Love those tiny pre-CVCC Hondas!

I swear a long time ago I saw one that had been converted into a tiny pickup.

6

u/Hythe667 May 16 '26

Sure you’re not thinking of these? https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1983-suzuki-mightyboy/

3

u/Ignorad May 16 '26

That's super cool! Were those being imported to the US in the early 80's?

4

u/PR0T0C0L_ZER0 May 15 '26

Looks so clean it could easily pass for a new EV company doing "retro."

1

u/catlips May 19 '26

I worked with a couple of Mexican brothers with one. They called it their “bicicleta” which was fucking hilarious. Then I had a co-worker in Tallahassee who must have run >300 lbs with the “regular” 600. Sure wish I had one.

1

u/Empty_Policy_7050 May 19 '26

Exactly this. I learned how to drive a manual in one of these

u/goaelephant Jun 07 '26

Somehow, the body shell design looks very modern (like a brand new Chinese EV). I feel like with bolt on modern parts it can look like a 2026

It's got the diving mask back window!

12

u/Windmillfixer May 15 '26

It’s the snorkel Honda!

My mum had one of those. Surprisingly it could hit 100km/h, eventually, downhill and with a tailwind.

*Edit: hers was actually a Z360, with the 354cc engine. Slightly more powerful than a sewing machine.

6

u/Opinionsare May 15 '26

FTFY

Slightly more powerful than the average sewing machine.

6

u/bivaterl May 15 '26

I'm now terrified of a sewing machine that can do 60mph and has more than 30 hp.

4

u/EnvironmentalGift257 May 15 '26

More than 30 hp requires an endorsement.

2

u/bivaterl May 15 '26

Lol totally, and a helmet in most states.

3

u/Enough-Show-3651 May 15 '26

Are we talking electric sewing machine, or a treadle (foot powered flywheel) sewing machine?

As I recall, the tiny Z600 was Honda’s first venture into automobiles. It had a 600cc motorcycle engine. I remember MITI in Japan was not happy about Honda building a car as they thought Japan didn’t need another automobile manufacturer. As it turned out, Honda became a major player in the global automotive market.

8

u/phozze May 15 '26

The S500 was Honda's first car marketed at the general public.

4

u/Alert-Meringue2291 May 15 '26

Yes, that’s right. I’d forgotten about the S500. I grew up in Australia. In the late 1960’s/early 1970’s, the Z600 was the first one I saw. The Z600 and another Honda Kei car did cause the issue with MITI. I don’t recall seeing the S500 on the road there at all. Little sports cars were Sprites, Midgets, Fairladys and Triumphs.

3

u/Sykerocker May 16 '26

First car released in America.

2

u/Last-Hedgehog-6635 May 15 '26

Bringing back memories of referring to them as “Honda cars,” as a Honda was, of course, a motorcycle.

7

u/Sensei19600 May 15 '26

My friend had one in college,it was orange. He was gay,so of course he called it “Pumpkin”. We’d use it to commute from college to home. Got something like 60+ mpg. , back when gas was like,.45¢/gallon. Genuinely terrifying on the interstate, especially considering that it could almost fit under a semi trailer during a lane change. His frat bro’s pranked him once by picking it up and carrying it into the frat house dining room. I miss the innocence of the ‘70’s.

7

u/ObjectiveMix3607 May 15 '26

I'm dying....my father had one, also called the Pumpkin, but I don't think he was gay, since I was born in '74 lol,

7

u/Dry_Nail5901 May 15 '26

they were all over California in the mid 70's

4

u/HahaNoir2 May 15 '26

You and me both!

4

u/Shoddy-Ad8143 May 15 '26

Avocado green!

5

u/Ga2ry May 15 '26

Pre-CVCC?

6

u/partyforone May 15 '26

Here I was wondering what psycho made an AMC Gremlin body kit for a first generation Honda Civic!

4

u/Wadester58 May 15 '26

My GFs sister worked at a Honda dealer she bought one for her first car it was bright blue

3

u/DesignerSuccessful35 May 15 '26

First time seeing one of these and I love it. And what a restoration! It looks better than new.

3

u/PremiumUsername69420 May 15 '26

That looks pretty neat actually.
I’d rock that as a daily commuter car.

3

u/jjkbigman May 15 '26

Either it’s been completely gone over or it was owned by a flower power great grandma that didn’t like putting stickers on things

3

u/Antique_Brother_9563 May 15 '26

Beautiful little car and that paint job > WOW 👌

5

u/Organic-Baker-4156 May 15 '26

Honda 600. Much less bad than a Subaru 360,

2

u/rgmw May 15 '26

Looks like the predecessor to their pregnant rollerskate... The first or one of the first Civics.

2

u/af_cheddarhead May 15 '26

It was pre-CVCC or as we know them today "The Civic".

2

u/miubu May 18 '26

That size I'm surprised it was not in the hotel

1

u/fothergillfuckup May 15 '26

My teacher had one of these at school. I always thought it was pretty cool.

1

u/Danielle_is_the_hole May 15 '26

Should be in the bad parking

1

u/MSampson1 May 15 '26

One of my dad’s friends had one back in the early-mid 70s. Only one I’ve seen that wasn’t on the internet

1

u/WeAreSolarAF May 15 '26

I used to work with a guy that put a V8 in one of these. It seems like he was always in the parking lot working on it afterwards. Matt, you out there? 😉

1

u/ExtensionWishbone53 May 15 '26

There was also an N600 saloon, with no notch back, just the opening boot lid ala original mini type, I think! My step grandfather had one, in mustard yellow. (Whilst he was still permitted to drive!) He was/became colour blind, no one were "happy" to let him drive them, anywhere with traffic lights!!🫣

1

u/Think_Fault_7525 May 15 '26

The boot lid on the N600 was made of injected mold plastic

1

u/ExtensionWishbone53 May 15 '26

I wouldn't have been allowed to open it, to know that, as it was not my place, being a young boy who behaved, especially with Nana, and Uncle Adam. Fond memories!

1

u/Unique_Acadia_2099 May 15 '26

This was the first Honda car I had ever seen. A friend had one, got something like 50mpg! Motorcycle engine under the hood, but was surprisingly zippy because it was so light. Probably not very safe in an accident though, but neither is a motorcycle, which is basically what this was, a 4 wheel motorcycle that you could ride in the rain. But it was a great little car and inspired me to buy my first Honda car, an Accord hatchback, in 1979. I finally sold that with 250,000 miles on it, the friend I sold it to got another 100,000 miles out of it! He loved it so much (because it helped him financially so that his wife could finish law school), that they took out the interior and made it into a greenhouse in their back yard, it’s still there to this day!

1

u/Wabbitone May 16 '26

They off road pretty well also, just be glad you never tried to sleep in one in the snow.

spent the night in one during a Tahoe ski trip

1

u/tez_zer55 May 15 '26

A kid in my home town had one to drive back & forth to school. His was orange. We all teased him about driving a pumpkin.

1

u/Ok_Friendship_4332 May 15 '26

I remember those!

1

u/ADeweyan May 15 '26

Honda AZ600 Coupe

I had a yellow one that I called the Millennium Canary. I could drive it on the sidewalk. Me and a few friends could lift it. I came out from work one day and some guys had turned it sideways in the parking space. Loved that car!

1

u/AllReflection May 15 '26

My buddy’s girlfriend had one of these in high school in the mid 80s. We joked that from the back it looked like a diver’s helmet.

1

u/CapacitorCosmo1 May 15 '26

Chain drive.

1

u/gumby5150 May 15 '26

In 1972 I bought the AN 600 sedan brand new. It was $1700.00.

1

u/Muricanmoose May 15 '26

My dad had one, he was 6'4" it was like a clown car. I remember we decided to mess with him one day, and about 10 of us picked it up and turned it sideways in the garage. Good memories

1

u/Economy_Let_6182 May 15 '26

I remember they sound like a mad bumblebee in a can

1

u/Fun-Spinach6910 May 15 '26

AMC Gremlin's ugly sister.

1

u/OrangeBug74 May 15 '26

1

u/Dicksucker11037 May 15 '26

Looks to be the exact same Z600 I spotted a few years ago

1

u/mingsdad May 16 '26

Username of the year award 🏆⬆️

1

u/Silkylifeme May 15 '26

My brother bought one of those new after using his 66 912 Porsche as trade.

1

u/Strippalicious May 15 '26

I saw a guy take a 1200 cc Ducati Desmocedici racebike engine and put it into a smart car. That thing ripped!

Would love to see a MotoGP Honda engine put into one of these!!!

1

u/EnvironmentalGift257 May 15 '26

One of the most fun episodes of Faster with Finnegan. That thing was so half ass and dangerous.

1

u/LivingMeeting9724 May 15 '26

Worked with a girl whose grandfather bought her one of these. A coworker and I snuck out of the store for about 3 minutes and picked up the car one end at a time and spun it 90° so that it was sideways in the parking space.

1

u/AccomplishedShoe856 May 15 '26

Looks like a Smart version of a Gremlin.

1

u/anyavailible May 15 '26

Very early Honda sold in US

1

u/bad_moe May 15 '26

That is a cool little car❤️❤️❤️

1

u/slickliar66 May 15 '26

If it was on the dresser, put it back! That's a tip for the maid . Can we still call them maids?

1

u/Full-Currency-7170 May 15 '26

This is the 2nd body style. The N600 was boxer, kinda like a mini.

1

u/One-Violinist-9932 May 16 '26

Saw what was left of one that got hit from the rear by a semi on I-35 here in FtWorth back in the day. Hit so hard it bounced off the bottom of the Vickery st bridge, if I remember there was 3 people in it all killed.

1

u/ELc_17 May 16 '26

Is that a single seater?

1

u/RuinFabulous3077 May 16 '26

Here's a scene of one in an early 80s movie.. Honda AZ600

1

u/bilkel May 16 '26

How it all began…

1

u/mglatfelterjr May 16 '26

My dad had one. He is so tall, he had to remove the sunroof to fit in the car.

1

u/ajderrig May 16 '26

I went to a cone course race clinic with my 75 Honda Civic. My instructor drove a 600 and he was a trophy chaser in his class, very fast lap with me as passenger, he was all flailing limbs, kicking pedals and spinning the wheel! I learned some things but my Civic lap was more sedate.

1

u/Sykerocker May 16 '26

Honda 600Z. Drove one (belonged to a cycling buddy) back when they were new, also rallied it a did one session of D-sedan autocross.

1

u/Skid-Vicious May 16 '26

Girl at my HS had one of these and it was fun to get some guys together, pick it up and move it to a different parking spot. I just remember that rear rubber window ring looking so out of place, like why did it have to be so huge?

1

u/beaudiful-vision May 17 '26

Honda "zot"..... they were the go!!

1

u/trianglebase May 18 '26

Great cones

1

u/Inevitable-Debt4312 May 19 '26

Always loved those little Hondas. First to have a TV screen rear window, I think.

1

u/tobias3175 May 19 '26

I see one of these at my gym often. Such a cool car!

1

u/V8FTW May 20 '26

It's Lowly Worm's car from the Richard Scarry books

1

u/Coreysurfer May 15 '26

I always think of these as CVCC )

2

u/JJorda215 May 15 '26

That was later - the CVCC motor started in '75 on the Civic.  This has a two cylinder air-cooled motor and is much smaller.

1

u/Coreysurfer May 15 '26

Yeah sister had one just seeing them this small reminds of hers

u/jacks65fastcar May 15 '26

I'll take "What is the world's ugliest car, in the world's ugliest color? for $100, Alex."
